What do you think of the name Floran for a boy?

I love Florian, but am neither brave enough or cool enough to use it.

The first time I ever encountered a Florian, we were both in Austria. I'd seen his name written down first before I met him and assumed it was a girl.

Of course, I was the foreigner and he had a perfectly normal male name for his country, but I reckon a lot of Brits, when encountering the name in Britain, would also assume it was a girl's name.

It's silly really, because, in the UK at least, we tend to have a lot of male names which can be made into female names with the addition of a letter or two at the end, but it doesn't seem to work the other way around. People would see 'Flora' and lock it in their minds as female, regardless of any extra letters.

Of course, I'm writing Florian as if it was a typo (which it may or may not have been), but the same would be the case with Floran - more so, in fact, as people might possibly be aware of Florian as a continental European boy's name, whereas they wouldn't have heard of Floran at all.

Florent is a boy's name in France. Is that what you were thinking of, maybe?

vitaminC · 09/03/2020 21:00

Florian is quite nice. I know a couple who are both lovely.
I agree with everyone else that Floran is not actually a name.

strawberry2017 · 09/03/2020 20:59

I don't like it, it doesn't sound like a real name to me - sorry

MrsSchadenfreude · 09/03/2020 20:58

Florin is a common Romanian boy’s name.

Sprigware · 09/03/2020 20:56

Quite like Florian, if that’s what you meant.

TheVanguardSix · 09/03/2020 20:56

Florian always makes me think of some Alpine yodeler.

strawberrylipgloss · 09/03/2020 20:55

It's like you wanted to name the baby Flora but had a boy so cane up with Floran.

screamer1 · 09/03/2020 20:54

I love Florian.

cushioncovers · 09/03/2020 20:53

Sounds like an air freshener

NotTheMrMenAgain · 09/03/2020 20:52

I really like Florian (assume Florin is a mistype?). I don't think it sounds feminine or wet - but them I dislike typical, single syllable 'manly' boys names. I also like Gabriel and Jaygo (Cornish) so my taste might not be typical!

ihaveaquestionplease · 09/03/2020 20:46

Just, no.

MamaDane · 09/03/2020 20:45

Seems a bit girly. But I tend to like feminine names for boys. Prefer Florian though.

Just be careful naming your son feminine sounding names and consider bullying.

Merename · 09/03/2020 20:43

I know a German Florian who goes by ‘Flo’ and I love that!

AgeLikeWine · 09/03/2020 20:20

Florian is a perfectly good traditional German / Austrian name. Floran is a typo.

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 09/03/2020 20:05

Florian?

TheJoxter · 09/03/2020 20:02

Oh and the Florian I know lives in England and it definitely ‘works’ as a name

TheJoxter · 09/03/2020 20:01

I’ve not come across Floran but I know a Florin and a Florian. All lovely names!

GaraMedouar · 09/03/2020 19:58

Florian is fine if you’re French. I don’t think it works in the UK.

DidoLamenting · 09/03/2020 19:56

Florin the coin is never to my knowledge spelled floran. I don’t quite know what you’re trying to argue

Well I have no idea what point you are making.

I never said florin the coin was spelt Floran. Floran said out loud sounds the same as florin.

Possibly the OP has heard the word florin somewhere, which has quite a pretty sound, and thought it was a name.

RosehipRuthie · 09/03/2020 18:54

Do you mean Florian? If so, I quite like it, but it's quite a feminine boys name which not all boys would be able to carry (see also Gabriel, Jesse).
If it's Floran, no I don't like it. As a PP said, it sounds like someone mispronouncing "foreign"

knightlight · 09/03/2020 18:01

Never heard it before....but LOVE it.

IntermittentParps · 09/03/2020 17:52

Floran is not a name of anything. Yes, I know.

whether it is spelled Floran or Florin (the sound is the same) it is a 2s piece. Florin the coin is never to my knowledge spelled floran. I don’t quite know what you’re trying to argue.

TenThousandSpoons · 09/03/2020 17:41

I hate it. Sorry.
