Brother for Greta

Hello! Smile

Just found out we're having a boy - and we find boys names a bit harder! Our daughter is Greta, partly for the Germanic roots (my Dad is German), and surname begins with C, so no names ending in a c/k or they feel a bit unfinished. I also have Scottish heritage and my husband had an Italian grandfather, so I do like the idea of perhaps finding names that speak to our ancestory.

The list from last time plus a few more.. Any input/other suggestions very welcome!

Willem (I love, husband not so keen)
Ned
Hugh
Roscoe
Eamon
Leander
Ned (I like Edward shortened to Ned, but husband doesn't)

Help please! Confused

Oh I'd definitely go for Hugo instead - lovely, properly Germanic but also cool.

Hugo Willem is ace.

Alexander is a great international name, and has great Scottish and German namesakes.

Laurence also.

Thomas, Samuel and Nathan are in the Italian top 50 now, so some names are spelled the same.

Hugh is my favourite from your list, followed by Ned.

How about:
Hamish
Angus
Felix
Emil
Levin
Tobias
Otto
Otis
Rudy
Kellan
Milo

You put Ned twice on your list so looks like you love this name indeed 😉

Roscoe doesn't sound to me like a person's name, or at least not a first name. That's just me though.

I think it may help to define further what you're looking for. Do you want a German name ? An Italian name ? A Scottish name ? One that works in all three languages ?

If the latter you'll have a bit of a hard time finding something that doesn't get pronounced / written differently. For instance, John - Johann - Gian.

Here are a few names that may work in English :

  • Axel (scandinavian but used in Germany)
  • Luca (common in Italy but also in GB) or Lukas if you want to go German
  • Johann (sort of works in English, also used in Eastern France I think).
  • Max (about the most international name)
  • Edwin (if you like Ned - this is more German)
  • Leo (also international though very common in GB nowadays) Can also be Leopold if you go more German.
  • Hugo might be more common than Hugh in Germany/Italy
  • Leander - not a bad choice, and I'm almost sure Leandro exists in Italy
