I'm expecting a second child and struggling with name ideas. Not sure of the gender yet but would like something unique that you don't find often. My husband is a botanist which is why we called our daughter Sequoiadendron (Sequoia for short!) and we're looking for something similar that's plant related.
Thanks in advance for the help fellow mums!! :)

Tobacco for a boy.
Marijuana for a girl.

Fagus for boy. Latin for beech tree.

Fag for short

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 25/02/2020 11:44

Poison ivy - it’ll make her sound like a marvel villain.
Poison oak if it’s a boy

I hope this is a joke...

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 25/02/2020 11:44

Quercus for a boy. It’s Latin for oak.

Quirky for short.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/02/2020 11:43

Cannabaceae

Krong · 25/02/2020 11:41

Planty mc-flower bush

womaninblue · 25/02/2020 11:41

Well done, you've lumbered your child with a name they're going to have to spend the rest of their lives pronouncing and explaining and spelling out to everyone they meet.

GabsAlot · 25/02/2020 11:41

Reminds me of the sp n Friends when ross and rachel are thinking of names rachel likes sequioa ross doesnt

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 25/02/2020 11:41

I hope she doesn’t have to write the whole thing on her school bag. It will never fit.

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 25/02/2020 11:40

I actually like Sequoia but the dendron is too much.

I concur.

saraclara · 25/02/2020 11:40

I thought this was going to be a joke thread.

Crikey.

SirTobyBelch · 25/02/2020 11:40

Helleborus foetidus?
(Stinky for short)

Love the name OP! My partner is an accountant, we don't have kids yet but we've saved Depreciation and Gross Margin for our first two..

Grin

or.. Biscuit

alltakingandnogiving · 25/02/2020 11:39

Quercus robur

BarbaraofSeville · 25/02/2020 11:38

Because names like Rose or Lily would have made them look stupid, no?

I'd go for Venus Fly Trap, with the Fly Trap bit being silent, and probably not if your last name is Williams.

Morgan12 · 25/02/2020 11:38

That's some name!

LizzieMacQueen · 25/02/2020 11:36

(Not very practical to have a name people misspell, mispronounce or too long for most form filling)

Beetroot could be a cool sibling name though.

teapotter · 25/02/2020 11:36

Something shorter? Def not longer. On a purely practical note when official forms require a full name they often only have space for 12 letters. Let alone databases at school etc. According to the U.K. government site, (google maximum name length) the dvla only accept full names with total letters

FakeFraudSquad · 25/02/2020 11:35

Pretty sure the OP isn’t actually serious @Co0kPassBabtridge

Although when I came to enter a perfectly normally named pupil, James, for his GCSEs I discovered his full name was actually James Tiberius Kirk Surname. His parents were Trekkies.

Went to school with a Chelsea Francesca Claire (Chelsea FC!).

Have come across lots of Star Wars inspired names too - George Lucas Surname, Luke Skywalker Surname, Leia Organa Surname etc.

There are some genuinely batshit people out there!

BendyLikeBeckham · 25/02/2020 11:35

Can I please be the first to call Classics this early on in the thread? Grin

My contribution would be Delphinium (Delphi for short) for a girl or Fortis Aesculus (Strong winter oak) for a boy.

I actually like Sequoia but the dendron is too much.

WatcherintheRye · 25/02/2020 11:34

Se-coy-ah-den-drun

Good job you clarified, op! I would have said 'Se-kwoy-ah-den-drun', but I would have been wrong!

Actually the name's growing on me Grin
