I'm expecting a second child and struggling with name ideas. Not sure of the gender yet but would like something unique that you don't find often. My husband is a botanist which is why we called our daughter Sequoiadendron (Sequoia for short!) and we're looking for something similar that's plant related.
Thanks in advance for the help fellow mums!! :)

"Orchid", from the Latin word "orchis", meaning "bollocks".*

  • True fact, the roots supposedly look like balls.

Dandelion for a boy. Although perhaps he'll grow up and change his name to Jaskier.

For a girl? Phalaenopsis. You can call her Phae for short. Grin

HuskyloverI congratulations on completely missing the joke.

jaspercatx · 25/02/2020 12:00

What about Photosynthesis? or Synthia for short

BarbaraofSeville · 25/02/2020 12:00

What is your job OP? I think, instead of picking a name to match Sequoiadendron, you should pick a name that reflects your profession.

I hate it when I have no idea whether the OP that looks like a joke is actually real.

Although I once knew an Archibald Archibald

Ah, but there is an Archidendron plant, so in keeping with the theme, he could be Archie for short.

(Or you could just call her Hazel) 😄

BarbaraofSeville · 25/02/2020 11:50

Well done, you've lumbered your child with a name they're going to have to spend the rest of their lives pronouncing and explaining and spelling out to everyone they meet

Well to be fair, I have to do that and my first name is a very common (in both senses of the word) UK name with two spellings and my last name is short and the same as a fairly well known place and yet people still pronounce it differently to how I've just said to them and write it down incorrectly.

boats · 25/02/2020 11:50

People are so snobby are rude on here.

I think Sequoiadendron is a gorgeous unique name @claudethelad - I hope no one has upset you.

How about Candida for your next child? It’s a bag fungus unfortunately but still a pretty sounding name. Nickname Candy but I prefer full name Candida

PigletJohn · 25/02/2020 11:47
