Thoughts on this name? DH is Welsh and I love that it's a Welsh name, and just generally really like it, but DH says he can't think of anything but Idris Elba (although he does really like the name) 😕 It's hard to know how much that matters when naming a newborn baby (Idris Elba will be 48 when the baby's born - by the time the baby's an adult will he even know who he is?)... but DH seems to think it's a big problem and everyone will comment on it every time we/he says his name. Thoughts?

Idris is beautiful and perfect for a Welsh child I think.

Love it!

@PlantPotting that's a great comparison, thanks! I've just shared that thought with DH!

There were 248 babies named Idris in 2018 .
It’s used enough now that there will be hundreds of little Idris’ around the country. People won’t just be thinking of Elba.

I can imagine people having the same worries about the name Jude (Law) or Isla (Fisher) 10-20 years ago. Names are totally mainstream now and same is happening with Idris

I think there are far nicer Welsh names, I also think of an old farmer.

Blackcatpaws · 02/02/2020 10:19

Love it

Bril name. Interesting that it’s also from other cultures too. DS has a Muslim mate called idris.

PlantPotting · 02/02/2020 09:00

Yeh cool name. I wouldn’t worry about the Elba connection - who cares plus it’s a good association anyway plus the name is getting more mainstream no one is going to think the parent is a huge fan or something

Elba Blush

mumcop · 02/02/2020 08:55

Yep all I hear is Edla but I still love the name.

Redwinestillfine · 02/02/2020 08:48

Love it. We would have used it ( but knew someone who had an Idris and didn't want to copy!)

BadTimesAtTheElRoyale · 02/02/2020 08:46

I don't think of Idris Elba but do picture an old farmer for some reason. It could be due a come back though, it is a nice name and easy for non Welsh people to pronounce.
