Rosemary - dated or refreshing?!

Tattyjet · 10/03/2020 22:10

I like it as long as I think of the herb and not of somebody in their 60s! What do you think?

Other options are:
Naomi
Fern
Flora
Freya
Elizabeth
Miranda
Rose
Isolde
Iris
Thanks!

@familyofaliens "being popular with" doesn't exclude other groups. OTOH I know plenty of colourful homespun vegan scientists.

FamilyOfAliens · 11/03/2020 22:35

Rosemary has always been popular with the sort of vegan hippies who wear colourful homespun while tending their allotments and trying to swap yoga lessons for local currency tokens.

Yes, always. No other kind of person ever names their child Rosemary. How I, with my PhD in a STEM subject ever tricked my way into the Rosemary club is a complete mystery.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 11/03/2020 20:50

I have a real soft spot for the Edison Lighthouse song, despite its cheesiness. To me, Rosemary is a pretty name that's not too popular and has lots of nickname potential. Fwiw, I always think of a willowy hippyish type rather than an older woman, if you're bothered by that kind of association.

PondLover · 11/03/2020 20:03

I think that’s the issue, @Gasp0de, it’s not from long enough ago to have come back into fashion yet. The people I can think of called Rosemary are in their 60s.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/03/2020 19:37

Makes me feel very old to hear it described as an old lady name! I don't have any in my family but I was at school with a Rosemary and it's a name I've always liked. FWIW, my Rosemary and I will be 59 this year. Shock Not that old, surely?

I like all the Rose-/Ros- names. Rosalind, Roseanne, Roseanna, Rosanne, Rosanna, Rose, Rosa, Rosie, Roslyn, Roslin, Rosamond, Rosamund, Rosemary. I'm a little less keen on Rosalinda and Rose-Marie.

Wolfgirrl · 11/03/2020 19:35

We have really similar tastes! I wanted to use several on your list, but got overruled (still love my daughter's name though and no regrets!).

I think Rosemary is gorgeous and underused, and can be shortened to Rose, Rosie, Mary or Ro - all inoffensive and lovely. Go for it Smile

Thefaceofboe · 11/03/2020 19:29

Rosemary is on my list Smile love it

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 11/03/2020 18:28

Rosemary is lovely, though my favourite from your list is Miranda.

Bezalelle · 11/03/2020 17:00

Rosemary just sounds so fusty and musty! Rose on its own is lovely.

Tartyflette · 11/03/2020 16:55

And what's wrong with plant names?
Granted, some of them might be a bit much at the moment (Daphne, Myrtle) but their time will come!
Loads of Ivys, Hebes around atm.....

Tartyflette · 11/03/2020 16:46

It's a lovely, classic name.
(I think of the Edison Lighthouse song too!)

BlueMoon1103 · 11/03/2020 16:42

I love it!

steppemum · 11/03/2020 12:38

My friend's little girl is Rosemary, I thought it was a lovely underused pretty name, it is also lovely on a baby, but classy as an adult.

She is Rosie at the moment, but the whole name is pretty

I love Naomi, again a much under used name

strawberrylipgloss · 11/03/2020 12:26

I like Rose but Rosemary makes me think of a jolly 60 year old (very dated)

The rest of your list is great though.

PenelopeFlintstone · 11/03/2020 11:13

Do you like the smell of the plant? I don’t and it puts me off a bit. Not that that’s a good reason, of course.
I like the rest of your list though, but not Elizabeth as much as the others.

DoctorBambino · 11/03/2020 11:07

Not keen on Rosemary, more so because it makes me think of herbs than someone in their 60s!
Naomi - I like it
Fern - nope
Flora - yes but children will for sure mention butter
Freya - love it
Elizabeth - meh
Miranda - great name, I have a cousin called Miranda suits her perfectly
Rose - nah
Isolde - not sure how you pronounce this, is old?
Iris - its ok

CaffiSaliMali · 11/03/2020 10:20

I like it, but never know how to pronounce it. I would pronounce it like the herb i.e. rose muh ree/Rosemarie. But my parents pronounce it Rose-Mary, with Mary pronounced like the name Mary. Like in the Edison Lighthouse song 'Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes'.

I like both pronunciations. I used to prefer the Rosemarie spelling, but I worked with a ghastly woman called Rosemarie and now prefer the Rosemary spelling.

I think it's a lovely name and ripe for revival.

user1469190646 · 11/03/2020 10:16

I like Miranda the best.

Rosemary is a bit dated

Bluejaune · 11/03/2020 09:34

Refreshing not dated.

I like Elizabeth too.

Isthistrueor · 11/03/2020 09:14

It makes me think of the horror film Rosemary’s baby I’m afraid...

funmummy48 · 11/03/2020 07:58

I love it but am not vegan or homespun 😂

Mummyeyes · 11/03/2020 07:57

Rosemary has always been popular with the sort of vegan hippies who wear colourful homespun while tending their allotments and trying to swap yoga lessons for local currency tokens.

Krazynights34 · 11/03/2020 00:39

Rosemary is beautiful to me. Especially I like it because it’s Rosemary for remembrance. But then again I called my DD’s Grace and Lydia so I think I like old fashioned and what I think of as lyrical names.

I live Isolde.
I like Flora (considered it for DD2).
I also loved
Ada
Georgiana
Clara
Cora
Emmeline
Dora
Lisette
Alina
Eliana
Harriet (DH hated it).

Recently I’ve lived
Delphine
Josephine
Francine (all the INE’s)
Clarissa
Celeste
Vivienne
Victoria

Nat6999 · 10/03/2020 23:38

I named my dd who I lost Rosie, my partner had wanted his first daughter to have Rose in her name but her mum dumped my partner & didn't use it. So I chose Rosie for him.

Whatsyourflava · 10/03/2020 22:43

Love Iris Elizabeth and Freya
