We are due our first baby in June and cannot agree on names at all. We don’t know whether baby is a boy or a girl. Part of the problem is that neither is us have any names that we really like.

Our surname is Evan which is tricky as some names end up sounding a bit odd. I would love to hear what you would call a baby with our surname.

I like Sophie, Rosie, Ruby... girls names with an e sound at the end, Maisie, Daisy, Poppy...

For a boy, Alex, Harry, Lucas... two syllables work well.

Orlando, Jasper, Gabriel

Violet, Iris, Imogen, Rosalind

I think it sounds better ending with a consonant.

Jessica, Winona, Alexander. Honestly though in my experience choosing a name is a nightmare whatever your surname. Also don't feel like you have to have it set in stone before they've arrived.

NeedAnExpert · 24/01/2020 23:44

Could you and DH change your names to whichever name got dropped?

dubmumof2 · 24/01/2020 23:43

I think that a vowel sound at the end of the first name doesn't work well. I find it a little difficult to say with Evan. The 'ee' sound is about the best of the vowel sounds because it's quite defined....

I also like the 3 syllable names with Evan. But some of the two syllable names not ending in a vowel sound also seem to match well e.g.

Susan Evan
Jacob Evan

Gulsink · 24/01/2020 23:41

Actually, Ellen works better.

I also agree that a longer first name sounds better.
All I would have suggested have already been mentioned so I won't repeat them. I can empathise though. We have a weird surname (well it's DH's, I stuck with mine) and lots of names I love in their own right sound really stupid with the surname. We actually didn't agree on any names until after our babies were born, largely because of that. But once they were here, all their names came easily. So don't stress too much if you don't have a name in advance.

I Ilene Elizabeth and Charlotte but they are my niece’s names.

thrree · 24/01/2020 23:29

I think you need a longer name. Elizabeth, Charlotte, Arabella. What style name do you like.

Bensmum1982 · 24/01/2020 23:29

Haha. Dworky. Smile my df’s very helpful suggestion was Ellen. Hmm

I like Eli and Micah also Daniel and James.
I like Sebastian too but can’t use it.

Girls names that I quite like but can’t use include Juniper, Rose and Isolde. Mainly our because they sound wrong in our accent.
But none are just right. Sorry,
I did say that I was fussy.
