I've been told name choices are unkind to DD on the way

We are expecting a sister for our DD Annie Coco.
We've had a little opposition to our favourite names for this one, but then none of my close relatives liked DD's name either but it gets a lot of compliments now and suits her down to the ground.

Would love thoughts on our current shortlist...

Ottilie (Would love to name her Ottilie Tiger and her pet name would be Tilly Tiger but I've been told this is cruel?)
Clementine
Sunny (would want to use Clementine as middle name for this)
Clover
Juniper (we just love the nn Junie)
Indigo (we love the nn Indie)
Mollie
Maggie

Love Clem.

MitziK · 24/01/2020 23:03

Sunny? Sounds just like Sonny Boy.

Indigo. Possibly suitable if you live in a yurt and sage smudge your babies to prevent Diptheria and Measles. She'll just as likely change her name to something like Elizabeth or Sheila just to piss you off, though.

If you like Tilly, you could go for Matilda and only have 2 of them in each class, rather than be one of the 5 - 8 Ottilies.

Tiger is likely to be changed into Tigger or Tiggy. Not bad if you're planning on her becoming a Nanny to the Royal Family, I suppose. Or a hedgehog.

Clover is a brand of margarine. so she could be called Marge.

Margaret/Marguerite/a gets you that as well, along with Mags, Maggie, Moggie, Meg, Peg and Madge.

Clementine. Calling the register in a couple of years is going to sound like a shopping list.

Juniper. Yeah, more shopping - it's the essential ingredient in gin. If she's due in five months, you might just slip into being able to call her Junie without people saying 'but she was born in April/May'. But she'll be constantly saying 'No, not Julie. Ju-nee'.

Mollie. Fine. I always liked Millie Molly Mandy books when I was little. Even though even that kid had the full name Millicent Margaret Amanda.

lilgreen · 24/01/2020 23:02

No cruelty that I can see. Nice names.

Serin · 24/01/2020 23:02

Ottilie is lovely.
All the Sunny's I have met are Muslim boys.
Clementine, sorry, I think it's awful.
Maggie great
India fine
Juniper and Clover are cat names.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 24/01/2020 23:01

Lovely names.

Someone will always find a reason to disparage your names, I wouldn't pay too much attention.

TigerOnATrain · 24/01/2020 23:00

@MousematsRule Listen to your family. Mollie is the only decent name for a baby girl out of all those names.

Sorry, but to an extent, other peoples opinions ARE relevant when naming your baby. And they always WILL be.

AND... Your child will never forgive you if you give her a daft/ludicrous name.

I know 3 or 4 young people (under 27) who were given daft names by their parents, and they ALL use a different name. One young woman (aged 28,) is called 'Fragrance Glitter.' I shit U not.

She started calling herself Lizzie, (after her grandmother,) when she started secondary school. Hasn't been known by her Godawful given name since she was 11.

BellaVida · 24/01/2020 23:00

Ottilie is a lovely name but Tilly Tiger is about too out there- just a bit twee and cartoon like.

What about something more similar to Coco for a middle name?

  • Ottilie Carmen
  • Ottilie Lola
  • Ottilie Fleur
  • Ottilie Amber
Pepperama · 24/01/2020 22:59

I honestly wouldn't want to introduce myself to new colleagues with most of these names. Just imagine.... Hello, I'm the new accounts manager, Clover Miller or hi, I'm the new junior doctor, Juniper Smith.

Yestermost · 24/01/2020 22:59

I have a weird name and like it but would have hated my parents for lumbering me with Sunny/Clementine/Tiger. The rest are great.

MousematsRule · 24/01/2020 22:57

OK so Ottilie Tiger can be safely ruled out! I would call her Tilly Tiger myself at home though! It was oy ever meant as a pet name anyway.

Had no idea Sunny Clementine was a cocktail so we can cross that one off.

