Saw a thread the other day and someone mentioned Hecate! I love it but could never saddle a child with it. We played very safe with our name choices but if I was to throw caution to the wind, we would have some very out there names

@TeaAddict235 That's doesn't really describe the Yannick I know. But he is only 7 so it would be odd if it did.

My son is Atticus, it was a brave decision 11yrs ago, but not had any negative comments, only positive. I love it even now!

It doesn't matter if the name is from another culture, a beautiful name is a beautiful name. My name is an African name and I'm not from there, but my mum had read up during her sociology degree back in the day and had fallen in love with the name. My dad was away in the army and had no choice plus my name won me an interview once as the interviewer just had to meet the lady with the name from her husband's culture!

@WooMaWang Yannick is gorgeous!!! I imagine a handsome lovely young man, with the charisma & intelligence of Obama, and with the outdoor skills of Bear Grylls

Ah, I could have had an Amarachi and a Yannick. Absolutely beautiful names.

That would have been VERY brave!

Some of the Old English names are great - Hereward was actually on our list.

I know someone who knows a Mercutio.

Frankly, if you like a name and it won't foul up the child's life (or school career), just go for it.

^There was an Isis in my NCT group.
At the time I thought what a pretty name it was.^

When I was expecting DD 8.5 years ago, I really wanted to call her Isis. Fortunately for her DH is more politically aware than me, and her she is called something completely different.

I've always loved the name Rett for a boy but wouldn't use it.

I’ve always loved Persephone for a girl, I see that’s come up a few times!

I also love Magnus for a boy but not brave enough for either! (If I was Scandinavian I would definitely use it though!)

She would be 17 now. I often wonder if she changed her name.
Her brother had a fab name that I would have stolen if we had another boy, but better not put it here as the 2 together would be identifiable.

I also knew a family with 3 kids. 2 boys with veyr ordinary names (think James and George) and then a daughter called Hermione. So unusual, so pretty. She would ahve been about 3 when harry Potter was published

@EugeniaGrace my DH is the same. He’s set on top 100 names and nothing outside of that! I managed to get him to number 70ish in the charts but any further down than that is too unusual for his tastes

Dh liked girls names in the top 100 and vetoed anything outside of this, except surprisingly, dd1’s middlename which he liked because it was the name of BB King’s guitar.

Boys names, again he wanted to name after football players or musicians, Hugo and Miles were two we agreed on but we had daughters in the end.

She is a very nice ordinary lady in her 80s and I think she has spent her whole life feeling sadled with a unusual name which she had to explain all the time.
