Is my daughters name awful?

Queeenie · 05/02/2020 11:05

I have a DD (no longer a baby) who is called Keira. I have seen threads about “K” apparently being chavvy and also threads discussing the spelling of this name.

I specifically chose this spelling for 2 reasons. 1 - I’m Scottish and it’s the feminine form of the boys name Keir. 2 - because although there are alternative spellings (Ciara and Kiera), this is the most commonly used spelling.

After reading the other threads, I just worry I’ve made a bad choice with this and that my daughter may some day be unhappy with her name.

Have I made a big mistake?

I am a fan of traditional names and I lovd it. I know a kira and always liked the name.

Dairymilkmuncher · 05/02/2020 12:42

LOVE that name I think it's my favourite girls name too (I never got a girl)

Never heard of a chavvy Keira either not that that should matter

Logfootlightoe · 05/02/2020 12:41

I love the name, but I would spell it Ciara as I'm Irish. You've spelt it your way so ignore everyone! I've been told one of my DC's is 'boring' - named after a beloved relative and an old family name. And one DC's is spelt 'wrong' - it isn't.
Ignore, ignore, ignore!

Drabarni · 05/02/2020 12:40

Why would people think your daughter was a Romany child (chavvy) are you of that race.

No, there's nothing wrong with your dd name, it's pretty.

Beautiful3 · 05/02/2020 12:40

It's not chavy at all. It's nice.

NoNoAndDefinateNo · 05/02/2020 12:39

Regarding Keira Knightley - Her name is a misspelling.

She was meant to be named "Kiera", the anglicized form of "Kira", after Kira Ivanova, whom her father admired. However, Macdonald misspelled the name when she went to register her daughter, writing the "e" before the "i"

ScrimshawTheSecond · 05/02/2020 12:38

It's a good name.

SonjaMorgan · 05/02/2020 12:35

I was obsessed with the dark crystal growing up and it makes me think of Kira from it. Not that this is a bad thing. Sod what anyone else thinks.

DonKeyshot · 05/02/2020 12:30

Another vote for lovely name. It suits an infant as well as an adult and all the years in between and imo it's not a all chavy.

Don't get me started on those who give their dc surnames as christian names and who would want to be called Apple, Raddix (radish). or Sunday, especially when Rose is tacked onto the latter giving rise to 'Sunday Roast'.

fuckoffImcounting · 05/02/2020 12:28

Its a nice name, and even a bit posh.

waterbottle12 · 05/02/2020 12:27

It's fine. Archers listeners will always think of Emma Grundy's daughter but you can get that sort of thing with any name!

Shinycat · 05/02/2020 12:25

On a game show the other day, someone laughed at a contestant who gave the answer DAVE to the question 'what Nobel prize winner.....?' (Because obviously the name DAVE is soooo low-class and 'common!') Hmm

Yet there are plenty of middle-class and well educated DAVEs! David Attenborough, David Cameron, David Bellamy, David Frost, David Milliband, David Lloyd-George, David Steele, David Owen, David Johnstone etc etc etc.......

And there are plenty of other famous and successful Daves who are singers/ actors/ sportsmen/ directors.... like Bowie, Cassidy, Fincher, Coverdale, Essex, Tennant, Gower, Schwimmer, Duchovny, Cronenberg, Hasselhoff, Beckham... the list goes on........

The snobbery around forenames is pathetic tbh.

JRUIN · 05/02/2020 12:24

I think it's a lovely name, and who the fuck decides if something's chavvy or not anyway. You like the name and that's all that matters surely.

Batmanandrobin123 · 05/02/2020 12:23

I love the name Keira. We are having our DS soon and deciding between Kieran and Keelan. I know mumsnet has a thing about K names but I'm not letting that put me off.

YouokHun · 05/02/2020 12:21

I loathe the “chav” word and the way smug people brand others and their choices with it. Keira is a fine name and if you like it that really is all that matters. The spotlight needs to be turned on the petty snobs who judge people by the name they were given.

Riddleofthesands · 05/02/2020 12:19

I like it, I know 2 (one spelt the Irish way with a C who I was at school with a million years ago and one spelt with a K who is a teenager) and both were/are particularly great girls so I have good associations with the name. I don’t think it’s in the least bit chavy.

If you really are worried you can always start trying out her middle name. But honestly I think you are over thinking things, I would encourage your DD to love her name and be proud of your heritage. In my experience children love to know the story behind how you picked their name so I would build on that.

DobbyLovesSocks · 05/02/2020 12:17

It's a lovely name OP - not at all chavvy
My DS has a 'K' name, similar to your DD's and I am often asked how I spell it (I often have to refrain from rolling my eyes and saying 'correctly').

I saw a report today that said children named Oliver and Chloe are often ill-behaved. That's because lots of children have these names as they were the most popular names - bit like saying those with the surnames 'Jones' and 'Smith' are more likely to mis-behave [hmmm]

Stephminx · 05/02/2020 12:17

I suspect it’s due to all the kardashians people have said this ?

K names are fine. There’s nothing odd, embarrassing etc about your choice !

Londonsuffolkmummy · 05/02/2020 12:14

It’s my name and not at all chavvy mine is spelt keirah

BillieEilish · 05/02/2020 12:14

I love it Smile

Bluerussian · 05/02/2020 12:13

It's a lovely name.

'Keira is a feminine given name. It is an Anglicized version of "Ciara" and means "dark haired" in Irish Gaelic. People named Keira include: Saint Cera of Ireland, also spelled Keira, 7th-century abbess. Keira Knightley (born 1985), English actress.
Word/name: Gaelic
Related names: Kira, Ciara (given name)'

Nothing wrong with names beginning with K - unless you have a child you've named Krystal rather than Crystal.

leadbetter5 · 05/02/2020 12:12

It's only chavvy if you are!

HumousWhereTheHeartIs · 05/02/2020 12:10

Not chavvy at all. I'm Scottish and know a Keira. Keira Knightley's mum in Scottish too

LadyMadderRose · 05/02/2020 12:10

I like it, and I like the Scottish/Keir connection too. Not awful at all!

Elderflower14 · 05/02/2020 12:09

I love the name. I look after a little girl with the same name. My ds2 has an unusualish name. The year he was born only 14 other boys were born with the same name.
When I rang my mum from the delivery room to tell her, there was a terrible silence to the point I thought we had been cut off. There was some stuttering and she said she would have to get used to his name. I replied very firmly that yes she would and 23 years on she loves it and it's the 120 something most popular boys name!
