We are keen on the name Robin should we have a boy but are concerned people will say 'what you robin Robin' etc. Is that likely ?

It’s short for Robert. You are right to be a little wary but I don’t think it’s worrying as long as you don’t pair it with anything dubious….

Did laugh at Robin Banks Grin Also probably not Robin Hood, Goode, or Wood, not Hudson….or Robin Cook….

I’d also steer clear if you were using a profession surname, anything with red in it or most proper nouns.

Eg Robin Plumber, Robin Barber, probably not good. Robin Reddington, no. Robin Church. Robin Gold. Robin Silver. Robin Cradle Shock

I wouldn’t use Peter or Paul as middle names.

I have a 10 year Robin and the "robbing" thing has never come up for us . X

Lordfrontpaw · 03/03/2020 15:16

On our family it was ‘daft robin tweet tweet’. 😂

meandmyboyz · 03/03/2020 15:10

I have a 6 year old robin , we've never had any negative comments and the "robbing" thing has never come up for us .

CorianderLord · 03/03/2020 10:52

Have never known anyone say this to my friend Robin. You're overthinking unless you live a criminal lifestyle and imagine your child will in fact start robbing

Whatsyourflava · 03/03/2020 10:50
  • that’s the 2018 official ONS government stats
Whatsyourflava · 03/03/2020 10:50

Yes agree @Thisismytimetoshine

most recent stats shows there’s 3 times as many boys called “Robin” than girls

I love the name Robin and is on top of list for potential future son

stairgates · 03/03/2020 09:43

I think every name will have a nickname or comment to it so if you love it go for it. I will also add though that the only robin I knew, male, also hated it and only went by his nickname.

Thisismytimetoshine · 03/03/2020 09:39

I don’t think it’s feminine at all, I’d actually expect too see a male when I hear the name, even though I know it’s unisex. I think it’s predominantly used for boys.

AuntyMcAoife · 03/03/2020 00:13

I have a friend called Robin. He absolutely hates it - and has changed his name by dead poll. He thinks it is very feminine and he is almost 7 foot.

LarkDescending · 03/03/2020 00:01

As long as your surname isn’t Banks, I don’t see an issue Smile

Lovely name - I know the cutest 2-month-old Robin.

SausageSimon · 02/03/2020 21:44

I want a Robin in future, I love it Smile

whatshouldicallme · 02/03/2020 21:37

Have never thought or heard of Robin as robbing. Go for it.

Whatsyourflava · 02/03/2020 12:39

I absolutely adore the name Robin and don’t really follow your concern about Rob-ing. Can’t see this being an issue. Please don’t let that put you off such a gorgeous name

Nowayorhighway · 02/03/2020 12:30

Never even considered it. My friend’s DD is Robyn and I’ve always thought it was a lovely name.

eatanazurecrayon · 02/03/2020 10:28

Thanks all! That's put my mind at ease. 😊

I too have a Robyn. She would have been a Robin had she been a boy. Never had any negativity around her name.. quite the opposite, actually. Have your Robin. It's a lovely name (biased Grin) plus there's the benefit of it being not overly popular.

Elmo230885 · 01/03/2020 22:18

Lovely name, which is why I have a 10 months old DS Robin

Letthemysterybe · 01/03/2020 22:12

It’s a lovely name. I’d think of Christopher Robin before Batman!

MirandaGoshawk · 01/03/2020 22:10

I think it's a gorgeous name. Not worth worrying about 'robbing' - it's just daft.

june2007 · 01/03/2020 22:09

No I have known a few Robins of both geners and no that's not been an issue. I guess if someoene can take the micky they will if not by your name in some other way.

WickedlyPetite · 01/03/2020 22:01

Unless you raise a thief, I doubt your child will ever hear that phrase in his life.

Batman jokes however....

4amWitchingHour · 01/03/2020 21:58

Any silly phrase or nickname can be made up for any name. If you like the name, use it!

Jem018 · 01/03/2020 21:48

My husband is called Robin and has never had any comments like that. He likes his name. We are Scottish too. We do get lots of Xmas cards with Robins on them - but we like that..

Thisismytimetoshine · 01/03/2020 21:22

Yes, robbing is stealing to me as well, but honestly, I know three Robins (including a female Robyn) and it really isn’t an issue.
