You will be reeling from the comments which must be awful, but that is the both the benefit and the downside of asking on an anonymous forum like this.
If you told me I’m in real life you were thinking of Skyla-Blair and asked what I thought, I’d say it was different and lovely I’m afraid! If you were a good friend and I realised you were going to spell Skylar without the “r” I’d say you might want to think about irritation of having to correct people over a lifetime, but I wouldn’t be as blunt as on here.

This is even more extreme when it comes to names because people reason correctly that it’s no biggy that they think the name’s crap, it’s not their child and it’s hardly life and death. If you asked if I liked your abusive boyfriend and what I though if him, in real life I’d express my concerns because there is something significant at stake. However I wouldn’t risk offending you over a child’s name.

The couple of 9 years old I know who got lumbered with a hyphen nearer the start of the fashion, only go by their first name now. Their parents never mention the “-Mae” they were so keen on a decade ago.

Drop the hyphen. It’s naff and a minor pain for her and you when filling out forms etc.
You only hyphenate if you want and expect people to use both names.

You can use just Skyla with Skyla-Blair if you want - there's no legislation which says you can't.

However, if you're going to call her Skyla day to day you may as well drop the hyphen and call her Skyla Blair which looks much nicer.

I would also spell Skyla as Skylar or Skyler.

All the adults with hyphenated first names I know go by the first of the two names only.

I don’t understand why you want a hyphen when you are only planning to use the first part of the name? Surely the point of hyphens is to indicate that the whole name is to be used?

A lot of public services are shit at computer programming. I'm not saying it's right, it's just something that would put me off as would an unusual spelling. You just get more mistakes and hassle.

I rarely come across any problems with mine and, TBH, it makes no sense as to why to should cause a problem other than shit/lazy programming. Hyphens were around long before computers.

I've worked with loads of computer systems that don't like hyphens which would put me off. I've also found that when service users have middle names or double barreled surnames that sound like they could be either first names or surnames you get loads of admin errors.

For example we had a patient who I will rename Ronald George-Jones and we had a difficult time locating his notes and all his medical info because on some systems he had been entered as GEORGE-JONES, Ronald and others JONES, Ronald George.

Needs to be Skylar no hyphen.
Blair is a popular name in Scotland for both boys & girls and it’s lovely.

Don't use the hyphen if you don't intend using the Blair. Otherwise she will have to explain herself to hundreds of teachers.

Skyler/Skylar is ok by itself. Blair is an odd one because it's a surname and also sounds a bit like a noise.

If you have to have both then no hyphen definitely better.
But this name is so so so chavtastic that I think it's reasonable other posters mentioned it (not just snobbery). A name as chavvy as that could be really detrimental to them later.

People can be a bit brutal on these threads, OP. Personally I quite like Skylar, but prefer without the hyphen. I'm never sure if hyphenated names mean you should address that person by their full name all the time. If she's likely to go by Skylar on a day to day basis it might make more sense to ditch the hyphen.

I’m really not a fan of hyphenated names and if you’re not even going to use the second part regularly it just seems pointless and trying too hard to be unique (especially when it’s not a common combination like Sarah-Jane or nowadays things like Ellie-May)

I agree Skyla seems unfinished, it’s not my taste but all the girls I’ve known with this name are Skylar which seems more complete
