Name change

Ironman140 · 21/02/2020 11:39

Has anybody or would anybody change their babies name at 3 months old? I'm really regretting my daughter's name, I have mentioned it to my partner a couple of time, he's not impressed that I want to change it but will if it's really bothering me. Am I being ridiculous? I do feel I will be happier if we change it or should o just suck it up and regret it in silence?

Naomi is lovely. Charlotte is so boring, a ten a penny name. Naomi is just beautiful.

BabyB19 · 29/02/2020 10:24

I would be more worried that when she is older she would regret you changing it from one to the other?! Maybe you could add Charlotte in as a middle name and then call her Charlotte, still giving her the option to pick Naomi when she is older if she prefers it?

Charis1503 · 28/02/2020 21:27

Naomi is probably my least favorite name ever....

Lottie one of my favs.

If you are having reservations now... change it!! In a few years no one will remember she was naomi... but you will still remember how you wished you had changed it!!

FizzyGreenWater · 27/02/2020 18:30

Change it!

It's easy before a year. Nobody will think it odd.

I'd add Charlotte as the first name and just budge the others along (does she have a current middle name?)

Charlotte Naomi is lovely. I do like Naomi but more written down than said - I prefer Charlotte (love Lottie).

Quizeerascal · 27/02/2020 15:54

I'm not sure what your concern is about Naomi not being English. As others have said Naomi is Hebrew in origin (from a brilliant Bible story fwiw) but seems to be common enough in the UK. I slightly prefer it to Charlotte but they're both lovely names. The Naomi's I've known haven't gone by shortened versions. As others have said you can't control nicknames but I would be surprised if a Naomi became 'Omi', it doesn't seem inevitable.

bluemoon2468 · 27/02/2020 15:46

There are loads of Naomis... why would they get bullied? I have no idea what anyone's name is backwards. I also know two adult Naomis and both are known as their full name, not Nay or Omi.

LexiM · 22/02/2020 00:30

I personally hadn’t even realised what it spelt backwards but also think it doesn’t matter what everyone here thinks, if it’s really bothering you I would bring it up with your husband again. I know it seems a bit odd but I would probably start calling her Charlotte if that’s what you agree and then change after a few weeks, saves you changing it then using it and regretting it.

Wintersun13 · 22/02/2020 00:01

There's nothing wrong with Naomi and I don't think she'd get bullied.

But I think whether you should change it really depends on why you feel this way. Do you suddenly hate Naomi, or do you just like Charlotte better ?

When you think about her name, do you think about how Naomi is a bad choice, or do you focus on how nice Charlotte sounds ?

If you suddenly hate a name you used to love, for no reason, I'd try to dig deeper and really understand the root of this sudden dislike. Otherwise you might change it only to find a reason why you hate the new name.

If you just love Charlotte, I'd go ahead and change it.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/02/2020 21:46

If you are going to change it. Do it ASAP. In a few months she'll know her name. If they're under 12 months I think you get a wh ole new BC.

user1493494961 · 21/02/2020 20:45

Charlotte is much nicer, I would change it.

glitterbiscuits · 21/02/2020 16:17

Naomi is a lovely name! Classic and not 'foreign ' at all.

I have a neighbour called Naomi who is lovely and no one has ever said anything about
' I moan' at all to her. In the same way no one has ever ever tried to say my name backwards.

amazedmummy · 21/02/2020 16:03

I know a Naomi. She's a good friends younger sister. She was never picked on for her name (we were at school at the same time). She really likes her name and the only person that ever mentioned that it was I moan backwards was her sister while they were squabbling. I think it's a lovely name. Unusual but not too out there.

Omashu · 21/02/2020 15:53

Naomi is beautiful! Not unusual but not overused like Charlotte 🙂

MikeUniformMike · 21/02/2020 14:17

I'm not keen about Naomi, but have nothing against it, and it is quite different to Charlotte.
Your daughter is young enough for a name change to be fairly easy.

Nimmy March, actor, is Naomi on her BC.

Charlotte Naomi is very pretty.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 21/02/2020 13:04

Naomi is lovely. Never known anyone make fun of it.

Nicknames - you can't do anything about that. My friend called her daughter Eve as it couldn't be shortened. She spent her teenage years being called Evs.

hattyhatshats · 21/02/2020 12:58

I love both but I think Naomi is more unusual, I know a lot of charlottes.

I grew up with a Naomi no one ever said "I moan " at her

CaffiSaliMali · 21/02/2020 12:33

Naomi is really beautiful! As is Charlotte.

Naomi hits that sweet spot of a name which is unusual enough that there won't be 5 in her class, but also well known enough that people will have heard of it.

Why don't you try calling her Charlotte for a while and see which you prefer? Also, does Naomi have a middle name you could use? If you did change to Charlotte then Charlotte Naomi is a lovely name if you wanted to keep Naomi in there as well.

LittlePearl · 21/02/2020 12:20

I should have said, he was 8 months old at the time. As he got older he just didn't look like the name we first chose, and looked more and more like the other name that he has now had for twenty-something years.

Sound silly but it's true.

MissBridgetJones · 21/02/2020 12:16

I think it's a very pretty name.

Names will always be shortened - Charlotte (also a pretty name) will become Lottie (lovely) or Charlie... (which I dislike)!

LittlePearl · 21/02/2020 12:16

We did it.

We actually asked all our friends and family which of the two names they thought suited our son best - the one we'd originally chosen or another that I'd always loved but for complicated reasons had discounted.

Incredibly all but two said they thought he looked more like the 'new' name than the first one. So we changed it. Never looked back, never regretted the decision.

Spied · 21/02/2020 12:12

Love Naomi. Beautiful.
I really think you are over thinking this.
Really I doubt most children would be analysing the backward spelling and in my 40 years I've never realized what it spelt backwards ( and I notice things like this usuallyGrin). Still, it wouldn't bother me.

Sexnotgender · 21/02/2020 12:11

Naomi is lovely, I thought you’d picked something ludicrous like nevaeh!

I used to work with an absolutely lovely Naomi, no one called her Nay or Omi, no mention of how it read backwards.

Charlotte is lovely but really popular now.

Astronica · 21/02/2020 12:11

It's fine to change it and people do. If this is going to hang over you as a regret and sadness then you should go ahead and do it. It sounds like you don't like Naomi much and do really like Charlotte. Take a week or two and call her Charlotte to try it out, then go ahead if you still feel the same way.

Mlou32 · 21/02/2020 12:08

Naomi is a lovely name. I've known a couple of Naomi's and want even aware of what it spells backwards.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 21/02/2020 12:07

It sounds like you might be feeling a bit hormonal at the monent, and that is making this bigger than it should be - fwiw, it’s a lovely name and is perfectly “English” (i know it is Hewbrew in origin but so are Abigail and Michael etc, it’s not your first thought on hearing them.) the being bullied for what her name spells backwards is a bit of a stretch, i’m pretty sure that would never come up.

BUT...if you don’t like it, you don’t need justification to change it, just do it Smile
