I'm expecting a second child and struggling with name ideas. Not sure of the gender yet but would like something unique that you don't find often. My husband is a botanist which is why we called our daughter Sequoiadendron (Sequoia for short!) and we're looking for something similar that's plant related.
Thanks in advance for the help fellow mums!! :)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I’m a teacher.

My kids, Requires Improvement and Outstanding, have no issues at all with their names.

And we’ll finish family therapy very soon, so that’s good.

XH was a Doctor and I'm a WW2 Historian, I actually think it's sweet way to add a personal touch to your child's name.

We named our DD Herpes Hitler.

Our local pest control officer has children called Rat, Cockroach and Warfarin. And you don't want to know what the sewage worker's children are called.

Lipperfromchipper · 26/02/2020 23:25

What’s your job OP!? Maybe something to compliment your job instead? Grin

lovelyjubbly40 · 26/02/2020 23:20

Acer?

FlaskMaster · 26/02/2020 23:19

Of course after Twentypercentoff was circumcised we called him TwentyOnepercentoff. It's important to get these things just right.

Oh, what an incredible name! I love it when parents give their DC names related to things they are passionate about.

We have a friend who is a sea captain. His DD is called 'Sealoa' (sea-LOW-ah). Which I think is the most beautiful-sounding name. It stands for 'Sea Level Over All', or something like that.

OP, ignore people slating your DC's names. Their DC probably have really boring names.

Azalea

Defenbaker · 26/02/2020 23:09

Ha ha ha, this thread is hilarious!
Loving your sense of humour OP (because surely you can't be serious).

@Flaskmaster - loving your work!

Daisy was popular a few years ago. I guess that’s gone out of fashion now? What’s wrong with Daisy??

whattodo2019 · 26/02/2020 22:42

Azalea

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 26/02/2020 20:26

Please. You cannot name a child Rhododendron. Might as well call them Fatsia Japonica.

FlaskMaster · 26/02/2020 19:47

The Shard's best friend, Bethany, has a cousin called Hedge Fund! Now that sounds fucking ridiculous until you hear that her mum is actually a financial advisor. So, that makes sense.

Serenschintte · 26/02/2020 15:56

Heather or the Latin version Erica.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/02/2020 15:49

It's quite funny how some things 'work' as names and others don't. Actually, Sequoia 'works' fine imo - it's the 'dendron' part which makes people look askance. It's essentially a more pretentious version of calling a child eg Willowtree rather than Willow.

FlaskMaster · 26/02/2020 14:06

Well as an architect I naturally called mine "Burj Khalifa" "Sidney Opera House" and "The Shard". My husband works for Next and number 4 was born on the date of their big sale so we called them "Twenty percent off". We ran out of ideas for number 5 so we put it to a public vote and "Baby McBabyface" will be born in July. Can't wait!

Booboostwo · 26/02/2020 13:52

I don’t think people are insulting the name OP, it’s a perfectly reasonable name of a tree species...they are mainly taking the piss out of you for lumping a child with it.

AnneKipanki · 26/02/2020 13:13

It is popular in Oregon @LonginesPrime .

LonginesPrime · 26/02/2020 13:03

Sorry to disappoint, but I was only joking - although, as you say, Mumsnet is an education so I'm sure it's common somewhere!

N12345625 · 26/02/2020 13:02

Demetra for a girl?

AnneKipanki · 26/02/2020 12:52

Are you in the USA @LonginesPrime?

Just had a quick google because I am bothered with my nose . Apparently Ssisyquoia was a man , who answered to the english name of George , before he was a tree.
He was a very talented Cherokee.

AnneKipanki · 26/02/2020 12:42

With the dendron bit added on @LonginesPrime

AnneKipanki · 26/02/2020 12:40

Is it ?
Mumsnet is an education . I do mean that , not sarcasm BTW.

LonginesPrime · 26/02/2020 12:39

Actually, AnneKipanki, it's a really common name where I live...