I think our shortlisted shortlist probably looks like
Ottilie, Clementine, Clover, Maggie, Mollie, Indigo, Juniper

Middle names being thought

Thanks for the feedback whether it was kind, constructive or brutal! Grin

Ottilie (Would love to name her Ottilie Tiger and her pet name would be Tilly Tiger but I've been told this is cruel?) - so, so bad. Ottilie is a bit trendy but with flippin Tiger as a mn? No
Clementine - lovely
Sunny (would want to use Clementine as middle name for this) - boys name
Clover - nice
Juniper (we just love the nn Junie) - nice
Indigo (we love the nn Indie) - too masculine
Mollie - spell Molly
Maggie - harsh and old fashioned

Thestrangestthing · 24/01/2020 22:51

What you need to do it sit and think about your names and think how they will sound when your child is an adult.

MousematsRule · 24/01/2020 22:51

Have the confidence to Choose the name you like and stop telling people before the birth fgs

Close family ask and it seems a bit petty to refuse to discuss it. Plus, this is a forum designed to discuss ideas before the birth fgs

I think Ottilie, Clementine, Juniper and Indigo are lovely.

MsTSwift · 24/01/2020 22:50

In 11 years of having a clementine not once has the song come up. It’s not exactly current is it?! Dates from 1901

MrsAgassi · 24/01/2020 22:50

I don't like Indigo although I know it has been relatively popular for the last few years.

Clover - butter/cow

Clementine I like but the rhyming names that go with it would turn me off.

Love Ottilie, but think adding the Tiger turns to from a beautiful name into a gimmicky name.

I prefer your intended nn of Junie to Juniper which I really don't like. Have you considered Junie as her actual name rather than nn?

Grumpelstilskin · 24/01/2020 22:50

Good grief! I feel so sorry for the poor child! I thought the OP was taking the piss but it seems it is for real... Shock

PrincessHoneysuckle · 24/01/2020 22:48

Annie and Clover sound lovely together

misspiggy19 · 24/01/2020 22:46

Ottilie (Would love to name her Ottilie Tiger and her pet name would be Tilly Tiger but I've been told this is cruel?)- Tilly Tiger sounds like a 5 year olds stuffed toy
Clementine- nope. Might as well call the baby satsuma
Sunny- boys name and not a nice one at that
Clover- brand of margarine
Juniper- okay
Indigo- okay
Mollie- nice
Maggie- nice

BobbyBlueCat · 24/01/2020 22:45

Ottilie - Lovely. Drop the Tiger middle name though. Just call her Tilly Tiger as a nickname if you want.
Clementine - Lovely.
Sunny (would want to use Clementine as middle name for this) - Horrid. Utterly horrid.
Clover - Lovely.
Juniper (we just love the nn Junie) - Lovely.
Indigo (we love the nn Indie) - Nice.
Mollie - Awful spelling.
Maggie - That's an abbreviation / nickname. And a frumpy one at that.

Musmerian · 24/01/2020 22:45

Clover is the sister’s name in the Katy books and is lovely imo.

blue25 · 24/01/2020 22:44

Sunny Clementine?? Really not appropriate for a child’s name.

BoomBoomsCousin · 24/01/2020 22:43

I would only say about Mollie and Maggie that they are a bit informal and nicknamey form the get-go and a longer version with your original as their nickname might be more flexible as they age.

I wouldn't listen to people saying you are being cruel. It sued to be that people were scared of standing out at all but culturally that has completely changed and kids tend to prefer original names to having to end up being Jane M or the like all the time.

My only advice with unusual names is to check how easy it is for people to guess the spelling - I didn't do that with my DDs'. Even though their names are neither particularly common nor particularly original, it turns out we unthinkingly chose spellings for their nicknames that people often get wrong (think Emilie as a contraction of Emmeline - though not that). It annoys the heck out of them that people get it wrong so often and they can rarely find the right spelling on tourist-tat keyrings etc. Cue big disappointment (though less tourist tat!).

KillingEvenings · 24/01/2020 22:42

Love most of these - just not indigo. India with Indie would be nice though. And I know people with each of these names (except Indigo and Molly with that spelling)

MrsBertBibby · 24/01/2020 22:38

Sunny is ridiculous.
Indigo is a men's clothing line. From M&S. She will soon be 14. Imagine.

The rest are very much not my cup of tea but they are fine.
