Just that really :) 32 weeks and struggling! Middle name will be Andrew.

You’d really subject your child to being called Frederick in 2022?

Yes

Why name him Frederick if you intend on calling him Freddie?

I'd let him decide what if any nicknames he prefers. I'm not keen on Freddie personally

autumnkate · 20/03/2022 17:35

People will still shorten Freddie to Fred, OP.

But I MUCH prefer Freddie to Reggie.

Lolamoon123 · 20/03/2022 17:27

You’d really subject your child to being called Frederick in 2022? School would have to call him his full name, not a nickname. So he would be Frederick in the classroom and all though school. Why name him Frederick if you intend on calling him Freddie? I just don’t understand it. In 30-40 years time all the little Freddie’s and reggies will be grown up and have their own businesses etc etc.. it’s just like I personally can’t imagine a baby Debbie or a baby Angela or a baby Karen, but 50 years ago there was plenty of them being born.
Names grow with generations!!

Lilaclavenders · 20/03/2022 15:44

I would! Frederick is a great classic name that exists in many languages - it's actually quite popular in Germany.

Lolamoon123 · 20/03/2022 14:39

Seriously.. who is honestly going to call their child Frederick in 2022? 🙈

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/03/2022 21:48

Not Reggie. Makes me think of the Krays and will be a naughty boys name in no time, mark my words Grin

So Freddie I guess, although prefer as short for Alfred or Frederick.

WaitinginVain · 19/03/2022 21:00

I don't personally like all the names ending in "ie" but would definitely prefer Reggie to Freddie.

That said, I wouldn't be putting Frederick on the birth certificate if I wanted Freddie and they're fine as stand alone names if you like them.

Orphlids · 19/03/2022 20:26

Of the two, Freddie is much better. There are lots of Reggies round here, and they all have mothers who look like they’d smash a beer glass over your head for looking at them wrong.

Nosetickle · 19/03/2022 17:59

Freddie for sure. It will probably be shortened to Fred when he wants a more grown up sounding name though so make sure you like Fred.

DoWhatYouLike · 19/03/2022 17:51

Reggie Kray
Freddie Mercury

No, both names are horrible

Lilaclavenders · 19/03/2022 17:21

In 30 years, all the high flying managers and CEO’s will be Freddie’s, albies, reggies, Milly, Tilly, Rosie

I bet they'd prefer to have the option to introduce themselves as Frederick, Albert, Matilda etc?!

Lilaclavenders · 19/03/2022 17:19

Why can’t Freddie or reggie just be a stand alone name?

Because they sound childish, look incomplete and don't travel well into other languages.

Frederick is a great name that sounds good in other languages too.

Lolamoon123 · 19/03/2022 15:07

Amen to this! Mumsnet users are OBSESSED with the line… ‘put Matilda on the birth certificate, nickname Tilly’ or ‘Put Reginald on the birth certificate, nickname Reggie’ they are obsessed with putting full names on the birth certificate! Ha

Lolamoon123 · 19/03/2022 15:04

What is mumsnet obsession with putting the full name on the birth certificate?!?

Why can’t Freddie or reggie just be a stand alone name?

In 30 years, all the high flying managers and CEO’s will be Freddie’s, albies, reggies, Milly, Tilly, Rosie etc because those names are all in at the moment and popular!

Buggedandconfused · 29/01/2020 07:45

I don’t like either, but I do like Stanley! Stan 🥰

sel2223 · 29/01/2020 07:43

@Rachel345 well I'm still in touch with them both on Facebook and they still go by Benji and Nicky now (That's why they popped into my head as examples)...They haven't even shortened them to Ben or Nick so I guess they're pretty happy with the names they were given!

CallofDoodee · 28/01/2020 18:01

They are both very 'UnMumsnetty' names Smile

I don't particularly like either of them, but if I had to choose would go for Freddie. I just always think those sorts of names are a bit, I don't know, unimaginative I guess.

NameChange30 · 28/01/2020 17:58

Tom and Sam are fine
Tommy and Sammy, on the birth certificate? Not so much.

@sel2223 thank you and I agree. I work with 2 brothers Tom and Sam and Tom and Sam is their names on their birth certificate and they're early 20s now. I appreciate everyone has an opinion on her ladies but if you're just going to slag the names off I've chosen then no need to comment. The thread isn't named 'do you like my name choices' it was simply to get options on the 2 names I've chosen so far. I don't believe they're cutsy, pet or chavy names. If I wanted a pet name I would have named him after my dog..... As you can see from my user name I shorten Jessica because I prefer jess, and my ds can use fred or reg if he prefers

OP posts:
Rachel345 · 28/01/2020 14:42

Btw I prefer Freddie over Reggie, but would definitely use Frederick as a full name.

Rachel345 · 28/01/2020 14:29

I went to school with a Benji and a Nicky 20+ years ago and those were their full names

I wonder whether they would now not appreciate the opportunity to call themselves Nicola or Benjamin or Benedict? I feel that it gives people more options- why take these away from birth?

Whatsyourflava · 28/01/2020 14:18

@sel2223 🙌🙌🙌

sel2223 · 28/01/2020 14:14

But it's not about you, it's about giving your child the option to use his full name

It's also not about you and the OP has stated repeatedly over the course of this thread that it will be Freddie or Reggie, not the longer versions as she doesn't like those. She was only asking about opinions on which one of the two not a while debate lol.

As for giving a child the option to use their full name, Freddie or Reggie will be their full name, that's the point, and they can shorten to fred or reg if they prefer when they're older.

By the way, I went to school with a Benji and a Nicky 20+ years ago and those were their full names, not Benjamin or Nicholas so it's not even a new thing.

BobbyBlueCat · 28/01/2020 14:13

They're both awful and are nicknames/diminutives of full names.
They both sound quite chavvy to me and I just picture very misbehaved little boys, dressed in flat caps, tweed and braces.

But if I had a gun to my head, Freddie.
