Nina, Renée, Heidi or Esme

Opinions on these names and any other ideas that run along the same theme?
These are the top 4 my husband and I agree on, his order of preference is

  1. Renée
  2. Esme
  3. Heidi
  4. Nina

Mine is

  1. Nina
  2. Renée and Heidi joint
3.
  1. Esme

Not sure if we are having a boy or girl but girls names are much more difficult to choose!

Renée with an accent is ridiculous to me unless you are french or live in France. Not to mention how difficult it will be to type etc, it will inevitably get left off.

On the other hand, Nina, Esme and Heidi are all lovely names!

@nosquirrels, I love language and how completely separate cultures can come to the same name with completely different meanings!
The ‘ei’ sound is a bit of a tough one I think, I live in South Wales and most people even here will pronounce it as ‘eye’ when they correct pronunciation is more like somewhere between ‘eye’ and ‘ay’ my English in-laws struggle with it.

Yes - actually I think the original Norse name is Eir, but Eira has become a version. But you're right, I know it mostly as Welsh, it is very pretty I think. I loved Eirlys too but my DH was not keen, and the pronunciation is an issue, I guess.

You both have Heidi on similar places on your lists so that one makes the most sense to me. I'd discount your last place names totally.

Heidi is one of my favourite girls names, if I hadn’t decided on welsh names for my children I’d have definitely had a Heidi, I quite like Nina too. Tessa feels similar to me.

  3. Nina- feels a bit bland to me. I prefer a bit more 'oomph' to names.. very subjective idea and hard to explain I know...
4 Heidi - only one I dislike. Childlike compared to others.

Nina, beyond a doubt. Gorgeous, sophisticated, understated, wonderful.

Renee is OK, Heidi not great

I really dislike Esme. Dreary.

My daughter is a 25 yr old Esme and loves her name ....pronounced Esmeee not Ezmay!!

The whole Es-me / Es-may pronunciation has definitely put me off the name Esme. I'm not keen on having to correct people.

Surprised how popular Nina is and how unpopular Renée is, although I think Nina Renée works well together

Heidi is still up there at number 2 i think

I like Heidi. Don't like Renee at all reminds me of Renee & Renato or Allo Allo.
Esme isn't nice it's too granny. Don't mind Nina but prefer Gina for some reason or even Tina!

Nina is timeless, international, classic, unusual but recognisable and sassy.

Esme is sweet.

I don’t like the other two at all.

What about Lara, Rosa, Maya, Lotta, Amma, Anya, Greta, Frida, Thea or Mila?

I'm definitely swayed towards European, international types of names rather than traditionally British or American names, any other names which you guys can think of?

Nina is definitely my favourite by far and seems to have the most votes but it's my husbands least favourite Confused
