Can I call my baby boy Sioux?

My husband is a big music fan and with all of these gender neutral names flying about I was wondering if it would be cruel to call our baby boy Sioux?

To me the name Sioux is strong and mascaline - worriors. But I'd like to get your opinions please.

🤔🙂

You’d literally have a son who was a boy named Sue. Don’t do it.

GrumpyHoonMain · 14/01/2020 01:50

I actually knew a boy called Sioux. His nickname was Snivelling Susie.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/01/2020 01:37

It

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/01/2020 01:37

He'd better never work in Canada or the US. I would be very much frowned upon.

I know females called dylan, Stevie, Lee, bobbi, Cameron, Tyler, however rightly or wrongly the switch from female to names doesn’t seem to happen as often. Kelly is the only exception I can think of.
In my accent sue and Sioux are pronounced differently though so I don’t think it’s inherently female to me, but my worry would be the Native American connectionbeinv inappropriate

LightDrizzle · 14/01/2020 01:22

My first thought was cultural appropriation, and I’m born and bred in Yorkshire, along way from anyone of First Nation origins.

It would be really crass, leaving aside the “Sue” confusion.

If your aim is to play with gendered names, how about Tracy? I was at school with a boy called Tracy and I quite like it. He was cool.

Bluerussian · 14/01/2020 01:08

I suppose you can call your child 'Sioux' if you want to but as, I assume, you are not native American I don't see why you would.

Johnny Cash had a song called, 'A boy named Sue'. Different spelling but sounds the same.

Good luck to you but think how your child will feel when he goes to school.

Call him David (Dave), you can't have too many Daves.

Bouledeneige · 14/01/2020 01:07

HannaYeah - there was also Stevie Smith, poet. 'The Englishwoman is so refined, she has no bosum and no behind' and author of the immortal line 'I was too far out all my life and not waving but drowning.'

But I digress. Sioux? I really wouldn't. If you want them to toughen up just leave him on a hillside for winter.

Cameron: have met boy and girl Cameron's
Andy, Short for Andrea
Dylan: not personally.
Bobby: Short for Roberta, have met a female Bobbie
Tyler: One, but she was a strip club house mum. Have met a couple of female Taylor's.
Stevie: Short for Stephanie.

Glad you decided against Sioux, its bloody awful.

DramaAlpaca · 13/01/2020 18:35

Sioux? Hahahahahaha Grin

Nice try.

Pastry Grin

Doyoumind · 13/01/2020 14:20

I think you would be accused of cultural appropriation. Most people under 40 won't be aware of the musical connection and wonder why you have a boy named Sue. Unless they see it written down they will it's weird in a weird way and not a cool way. Sue feels middle aged housewife. No offence to any Sues.

CosmoK · 13/01/2020 14:19

Why do people think it's okay to use their children to make a statement?

Utterly selfish

Isadora2007 · 13/01/2020 14:16

Can you name your. Any Sioux? Yes.
Should you? No.

Mooey89 · 13/01/2020 14:15

Soubriquet · 13/01/2020 14:13
