I'm due in 3 days time and we are going in circles when it comes to a girls name. Boys name we found easy, it's decided! As a frequent stalker of these boards I would REALLY appreciate some impartial input :-)

One name we both like is Juliet but I really dislike Jules or Julie which seem the inevitable nicknames? The reasons we like it are that it is timeless, will work at any age, and is pretty without being cutesey. Another we both like is Isabel, for the same reasons, but we can't use it and besides that it seems to be very popular now.

Names I like, but that my other half thinks are a bit out there:
Laelia
Celia
Celina
Cecily
Callista (nn Callie)
Penelope
Esther

And names my other half likes, but that I find a bit boring:
Zoe
Sophie
Emily
Lucy
Annabel

Our surname is one syllable and starts with a D. Middle names would preferably be Alice and/or Diana for family reasons.

Any input on the above names or suggestions would be SO APPRECIATED! I'm going mad! Thank you!

You could make it Julietta (or Juliana) to avoid the t-d sound.

diddlediddle · 18/02/2020 07:48

Penelope and Tabitha are both beautiful names, I prefer them to be honest. And will go much better with your surname. My name when shortened runs badly into my last name and it's really annoying so I would suggest avoiding that!

Astronica · 17/02/2020 23:13

Just saw your update - I love Tabitha too. I think going well with the surname is a really important consideration and unfortunately I had to cross off a couple of favourite names as they weren't ideal with the surname.

EllaWallace · 17/02/2020 21:57

@diddlediddle that's my only reservation with Juliet! Penelope or Tabitha probably go together with our surname better. Oh the dilemma!

@Astronica thank you and very true - in fairness the Juliet I know is never shortened but she's French and I feel like they're less obsessed with shortening names!

@DollyDaydream70 we had previously thought Tabitha as it is so pretty. But I am worried it's not really a grown up name... probably the Beatrix Potter association... maybe I'm overthinking it?!

Another vote for Ettie as a NN for Juliet! I also like Loretta (Etta as NN)

diddlediddle · 17/02/2020 20:16

I see you've chosen Juliet but to my mind that runs badly into a surname beginning with D. It's the T and D next to each other, bit of a tongue twister, especially if shortened to Etta.

Wintersun13 · 17/02/2020 19:57

Another nickname option - Etta.

IckleBear · 17/02/2020 03:57

Juliet :)

maddiemookins16mum · 16/02/2020 07:07

Imogen Alice

Astronica · 15/02/2020 23:31

I love Juliet too and want to back up the suggestions of Ettie or Jet as short forms. I've known Juliets only ever called Juliet though. You can just say 'no, it's Juliet' to people who try Jules or Julie. I've known plenty of people who've controlled how their name was shortened or not. Other options if you want them are Jilly and Etta.

I also think Penelope and Esther are lovely options.

guineapig1 · 15/02/2020 23:07

Juliet /Juliette is a lovely name. I have a good friend who is a Juliette but called Lettie by friends and family

Backhometothenorth · 15/02/2020 23:04

It's funny as Ettie is a nickname for both Esther and Juliette. All fabulous.

coffeeandbiscuittime · 15/02/2020 20:15

I have an Esther , we call her Esther, Estie, Ettie ( amongst other things🤣🤣)

DollyDaydream70 · 15/02/2020 20:11

P.S. Juliette and Esther are both beautiful, timeless names. Wishing you a safe delivery xxx

DollyDaydream70 · 15/02/2020 20:10

Ooh and not forgetting Tabitha and Genevieve!

DollyDaydream70 · 15/02/2020 20:08

I like Blythe, that would be my personal choice atm. I also like old fashioned names: Dolly, Dotty, Ruby, Nesta, Nadine, Aster, Iris, Ivy, Nadia, Nellie, Primrose, Delphine, Violet, Pansy, Marigold, Sage. And I have two very posh sounding names that I love: Hortense and Octavia.

Thefaceofboe · 15/02/2020 20:00

I really love Juliet! Never thought of nn Ettie but it works

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 15/02/2020 15:10

Sorry just saw you will do Juliet. Lovely choice. Ettie is cute!

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 15/02/2020 15:09

I'm loving Astrid Diana. Or Penelope Alice or Callista Diane

My taste is more with your than your partners!

I notice a pattern that you both like some Greek names so I'll suggest:

Iris
Iliana
Arianna
Lyra
Celina
Corrina

I'm also thinking about Ingrid.

EllaWallace · 15/02/2020 15:08

Thank you so much everyone, I can't tell you how helpful this has been! My mind has been put at rest re Juliet as I love Ettie or Jet as nicknames. Will just have to start calling her one of those from square one so that Jules doesn't occur to anyone!!

THANK YOU!

I was going to suggest Ettie or Lettie for Juliet! I would pick Juliet or Ester (nn Essie) from your lists. Good luck!! Please let us know what you decide :) xx

Whatsyourflava · 15/02/2020 14:07

I love Penelope Lucy Emily Zoe and Sophie from your list.

I don’t really like Juliette as it always gets shortened to Jules not Ettie

Other suggestions (but I prefer your lists):

Willa
Imogen
Sadie
Edith / Edie
Margaret /Maggie
Clementine/ Clemmie
Roxanne/Roxanna
Pearl
Delilah
Ottilie nn Ottie
Cora
Eliza
River
Winter
Jemima
Holly
Cleo
Mabel

Poundcakelindsay · 15/02/2020 13:07

Juliette and Lucy are the absolute best from your list! Neither are ever overly popular and both are simply timeless
