I know its a stand alone name but I quite like both. I'd like him to be Jackson but the option to nn jack. But is this considered silly?

Jack is a diminutive of John which makes far less sense even if well established in historical record than being a nickname for Jackson.

Just be careful with your surname, if it's not convincingly "surname" then your child could have a life of confusion from people not knowing what their name/surname is, e.g. Jackson Thomas
