Boys Names dilemma!

MarieNorthway · 26/02/2020 18:24

I have a week and a half left to register my baby boy but really struggling with a name!
Both our surnames end in y and although I'm not sure if we will use 1 or double barrel, I think a name ending in y might be too much!

The only names I have are Ace or Finn!

I like unusual names but don't want too obscure and 1s you can't pronounce!
Do you like either of my ideas or any other suggestions?! Thanks!

My husband is called Asa. He's never been called 'Asser'. Maybe he's just not met people who are that rude. Or that stupid. It's an old Hebrew name.

Bezalelle · 05/03/2020 15:46

Is Asa a name that people actually use with that spelling? Surely it leaves the kid open to a world of teasing from people who think it's "Asser". I would spell it Acer.

Ash
Ellis
Cade

Ace reminds me of Ace Ventura. In my opinion it's a bit too "out there." Try it out for a few days and see if you are comfortable saying it aloud.

A few pp's saying "give him your surname"; can I ask why this is? Not saying she shouldn't, just wondering why it is being suggested so much,

FagashJackie · 05/03/2020 03:48

Give him your surname.

FagashJackie · 05/03/2020 03:47

Valentin is a great first name, if that's when he was born.

Astronica · 05/03/2020 03:41

I love Finn.

MarieNorthway · 04/03/2020 21:59

I had another middle name in mind as he was born exactly at the time of sunrise on that day so wanted something relevant to that! So 1st name will be Finn/Finlay or Ace. Think I need to keep saying them over and over to see what I prefer. Not sure if Ace reminds me more of a dogs name or something?!

@MarieNorthway I think as you’re still unsure and would need Ace to “grow on you” you should pick Finn and have Ace as the middle name. If he prefers that name when older he can always use it. So many people go by their middle names. Even our prime minister!

MarieNorthway · 01/03/2020 21:17

I like Ace more for the meaning of the name rather than how it sounds if that makes sense?! It's either going safe with Finn or risking a name I'm not sure about but hoping it grows on me?!

Probably already been suggested but how about Asa, Asher, Seth?

weegiemum · 01/03/2020 19:29

Ace just makes me think of Ace Rimmer

"Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast"

But I think that's showing my age!

MarieNorthway · 01/03/2020 18:49

No, still not decided! I like the idea of Ace as so different but just keep thinking 'can I see myself calling that in a park or as he's an adult!'

I saw this name the other day at work, the parcel was going to Ireland. Oran

DressingGown87 · 28/02/2020 22:05

I like Finn.

IMO Ace is too out there, having a step child with an unusual name, he hated it when he started school.

littlealexhorne · 28/02/2020 21:31

I like both actually, but would choose Ace

Quizeerascal · 28/02/2020 20:08

I prefer Asa to Ace, Finn is a good name too but as others have said there's quite a lot of them around

PlantPotting · 28/02/2020 19:17

Have you decided @MarieNorthway

MikeUniformMike · 28/02/2020 19:08

Give the baby your surname.

Wintersun13 · 26/02/2020 20:17

There are some unusual names that could use Ace as a nickname :

Acelin
Asa
Asher
Aspen

Same with Finn :

Finlay
Finian
Fintan

Or else how about Neil, Aaron, Aiden ?

badg3r · 26/02/2020 20:14

I like Finn but it is very common so not sure if that bothers you if you like unusual names? I know loads of baby and toddler Finn/Finleys. Really love Christopher nn Kit!

Rosalo · 26/02/2020 20:11

Asa.

emmathedilemma · 26/02/2020 20:10

I like Finn or Flynn. Ace I just can't take seriously, imagine using it to address a senior manager at work.....

TeetotalKoala · 26/02/2020 20:09

Ace is funky. Finn is popular. Both are nice but wildly different.
