Is my daughters name awful?

Queeenie · 05/02/2020 11:05

I have a DD (no longer a baby) who is called Keira. I have seen threads about “K” apparently being chavvy and also threads discussing the spelling of this name.

I specifically chose this spelling for 2 reasons. 1 - I’m Scottish and it’s the feminine form of the boys name Keir. 2 - because although there are alternative spellings (Ciara and Kiera), this is the most commonly used spelling.

After reading the other threads, I just worry I’ve made a bad choice with this and that my daughter may some day be unhappy with her name.

Have I made a big mistake?

Think the spelling Ciara does look a touch classier, but it is a pretty sounding name.

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 09/02/2020 15:45

I love Keira! Very stunning!!

And I love the spelling you chose because unfortunately people now think Ciara is Sierra? (Due to the famous singer who pronounces it as such). So I love Keira. Also Keira Knightly is a total doll so not a bad namesake. I love it!

FloreanFortescue · 09/02/2020 14:25

It's a perfectly good name! I'm a teacher and I've taught a handful of Keiras over the years and I wouldn't consider it a chavvy name at all.

GameofPhones · 09/02/2020 14:04

I think people often assume that 'new' names are made up, therefore chavvy. But often they are old names in reality, so the negativity is based on ignorance, it would be a shame to be guided by people who are ignorant. And even 'made up' names can be pretty.

I thought you were going to say it was Lacee-Mae or something. Keira’s lovely.

Newtonpass · 09/02/2020 13:53

I love it! I couldn't use it for dd because my sister had called her staffy Keira but I would have if I could.

The kind of awful people that would sneer at her name would always find some other reason to sneer (her clothes, her face, her partner, her car, her shoes, her holiday choices...well the list of pointless snobbery goes on forever) so don't give those types another thought.

Abraid2 · 09/02/2020 13:49

I have an Aussie cousin called Keira and she’s not at all chavvy. Pretty too.

carly2803 · 09/02/2020 13:47

i really like it!

DearGod1 · 09/02/2020 13:15

It's lovely OP.

Celticdawn5 · 09/02/2020 08:23

It’s a fine name. I’ve never heard of ‘K’ being ‘chavvy’.

Thislittlepiggywentto · 09/02/2020 08:16

It's nice. I'm sure it got popular for a while. It's not offensive though ar all.

jimmyjab · 07/02/2020 13:45

It's my nieces name too! I love it, although I do call her kiki instead which I also love.

A positive vote from me. Good strong name with no negatives I can think of. Neither old fashioned nor out there.

AlpacaGoodnight · 07/02/2020 12:43

I've always liked it, only know a few but they are all lovely!

Buttercup54321 · 06/02/2020 23:44

Very pretty name.

Urkiddingright · 06/02/2020 13:23

It’s not my personal style but I don’t think it’s chavvy, it just makes me think of Keira Knightley and she definitely is not a chav!

Astronica · 05/02/2020 23:23

I love Keira. I'm surprised that you've seen negative reactions. You can really hold your head up with this one, I think. K beginning names are lovely and among my favourites: Katharine, Kate, Kirsten, Kit, Kerensa, Keturah. Keira is so strong, elegant and evocative (and much preferred by me) amongst a crowd of Lilas, Leilas, Lilys, Islas, Ellas, Ellies, Avas, Evies etc. And Keira Knightly is gorgeous and a favourite actor of mine so a great model of the name there.

schnubbins · 05/02/2020 19:54

I love it!

Poorolddaddypig · 05/02/2020 19:52

BrandySours · 05/02/2020 19:32

Mollie3 · 05/02/2020 19:31

You obviously thought carefully about it before naming her that
It’s fine! There are worse names and I’m sure she’ll grow into it
Better than many names

Ashsummer · 05/02/2020 19:20

I think it's a gorgeous name. Strong and feminine.
It's a smart sounding name.
I love Keira knightly too.
Definitely on our list x
