Doing a separate thread on this one. What do you think?

Opel in Ireland too.

user1493494961 · 09/02/2020 12:07

I've also heard about the superstitions with regard to opals so wouldn't use it as a name. I think there are far nicer names anyway.

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 09/02/2020 11:59

Cars branded 'Opel' in the continent were branded 'Vauxhall' in the UK.

For the avoidance of doubt, I wouldn't use either for a baby.

MindyStClaire · 09/02/2020 09:05

Makes me think of the cars too, although that's spelled Opel I think.

PlantPotting · 09/02/2020 09:01

Pearl is gorgeous
Don’t like opal as much

Roselilly36 · 09/02/2020 06:26

I thought Opal meant tears, so I wouldn’t use it.

VanillaLatteAndCake · 09/02/2020 06:10

Really like it!
Looks like the sweets are making a limited comeback for about 10wks so that wouldn't affect my decision. I'd never heard of the car but after a quick Google, it looks like that's what Vauxhall is called in other countries.

mathanxiety · 09/02/2020 06:00

It's a hot name where I am (MC US suburb). Very old ladyish here.

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 09/02/2020 03:05

I like Opaline or I dont mind Opal for an October baby! I personally think it makes a pretty middle name and has it never really been on my mind as a first name.

I'm unfamiliar with whatever Opal fruits is so that doesn't bother me (but should it?). But something that sticks with me is I had someone tell me its unlucky to wear Opals if they aren't your birthstone! So I feel like is it unlucky to name a baby Opal unless born in October? I know that's very superstitious and silly but it's just what springs to my mind!

ladycarlotta · 08/02/2020 21:47

@mulkshake not gonna lie, I only know because I saw it in a Tintin book.

74NewStreet · 08/02/2020 18:06

Agree with everyone saying Pearl is far nicer.

mulkshake · 08/02/2020 18:04

@ladycarlotta - can't believe I never knew the car was spelled Opel rather than Opal. Every day's a school day

CassandrasCastle · 07/02/2020 13:48

@Whynosnowyet It was a spam link to some naughty pictures Shock Grin

Maybe somehow related to the name Opal though??? haha

I think it's lovely! Very pretty as a first name. The car is spelt Opel and I don't think sharing a name with a sweet will ruin her life. I'd say the stone is equally well known, no?

TheVanguardSix · 07/02/2020 10:34

Pearl is better, if you're going down this road.
Opal just doesn't have a nice sound. It's a nice meaning but the sound is a bit round and clumsy. Sorry. Sad
Ophelia?
Odine/Audina?

Whynosnowyet · 07/02/2020 10:31

Deleted message about a baby name??
Shock

CassandrasCastle · 06/02/2020 22:37

Tbh, I'm weirdly glad about Opal Fruits return - it'll help me narrow down my list 🙈

I live in France and know a couple of Opaline. I think it's nice.

Valkarie · 06/02/2020 19:38

I love it, was on my girl name list. I had boys.

Chocolatedaim · 06/02/2020 19:29

I prefer Pearl

FleetwoodMacMummy · 06/02/2020 19:23

I don't think I would be brave enough to use it as a first name but i do love it!

RuthW · 06/02/2020 19:18

I heard that Opal Fruits are coming back, so no, not a good idea.

Istillgetjealous · 06/02/2020 19:13

Not keen at all. Middle name material
