I don't live in the UK, but I would like to know what you think of the following names. If you could rate them and maybe tell me, what you think of them class wise (not that it matters a lot, but I would be sad to call my child something that is very chavvy or just lower-class):

  • Indie
  • Minnie
  • Vida
  • Emmy
  • Billie

THANKS! Smile

Agree exactly with MsChatterbox ranking

Mollymaejonrs · 07/04/2020 14:22

Vida is fab

MsChatterbox · 07/04/2020 14:21

Highest class to lowest:

Vida
Indie
Emmy
Billy
Minnie

Some people in the UK nickname the vagina as Minnie so I wouldn't choose that personally.

  • Indie - Love! Not downmarket - joint fav.
  • Minnie - stripper name. Yes slag for Vag. Awful
  • Vida - ok. Don’t love
  • Emmy - Love! Not downmarket. It’s gorgeous- favouite
  • Billie - Love! Not downmarket- joint favourite

They’re all nicknames/short forms, except Vida, so automatically they’re not very classic. If you used their longer forms, it would be better. I’d stay clear of India, though.

ilovepuggies · 07/04/2020 14:04

Hello

Would you consider India instead of indie?
Also I’m in agreement with another poster Emma is such a beautiful classic name and plus is the name of one of my best friends and she is beautiful and smart.

Having said all this choosing a name is very personal so whatever you choose will be the right thing for you.

Congratulations

I actually just want to name her, what we are going to call her. I know that is not a very popular opinion here on MN, and I totally get where you are coming from. But I really don't like nicknames.

Indie and Vida.

MikeUniformMike · 07/04/2020 13:50

None of them are awful, but they're not particularly aspirational. They seem nicknames.

Billie and Indie are quite cute. Short for Belinda and India perhaps?

Windyatthebeach · 07/04/2020 13:42

I know girls called Indie and Billie.
Be aware a Minnie can be used as a nn for vagina...
Blush.
Just saying..

AJTracey · 07/04/2020 13:42

I love Vida

Toilenstripes · 07/04/2020 13:42

Billie makes me think of Billie Lourd, daughter of Carrie Fisher
Minnie, no way
Vida, old fashioned, could be posh but not an attractive sound
Indie, very 90s American

I’m not crazy about any of them, but can see Billie being cute for a girl. I really don’t know if there are class associations with any of them as they’re not standard British names.

Cucumbersalad · 07/04/2020 13:41

Emmy is my favourite, then Indie. Sorry , I'm not a fan of the others.

I would go for Emma with Emmy as diminutive or else India with nn Indie. Emma is a beautiful name.

Floralnomad · 07/04/2020 13:40

To me Vida is the only one that doesn’t look like a nickname , and of the others don’t go for Minnie , Indie , Emmy and Billie would be fine for everyday use but I’d give them a more formal name that they can use when they grow up if they want to . As for whether they are chavvy is way too subjective .
