Blue for a boy?

Philipippa · 08/02/2020 22:33

Hello,

I’m due a baby boy in the spring, my first child.

Dad isn’t on the scene so the name is all up to me, which would be great if I wasn’t so indecisive!

One I really really love but I’m not sure if it’s too out there is Blue... what do you think? Surname is something simple and very common, think Bones with a J. Does it work or does it clash too much?

Other names I like: River, Jude, Otis, Luca, Sky (is this seen as a girls name?), Bay, Flynn, Asher...

Any input would be great, I feel like I’m going round in circles with no one to bounce name ideas off. Thank you!

Red is much better.
Redford Bones

I love Blue, to me it represents the sky and dreams, clouds etc. But then when I think about it on a deeper level it does start to worry me that it’s gender-specific to a boy which I don’t like as I’m open to equality and fairness etc.

Congratulations on your pregnancy, OP.

@BobbyBlueCat What the hell does that even mean? Is being a single mum something to be ashamed of then?

I know loads of unusually named kids in two-parent families, and plenty of Olivers, Emilys, Thomases etc. in single-parent ones. Your comment makes you sound judgemental and quite honestly a bit of a snob.

I’ve got plenty of “proper” names on my list too, if you read the whole OP. I know Blue is unusual, that’s why I was asking opinions on it AND having done so I’ve now decided not to use it, as I said clearly above.

Blue reminds me of porn movies. Silly name.

Whatsyourflava · 11/02/2020 19:39

@BobbyBlueCat what a lovely message to send 🙄

BobbyBlueCat · 11/02/2020 19:38

It's ridiculous and you're slotting in to the 'single mum with 'unusual kids name' stereotype.

Just call the poor sod a decent PROPER name.

IckleBear · 11/02/2020 12:23

I like River and Otis, not Blue.

firstimemamma · 10/02/2020 17:10

Jude and Luca are my personal favourites from your list.

firstimemamma · 10/02/2020 17:08

I did a day of supply teaching once and there was a '[name beginning with b] blue' in the class - a 2 part first name. He looked so embarrassed when I was taking the register and had to get him to confirm whether it was just 'name beginning with b' or the name and blue as his first name (I obviously didn't want to spend the day getting his name wrong). He said it was 'name blue' during registration, then spoke with me a bit later one to one and basically begged me to just call him the first part of his name for the rest of the day. He was mortified that blue was part of his name poor kid. Just giving your child the name 'blue' doesn't offer your child any alternative like this child has. I'd never do it.

LochJessMonster · 10/02/2020 17:04

I like all of your other options, but not Blue.

I love the names River, Flynn and actually quite like Bay. Asher is nice too.

helpmum2003 · 10/02/2020 17:00

Not Blue. Or River or Bay.

Flynn, Jude, Otis or Luca are much better.

TerrifiedandWorried · 10/02/2020 16:54

Jeremiah Jones. I'd definitely want to hang out with him.

youareacuntychops · 10/02/2020 15:00

I think Jude is the nicest on your list.

Blue is just ridiculous

FizzyGreenWater · 10/02/2020 11:56

I'd say Winter is definitely a girls' name

You could also go super long with Jones, and have a cool nn.

e.g. Zephaniah Jones nn Zefi, Ezekiel Jones nn Zeke. That kind of thing.

thegreylady · 10/02/2020 11:56

I like Flynn and River best of your names, Asher and Quinn are nice too though Quinn is a bit too like quim for me.

Whynosnowyet · 10/02/2020 11:45

I know a Skye Blue (girl) with db River George..
And a dsis Star Rain

Philipippa · 10/02/2020 11:10

Thank you, I like Asa and Wolf. I think Blue is off the list Sad I don’t want any BJ comments.

I like Winter too, but my good friend has a little girl called Wynter so I can’t use it sadly.

Really no with that surname. BJ is bad enough but Blue Jones also just sounds too much like blue jeans. It's like a joke name, regardless of whether you like Blue or not!

Blue on its own - not my taste at all, but I would say it sounds feminine.

You have some other great, unusual, interesting strong names on the list - use those - this screams pregnancy hormones and you will regret it!

River is good, but not so keen with Jones somehow.

Otis Jones is fab

Jude Jones cool.

Other crazy/cool ones which I think would actually work with Jones:

Iggy Jones
Asa Jones
Wolf Jones

Whatsyourflava · 10/02/2020 10:21

Flynn is really cool too.

Whatsyourflava · 10/02/2020 10:21

River is a great choice @Philipippa

Don’t let people tell you it’s just a girls name as that’s rubbish. Why do people say these things without looking at the statistics first! It only takes a minute. The most recent official government stats we have for England and Wales in 2018 clearly show that more boys were called River than girls. It’s unisex. Plus River Phoenix has beeen in the papers a bit recently so I can see more boys using jt

hawaiianturtle · 10/02/2020 10:19

I think blue would be great as a middle name. Think Ramsay Blue or Elijah Blue etc x

Mamabear88 · 10/02/2020 09:44

Awful. Just no. Bay is also dreadful. Sky is a girls name. Not keen on River either, sorry. Flynn, Otis, Luca and Jude are all nice.

Lordfrontpaw · 10/02/2020 08:41

Little Blue was an elephant when I was a kid.

diddlediddle · 10/02/2020 08:38

River, Jude, Otis, Luca, Bay, Flynn, Asher are all nice names, and much better than Blue x

villamariavintrapp · 10/02/2020 07:36

BJ initials. Plus sounds like blew jones, like gave jones a blow job.. not great!
