My husband is set on Luca for a boy however it's just not grabbing me. Perhaps it'll grow on me.
Are there any names you could suggest as an alternative?
I like
Elis if that helps.

Micah (my-cah). With lucas I think of mucus. I also love Luca BTW.

CormoranStrike · 09/02/2020 14:58

Merge Luca and Elis and have Lucas.

PlantPotting · 09/02/2020 14:53

Love the names Luca and Ellis

lynsey91 · 09/02/2020 14:39

I love the name Luca although I would spell it Luka. The Suzanne Vega song is "Luka".

I know that song is sad but I love it and have a dog called Luka after the song

MikeUniformMike · 09/02/2020 14:29

Elias is from the Hebrew.
Luca is too italian, but Luke and Lucas are nice.

PineappleDanish · 09/02/2020 14:09

Luca is very popular around here. There are three in my DS's year at school out of 57 kids. Lucas is just as nice, if not nicer. Or Luke.

Doppledoe · 09/02/2020 14:05

I mean Elis not Ellis as this is the spelling I am used to from part my Welsh heritage

Anyway I didn't expect the post to create controversy I was just curious if anyone had suggestions that are similar to Lucas

Ha ha x post with burntpinky Grin

troppibambini · 09/02/2020 12:40

I have a Luca so I'm biased. My family is Italian but I don't think it really matters it's much more mainstream now.

I also liked
Hugo
Gabriel
Bruno
Nico

My other boys names probably wouldn't appeal as they are much more Italian.

burntpinky · 09/02/2020 12:39

Don’t like Luca at all. Know two people who have used it in the last 6 months. Don’t get why people like it tbh.

Douberry · 09/02/2020 12:39

Ellis rather than Elis.

Agree with PP Luca reminds me too much of the Suzanne Vega song! I think it's also about domestic violence Confused

emilybrontescorsett · 09/02/2020 12:35

I love Luca and have only come across one in my entire life.
He was the doctor who attended my very sick baby. I almost changed ds's name to Luca but dh didn't want to ( we hadn't registered d's by this stage).

How about Lucas as a compromise ?

ritalove · 09/02/2020 12:30

If you or hubby are Italian and you want Luca then go for it! It's not a bad name.
My honest feeling about it is that Luca feels feminine and would be a bit odd if he's English without Italian ancestry. I can't work out if you mean Ellis or Eli? But I prefer both of these to Luca.

FloraGreysteel · 09/02/2020 12:27

Luca is nice but I wouldn't use that spelling of Ellis.

Grufallosfriends · 09/02/2020 12:25

I too think of Suzanne Vega's song!

I don't like Luca.

HisBetterHalf · 09/02/2020 12:17

Luca is a lovely name

Shmithecat2 · 09/02/2020 12:14

Luca always make me think of Suzanne Vega's song about an abused child, so it would be a No from me.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 09/02/2020 12:09

You misunderstand OP. There's nothing wrong with liking a name from another culture- but, to give you an example- in dd's Italian class there is an Italian child with an American popstar name. A name which in the US is perfectly usual. But which here sounds ridiculous.
I often see Italian names suggested on here also which are now considered so old fashioned that no Italian baby has been given that name for about 80 years- the equivalent of something like Enoch or Cedric if you see what I mean.
Nothing wrong with Enoch or Cedric either, except I think most people would be a bit "oh, that's a bit off the wall, wonder if they realise how Charles Dickens they sound"

That said, Luca is just mega trendy so you won't have that problem.

Doppledoe · 09/02/2020 12:04

Thanks all for making me feel better. It's ridiculous to think you have to be a specific heritage to have a specific name.

Love Elias - which is Greek I think.
Also love Thalia for a girl which is also Greek or Hebrew. I'm neither but it doesn't matter

I don't get the 'you can't call the child that if you don't have the heritage'. They're not pedigree dogs.

Most 'mainstream' names now have their roots far out of the UK. DS's is Hebrew in origin. We're not.

Astronica · 09/02/2020 11:52

Luca is okay. Quite popular now and it is used widely outside of Italian heritage. I prefer Lucas.
Lucius
Elias
Linus
Milo
Miles
Hugo
Micah

Whatsyourflava · 09/02/2020 11:52

No I agree @Doppledoe

I wouldn’t worry too much we all have our own opinions on things. Luca is pretty mainstream now and id put money on 95% of people choosing the name having no Italian roots. It obviously doesn’t bother them but it would bother others. You’ll never please everyone with a name choice anyway

20viona · 09/02/2020 11:50

Luca is lovely.

Doppledoe · 09/02/2020 11:49

Why is it weird to like a name if you don't have that heritage?
I find that a really odd thing to say Confused
So many names are not English, in fact I can't think of any name that solely is of one background.
Neither my husband or me are English but I don't think this is really relevant?

Flywheel · 09/02/2020 11:28

Agreed, Luca is pretty mainstream now. I don't think you need Italian heritage to use it. I like it, but like Ellis too so not much help
