I've been told name choices are unkind to DD on the way

We are expecting a sister for our DD Annie Coco.
We've had a little opposition to our favourite names for this one, but then none of my close relatives liked DD's name either but it gets a lot of compliments now and suits her down to the ground.

Would love thoughts on our current shortlist...

Ottilie (Would love to name her Ottilie Tiger and her pet name would be Tilly Tiger but I've been told this is cruel?)
Clementine
Sunny (would want to use Clementine as middle name for this)
Clover
Juniper (we just love the nn Junie)
Indigo (we love the nn Indie)
Mollie
Maggie

Tiger IMO would be a cruel middle name. ‘Tilly Tiger’, I mean, really? Has it not occurred to you that other kids may ridicule that name?

It’s not just what you like and think is ‘cute’ for a toddler.... you’ve got to think about whether it’s too unusual, silly, OTT, ridiculous to the point it could be detrimental to the child.

The other names aren’t my cup of tea but that doesn’t matter. And Ottillie on its own is really nice. Just don’t add ‘tiger’ at the end of it for goodness sake. Totally agree with a pp, it’s the type of name a C list celebrity would use to be different 🙄

HappyAndSmile · 24/01/2020 23:47

Santana is a lovely name with Sunny as a nickname.

Skittlesandbeer · 24/01/2020 23:46

If you like the nickname Sunny, what about Soleil as a first name? I know a couple of lovely ones, with slightly ‘out there’ mums! It has a bit of history, but also unusual.

Elle7rose · 24/01/2020 23:42

Most of those are lovely names. Ottilie with the nickname 'Tilly' (and a jokey nickname 'Tilly Tiger') sounds sweet.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 24/01/2020 23:42

Please just remember that this child will one day have to go to secondary school and write a cv and apply for jobs with this name. Other children can be very cruel and I can honestly say that where I work, a CV bearing the name ottilie tiger or sunny clementine would be immediately tossed in the shredder, unread, having been dismissed as a joke application much like the one we received once from Superman.

Do you want your child to hate you?

Milicentbystander72 · 24/01/2020 23:40

Also, Sunny is a character in the children's books "A Series if Unfortunate Events". She's extremely wonderful and unique!

Milicentbystander72 · 24/01/2020 23:38

I love your choices, although not too keen on
Indigo
Mollie
Juniper

I adore Clementine. I really like Ottilie and Clover.

I have a dd and a ds. DD's middle name is Pearl. She's 15 and says she often wishes it was her first name as it stands out a bit at school. I don't think she's change it now but I think just go for what you genuinely like.

I loved Marigold, Primrose and Rain when I was pg with her....I still wonder if I should have just gone with one of them and stuffed what anyone thought!

Honeywort · 24/01/2020 23:37

Haven’t rtft, but I know quite a few baby Ottilies- I think it’s one of those names that is suddenly going to get quite popular, so if you actively want an unusual name/ want her to be the only one on the class, it might be worth considering

isittooearlyforgin · 24/01/2020 23:35

Why do people get hung up on middle names? Ie ooh you can’t call her that first name with that middle name...in most cases no one even knows what anyone’s middle name is and it just doesn’t crop up so call your child what you want middle name wise. Ottilie is getting quite popular. - I’ve taught two and we’re both very sweet

MousematsRule · 24/01/2020 23:35

@SE13Mummy I LOVE that, thank you!

@JengaNonConfirming and @Dobbytheelf thank you

TheYearOfTheDog · 24/01/2020 23:32

I like them all except Ottilie
Maggie is my favourite.

They're all quite 'of the era' so whoever said ''you have to think of the child'' has no idea what children are really being called right now.

SE13Mummy · 24/01/2020 23:31

Ottilie is lovely and I think it goes well with Clover as a middle name.

Annie Coco and Ottilie Clover as a pair of sisters works; a bit cutesy because of the middle names but not outrageously so.

Chocmallows · 24/01/2020 23:31

The first time I heard a friend's DD name Flora (Flo) I kept thinking about margarine, but it grew on me. I don't like chavvy sounding names, but Clover, "Clo", I think could be ok.

MousematsRule · 24/01/2020 23:31

@Ellie56 haven't read it but I'm curious though...Will you tell me or do I have to read the book?

Imagine that one day your daughter might be a lawyer, doctor, accountant or any other professional and give her a real name that will signify respect (just as we mainly do with boys). What you call her as a nickname as a toddler and small child does not matter, but remember that she will be 35 one day and will need to wear her name.

MousematsRule · 24/01/2020 23:30

@GabsAlot I agree, hence Annie, Maggie and Margot. But sometimes you can really like the long and short version

Dobbytheelf · 24/01/2020 23:29

Ottile Tiger Smith (let's say) would be her name though, Tillie, Tillie Tiger, would be nicknames. If she became a high flying professional she could choose to be known as Ottilie Smith. Which is a lovely name. And when she came home she'd be Tilly Tiger. If she were to become anything else she could choose Tillie, Tillie Tiger, Ottile Smith, Tillie Smith. Middle names and nicknames mean nothing really, as long as you give your dd a name that she could use whether she's a CEO or a cleaner it's no-one else's business.

Marcipex · 24/01/2020 23:29

I wouldn’t use Sunny because of the popularity of Sonny for boys. How about Soleil?
I love Clementine and Clemency.
Otillie is okay.
I do think of Indigo as a boys name.
Mollie, Clover and Juniper are all nice, but have very different vibes.

MousematsRule · 24/01/2020 23:28

All the cow references are putting us off Clover quite nicely - which is a shame as I actually love it and you can say similar about a lot of names, Daisy for instance. But definitely feeling hmmmm about that one now,

Same with Sunny, not particularly bothered about the Sonny/Sunni comparisons but both on here and off here it does seem to get a lof of downward facing thumbs

JengaNonConfirming · 24/01/2020 23:27

My daughter has an uncommon, but not particularly out there, first name, with Tiger as a middle name. She is now an adult and has always lived her name. I love Tilly Tiger Grin

Chocmallows · 24/01/2020 23:25

Sunny Clementine reminds me of Sunny Delight awful orange drink and Tilly Tiger sounds childish Peppa Pig's friend. Rest sound fine.

GabsAlot · 24/01/2020 23:24

I honeslty dont get it when people say well i want o to call him samuel but i will call him sam

just name him sam then ffs

Ellie56 · 24/01/2020 23:24

If you've ever read Susan Lewis's "No Child of Mine" you would never put Ottilie and Tiger together. Just don't OP.

Ottilie, Indigo and Clover are my faves.
