Honest thoughts

My two daughters are called Lyla and Violet. While i love both names I worry I have made a mistake.
Please can you give me your honest thoughts about what commented that will face when they are kids/grown up so I can prepare myself?
My youngest is older than 1 so I can't change her name.

Agreed, @CatteStreet, there’s a really odd British tendency to make inane comments on names when you’re introduced, as if people think it’s expected etiquette, like replying to a greeting.

I mean, does a sixtysomething Hermione really need to hear ‘Oh, like in Harry Potter! I always used to think that was pronounced Hermy-Own!’ — after which the commenter beams and expects a compliment on their wit and originality?

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 26/01/2020 12:15

I think the names are lovely. Unusual enough but not in any way weird. They sound really pretty together - you have good taste and I am sorry that you are having some issues with your mental health, that sounds tough. Hope you are getting plenty of support for that ThanksThanks

CherryPavlova · 26/01/2020 08:15

I’d never have spotted a connection between the two. They don't rhyme. You like them, so what’s the problem?
I think Violet is pretty. Lyla wouldn’t be my first pick but I’d not think anything awful about it.

ravensoaponarope · 26/01/2020 08:04

They're lovely names.

halcyondays · 24/01/2020 09:40

They are lovely names and go fine together. It’s just one person mishearing the name.

Dreame2019 · 24/01/2020 09:27

Thank you all for your comments. No matter how much I seek reassurance from my friends and family I always think they are telling me what I want to hear and they are not being honest. I wanted (needed) to hear that the girls would not be ridiculed for their names. I also worry that they are too rhymey but it is good that most of you think they are just normal names. I wanted to do the best for them.

If people drop their Ts, the names could rhyme.
Some will say Violet as Vilet and with the glottal stop it would rhyme with Lyla.

It is laziness on their part. Enunciate both names correctly and it's not an issue.

Maduixa · 24/01/2020 07:42

Your daughters' names are good, together or solo. I didn't even make the connection about purple flowers - I thought you meant the names may be too rhymy. I'm Scottish, and like bluerussian I thought Lyla was a girl version of Lyle, nothing to do with lilacs.

If it helps at all - I have a childhood friend who is one of four siblings, all girls: Leslie, Hilary, Eden, and Robyn. Those are two quite matchy pairs, but all four of those girls grew up to be her own person. Stand up for your girls if anyone does say shite about their names. There's nothing bad or wrong about your choices.

CatteStreet · 24/01/2020 06:27

Brits (I am one, albeit an immigrant to elsewhere now) have a real cultural tendency to make silly comments about names. Oh, it rhymes with this and that. Oh, it sounds like lilac. Oh, it reminds me of [insert very tenuously linked 'rude' word]. Just ignore! As per a PP above, neither are names I would have chosen, but they're pretty mainstream atm, I think.

MrsBertBibby · 24/01/2020 06:22

They are perfectly good names and sound fine together.

I'm sorry you've had such a tough time. Are you still able to access treatment, it sounds like you still need counselling. Flowers

Wallabyone · 23/01/2020 21:24

Both gorgeous names, and they sound good together. My friend has a Lyla and it's beautiful on her. Try and put it out of your head and enjoy them xxx

user1493494961 · 23/01/2020 20:53

Violet is lovely.

Dreame2019 · 23/01/2020 20:25

I have suffered quite badly with PND and OCD after my second child and I second guess what people are thinking about me and I worry about that I've set the girls up for ridicule.

DamnItsSevenAM · 23/01/2020 19:36

I think they're pretty and nothing at all objectionable about them. Like a previous poster I'm wondering if there's something else making you anxious?

northernknickers · 23/01/2020 19:17

I adore the name Violet ☺️. Lyla is really pretty too...your girls will thank you when they are older OP, for giving them such beautiful names 💓

Ginbauble · 23/01/2020 19:16

Nothing wrong with either of those names, nice normal names!

You are always going to get people who don't like particular names snd make comments- just ignore them, rude feckers.

FernBritanica · 23/01/2020 19:13

They won't be introducing themselves as a pair for much longer - don't worry it's all good Smile

BettyUnderswoob · 23/01/2020 18:07

Two lovely names, nothing to worry about at all. You’re being a silly billy, OP 🙂

bridgetreilly · 23/01/2020 17:57

As they go through life this will become a total non-issue, because they won't be a pair, they'll be individuals. And people will know their actual names, not the mispronunciation. Don't worry about it.

ilovechocolatebiscuits · 23/01/2020 16:02

Love them both, would sound unusual in our generation but when they grow up they will have fairly common names!

Rachel345 · 23/01/2020 14:37

I think they're lovely together, both meaning the colour violet/lilac/Lyla (Lila is German for violet).

Ploppymoodypants · 23/01/2020 14:28

They are beautiful names. Absolutely nothing to worry about. And they are individuals and won’t be classed as ‘names together’

My girls names sound terrible together. But this is the first time I have even given it a thought. They are separate people so it doesn’t matter. I love their names individually

DramaAlpaca · 23/01/2020 14:24

I think they are fine.

OP, in the nicest possible way, you are overthinking.

TatianaLarina · 23/01/2020 14:22

Love Violet, prefer Lyra to Lyla which is a bit like lilo.

MrsCantthinkofaname · 23/01/2020 14:18

They’re both beautiful names. I particularly love Violet!
