Lachlan- thoughts?

Both me and DH quite like the name Lachlan, and it goes nicely with our tricky surname. Do you think it's a strange move if we aren't Scottish or Irish? My grandfather was Irish but that's as much as we have got!

“Our pronounciation would be Lock-lan“

But it’s a ch sound... if you can’t pronounce it then why would you use it?

DesLynamsMoustache · 04/02/2020 17:01

Yeah, I've usually heard it pronounced with a hard 'ck' by people unable to do the good, back of throat 'ch' sound that is Scottish people (and Germans!) do, so they say 'lock' instead of 'loch' too. But perhaps the Irish pronunciation is a with a hard 'ck'. Certainly up here, you would never say Lack/Lock-lan.

happycamper11 · 04/02/2020 16:55

as in cough.. but not really. There is no phonetic way I can think to write the Scottish pronunciation of the soft 'ch' youjist have to have heard it lol

If you are pronouncing it lock- lan then you need to spell it Lochlan (although it's actually pronounced more like lough- lan)

But is that “lough” as in cough, tough, though or through? Wink

Naomh · 04/02/2020 04:27

Not if you can’t pronounce the soft ‘ch’ like ‘loch’, not ‘lock’. Lorcan or Declan might be safer.

El2020 · 04/02/2020 04:21

That spelling is really common in Australia and a top listed name! I like it but wouldn’t use it myself!

momtoboys · 03/02/2020 19:04

Love it. Also love Declan. Wanted one of my boys to be a Declan but was vetoed by DH.

clpsmum · 03/02/2020 16:26

@Urkiddingright wonder if you're my friend, my lauchlan is 9!

My lauchlan is constantly called Lachlan if you want it pronounced lauchlan I would definitely think about spelling. We are in Scotland

Astronica · 03/02/2020 12:49

Good name and stick with Lachlan spelling. It's quite a popular name and none of the Lachlans I know are Scottish or Irish. I've only ever heard it pronounced Lok-luhn no matter what spelling.

Urkiddingright · 03/02/2020 10:58

I like it. Have a friend with a 9 year old Lachlan, lovely name.

Cohle · 02/02/2020 22:56

I'm Scottish and would definitely assume "Lachlan" was pronounced with an "a" sound to begin rather than as "lock-lan".

That said the "ch" sound is as in "loch" rather than being a harsh "ck" sound.

clpsmum · 02/02/2020 22:42

I have a lauchlan lots of people comment on his name and like it xx

WellHolyGodMiley · 02/02/2020 22:28

Lox is a terrible nn

WellHolyGodMiley · 02/02/2020 22:27

I prefer Lorcan. I'm Irish not Scottish though. I don't like Lochlan / Lachlan. It doesn't roll off the tongue.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 02/02/2020 22:24

a character on Neighbours was called Lochlan.

twitchwitch · 02/02/2020 22:18

Love it! I know a Lachlan (he's pronounced Locklan too) & he gets called Lochie or Lox.

DramaAlpaca · 02/02/2020 21:53

Nice name.

ElsieDear · 02/02/2020 21:05

We know a little boy in Oz with this name. They shorten it to Lochie and I love it!

happycamper11 · 02/02/2020 20:55

I'm in Scotland and know a few lachlans it's definitely pronounced with the first 'a' but it's quite soft. As I said it's shortened to lachy (pronounced lacky but it's softer that's it reads when said in a Scottish accent)

LizzieAnt · 02/02/2020 20:40

The version I've mostly come across in Ireland is Lochlann, pronounced Lucklan (with the Luck part to rhyme with duck). Means Viking. Lachlan is pronounced Locklan here I think. Well, nearly....the ch in gaelic isn't exactly pronounced like k. You can check out forvo for pronunciations too. Gorgeous name and I don't think you need to be Irish or Scottish to use it at all.

Slomi · 02/02/2020 18:15

Where I live, both Lochlan and Lachlan are pronounced "Lock-lan", I've never heard it pronounced "Lack-lan" before (I'm in Ireland though, perhaps in the UK it gets pronounced phonetically).

happycamper11 · 02/02/2020 18:00

If you are pronouncing it lock- lan then you need to spell it Lochlan (although it's actually pronounced more like lough- lan)

Lachlan is pronounced with A sound and is usually shortened to 'Lacky' where as Lochlan's tend to be known as locky

Wintersun13 · 02/02/2020 17:55

I like it. Like Lachlan better.

Declan is also a good name.

SunbeamsOverhead · 02/02/2020 17:50

Love

dumbledoresAhhhmy · 02/02/2020 17:48

I think I prefer the Lochlan spelling too, actually. Our pronounciation would be Lock-lan
