Hi,

I'm due in a little boy in March. We already have an Isaac (if that helps)

After going through what seems like hundreds of names we have finally agreed on these two.

Rowan
Jude

I really like both, so having trouble making a desicion.

Which do you prefer and why?

Thank you mums x

Jude.
I'm just not a fan of all the Rowans, Romans, Roans etc.

Mysocalledlifex · 06/02/2020 16:16

Rowan such a cute name , go with what u want maybe once u see your baby then u will know.

hotstepper4 · 06/02/2020 16:12

Jude, it just sounds better to me.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 06/02/2020 16:10

I think Isaac and Jude flows and reads better as a pair of brothers.

blossomberry · 06/02/2020 16:06

Jude

Grufallosfriends · 06/02/2020 16:06

I really don't like Jude. It sounds girly and is a nickname for Judith or Judy. It means Jew in German.

Rowan is a strong and internationally known name. I'd choose that. Rowan & Isaac are great together!

BobbyBlueCat · 06/02/2020 15:49

The only Rowans I have ever met are girls.

Jude is the nicer of the two (although the school I went to he would have been beaten up for having a girl's name being called that too! I appreciate that was the shit school and it's pupils though, nothing to do with his actual name.)

Spied · 06/02/2020 15:21

Love Jude.
When I saw thread title I just knew one name was going to be Rowan(yawn).
It'll date badly and it's just not to my taste.
Love Isaac

Dustarr73 · 06/02/2020 15:18

I prefer Jude,it flows better with Issac.

I think both are nice. But Jude sounds best with Isaac

I’m not overly mad on either name so sorry @Cuckoome 😬

I would say that Roman/Rowan/Rohan/Roan/ Ronan is a bit bland. There’s 2 Roman’s in my NCT group. Locally I seem to be noticing that RoMan is slowly becoming the masculine version of the name (maybe because of the subtle difference in sound “Ro-MAN”) and Rowan the female version (maybe because of the sound “Row-ANNE”, with Anne being feminine). Not sure.

So I probably would pick Jude of the two (or pick Roman with an M), as I wouldn’t want to risk my son to be in a class with a girl of the same name. Sorry I know that’s really un PC of me. Boys names on girls seem to be “cool” but girls names on boys are practically illegal. (And I know it’s a unisex name but the girl numbers are increasing so I could see it flipping... at least with names like Robyn/Robin there’s different spellings for boy and girl so more easily distinguished).

Jude is actually now on a downward trajectory whereas Roman/Rowan are climbing dramatically year on year, especially Roman. You can view this here if interested:

Jude is a girls name?! Always best to look at the statistics.

15 girls were called Jude in the UK last year compared to nearly 100 girls being called a Rowan! 7 times as many female Rowans.

Rowan is in the top 100 girls name lists in Scotland (and rapidly jumping up the charts there) but doesn’t feature in the top 100 boy name lists there.

Rowan is a unisex name. Jude is a boy name.

Lavenderblues · 06/02/2020 14:25

Definitely Rowan. Much more masculine and strong.

Jude sounds soft and feminine, often short for Judy. I really don't like it much.

PlantPotting · 06/02/2020 14:05

Gosh Judith! There’s a name you don’t hear anymore. Only 16 baby girls names Judith last year and 20 named Judy! It’s going extinct!

ParadiseLaundry · 06/02/2020 14:04

I love both names but slightly prefer Rowan.

SquigglePigs · 06/02/2020 14:04

I prefer Rowan. Think Jude sounds a bit harsh. Isaac is a lovely name.

Avocadosontoast · 06/02/2020 14:00

Rowan.

I don't like Jude at all. I know lots of female Judes and Judys, often short for Judith.

Jude doesn't travel well into other languages. In German it's pronounced Yoo deh and means Jew.

GaraMedouar · 06/02/2020 13:58

Jude - but then I can't say my r's so Rowan is out!

Disfordarkchocolate · 06/02/2020 13:55

I really like them both but I think Jude just edges it. How about Rowan Jude?

PlantPotting · 06/02/2020 13:54

Jude is a good strong choice.
My baby daughter is called Rowan so obviously I like the name but it is a bit annoying there’s 2 Roman’s at the small local nursery, so shes “Rowan with a W”. Wouldn’t have chosen it if I’d realised how popular Roman is becoming. A couple of years ago no one was called Roman and now it’s the name that’s jumped the most in the top 100! Obviously a trendy name having its moment 🙈

mistermagpie · 06/02/2020 13:54

Judes are ten a penny round here but I've never met a Rowan. Is it Row as in 'row your boat' or Row and in to rhyme with how?

74NewStreet · 06/02/2020 13:52

Yes, Rowan is primarily used for girls these days. Then again; Jude would have been considered a girls name not too long ago.

GroggyLegs · 06/02/2020 13:48

Jude.

Rowan is nice, but to me it's a girls name.
