Thoughts on this name guys? It is Cornish for James Star

Jago is one of my favourite names, along with Jacob. Would have chosen it for DS but ex-H didn't agree. Wish I had put it on the birth certificate anyway, it's not like he'd have noticed, lol.

Staffori · 04/04/2020 00:36

I think it's cool. I do know a Jago aged about 25 and not from Cornwall but he chose the name for himself. His real name is Joe.

Astronica · 04/04/2020 00:22

I've loved Jago for ages and have been surprised it hasn't caught on more, given the popularity of o ending names. Great name!

OatMilkAddict · 03/04/2020 21:51

Lovely name.

Ihaveamind · 03/04/2020 21:46

I really like it, it's more labourer than landowner to me though.

Antonin · 03/04/2020 21:40

I absolutely love Jago. Would use it in a flash if I had a boy.

IWantT0BreakFree · 03/04/2020 11:26

I have always loved Jago and it's on my shortlist for a boy. To my ears it doesn't sound pretentious or posh at all. I can see why some think it does (it sounds similar to Hugo) but to me it's a solid, salt-of-the-earth type name (like Jack) but with the benefit of being a bit more unusual and less commonly heard.

MikeUniformMike · 03/04/2020 11:16

You forgot Arlo

Flymetothestars · 03/04/2020 11:07

I like it

I also like Otto Milo and Hugo

Redfox · 03/04/2020 10:34

@catlifeisthelifeforme no funnily enough we don't call him Jay and I don't think his mates do either, I sometimes call him Jags which sounds a bit posho.

It was his Dad who really liked the name and I liked it but was not sure - we considered loads of names but I am glad we went with it. The name does seem to divide people but it does not matter if you like it.

My Jago is now up looking bemused. What a time to be 18.
Good luck. Boys are great.

chorusline79 · 03/04/2020 09:57

I absolutely love it. I wanted to call my DS Jago but his dad didn't like it, plus we are not Cornish, we were living in SE London! But I just think it's an awesome name and I loved the way it sounded with our surname too.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 03/04/2020 09:48

Ooh theres one in my family tree! Got a pic of him from 1881 and he's the spitting image of my dad. He was from Wiltshire so interested to hear of the cornish/welsh roots.

homeschoolchaos · 03/04/2020 09:45

@struggling - I agree! Grew up in Cornwall and the people I know who have used Jago are not posh. But I suspect outside of Cornwall it would be quite posh

Strugglingtodomybest · 03/04/2020 09:40

I live in Cornwall, and I wouldn't describe it as posh. To me, it's in the same category as Jayden.

catlifeisthelifeforme · 03/04/2020 09:29

@redfox Happy birthday to Jago! I'm not fortunate to have a posh accent but I have a rather posh job (if there's such a thing!) Wink Does he get called Jay much? Great to speak to someone who's used it and still loves it now!

catlifeisthelifeforme · 03/04/2020 09:27

@MikeUniformMike Iago is definitely pronounced yah-go in Wales. But Jago would be Jay-go Smile

Redfox · 03/04/2020 09:08

Goes without saying that we are posh... Wink

MikeUniformMike · 03/04/2020 09:07

The presenter says that Iago (welsh for James and Jacob) is pronounce Yah-go. That's not correct. It is pronounced YAG-go' (Yag- to rhyme with wag, the go bit is like the go in got but without the t).

Redfox · 03/04/2020 09:02

My gorgeous Jago is 18 today. Obvs he is still in bed asleep! I still love his name and it’s Cornish Celtic, pronounced as it sounds Jay-go. It’s no more pretentious than someone using an Irish name and they are not Irish as someone else pointed out earlier. If you love it op, use it. Others names like Jacob/ Josh are just too ubiquitous

BuffaloCauliflower · 03/04/2020 09:02

@catlifeisthelifeforme same. I don’t think I have a single not ‘posh’ name on our list. Luckily we’re in Surrey and very well spoken 😉

catlifeisthelifeforme · 03/04/2020 08:53

Oh I would much rather a posh "pretentious" name than a chavvy sounding one Grin I think Jago gives me the first before the latter, similar to Hugo (which for me has become too popular to use)

CheriLittlebottom · 03/04/2020 08:48

Taught a Jago once, in a rather posh boarding school. Quite liked the name but I think you do need to be a bit posh to carry it off! Never would have occurred to me not to pronounce the J.

I had no idea it was a Cornish name, this family weren't Cornish as far as I'm aware, and I agree with you OP, there are lots of names which have moved out of their 'original' languages. My name is French; there's not a French bone in my body. I'm London/ south east and if you go back far enough my family is Scottish!

Mrstwiddle · 03/04/2020 08:47

Never head it before, I feel like it could either be very pretentious or very chavvy, there’s much nicer names out there, also reminds me of the offensive word “dago”

BuffaloCauliflower · 03/04/2020 08:42

Go for it OP, it’s a great name

catlifeisthelifeforme · 03/04/2020 08:42

The feedback regarding pronunciation is helpful, though!
