I have a Samuel /Sam so I'm biased but I love the name, he's nearly 15 now and there are only 5 of them including him in his entire 300+ school year. There is a hamish in my daughters yr6 class (we're in the UK) and just asked her if his name gets shortened and she said he gets hame and yes he does get ham!!! 😂 😂 😂

Whatsyourflava · 17/02/2020 08:38

@Foxes157 yes I’ve just checked the statistics and there’s 75% less Samuels now than there was 15-20 years ago! It’s about to leave the top 40. I think it’s a lovely name and like you say much rarer now. I don’t know any

december20100 · 17/02/2020 07:56

Samuel.

finallychangedmyusername · 17/02/2020 06:33

Samuel is one of my top boys names. It's just so handsome. I've also never met a Sam/Samuel before who wasn't a nice guy/kid. It's just one of those names that makes you smile as you say it.

Foxes157 · 16/02/2020 22:32

Samuel, unless you have Scottish connections. But I'm biased.

It's decreased in popularity a lot in recent years, and until secondary school he was the only one. Unfortunately he now seems to be friends with every Sam in his year.

TatianaLarina · 16/02/2020 18:58

Hamish by a million miles.

Sam is such boring everywhere name.

Know two Hamishes neither have ever been Ham.

Cookit · 16/02/2020 17:02

Both decent names.

Why would Hamish become Ham??

emmathedilemma · 16/02/2020 16:13

Hamish (I also have never come across one shortened to Ham!)

Mamabear88 · 16/02/2020 13:39

Samuel

MyuMe · 16/02/2020 13:28

Samuel is a wonderful name.

Sam works really well for a boy and a man.

Astronica · 15/02/2020 23:33

I've known several Hamish's, all outside Scotland and with no Scots heritage. It's a popular name in lots of places. I've never come across one shortened to Ham. Great name.

EllaWallace · 15/02/2020 23:00

Both are great names! I think I very slightly prefer Hamish but Samuel is a strong and classic name.

If you like the Scottish vibe then I do like Lachlan as suggested above, Alexander, Ewan or Gordon nn Gordie.

ParsleyPot · 15/02/2020 22:22

Hamish

OnABeachSomewhere · 15/02/2020 18:06

Hamish is a great name.

diddlediddle · 15/02/2020 17:53

Hamish has a bit more personality about it, I'd go for that although both are nice

midsomermurderess · 15/02/2020 17:50

I'm Scottish and I have never come across a Hamish shortened to Ham.I like both it and Samuel, so sorry, no help there.

assilem92 · 15/02/2020 17:14

Samuel

steppemum · 15/02/2020 17:14

I wouldn't say Ham as a nn, because it doesn't sound liek Ham. I can imagine it being shortened to 'Hame' (don't know how you would spell that)

steppemum · 15/02/2020 17:13

I like both, but I think Sam is a boring nn, when Samuel is a cool full name.

Love Hamish. It is quite scottish sounding, if you are OK with that?

RoseMartha · 15/02/2020 17:10

Samuel

SebandAlice · 15/02/2020 15:11

Samuel

Jossina · 14/02/2020 23:44

I've know two Hamish's, one in Britain, one in the USA and neither were called Ham.

EmmaC78 · 14/02/2020 23:44

I live in Scotland so like Hamish but wonder how it woukd sound being used elsewhere.

Samuel is lovely too.

Marcipex · 14/02/2020 23:37

I would expect Hamish to be called Ham.
Samuel is okay but v v boring.

Rory?
Jonathan?
Alastair?

Mlou32 · 14/02/2020 23:32

Is Hamish a common name outside of Scotland? I can't decide between the two OP, both great names!
