Thoughts on the name 'Aslan'

My OH is Turkish and we've trying to agree on a name for a little boy (we have a girls name already).

We want a Turkish name with no special characters that is easy to pronounce in both Turkish and English. Asian means 'lion' in Turkish and is also the name of the lion from the Chronicles of Narnia, which I love.

What do you think? Is it too 'out there'?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Removing the s changes it a lot doesn’t it

Stick with Aslan

Lordfrontpaw · 13/01/2020 19:45

Aw - I’ve not met a child called Alan for a long time!

embolass · 13/01/2020 19:42

Drop the s and go for Alan then

Lordfrontpaw · 13/01/2020 19:41

Unless you go for a name that has versions in both - George, Alexander...

sel2223 · 13/01/2020 19:37

@misspiggy19 really? I was worried it was too masculine, giving a boy a name which means 'lion'

I'm not the best at these things though, I absolutely love 'Alev' (flame) for a boy but it's very much a girls name in Turkey and that's none negotiable apparently lol

@NewName73 - Jesus not God. Hence the scene in which he is sacrificed .

sel2223 · 13/01/2020 19:30

@embolass it's not a case of being 'desperate for something different', OH is Turkish and we're trying to find a Turkish/Arabic name that will work in both the UK and Turkey.
Aslan is a fairly common name in Turkey.

Sounds feminine to me

TheGirlWithGlassFeet · 13/01/2020 19:24

I really like it

embolass · 13/01/2020 19:15

Just thinking of potential jibes from peers as growing up. Have 3 boys all with ordinary names. Boys esp will take the p* about everything and anything. But hey it’s up to you. So many prospective parents are desperate for a different, never heard that one before name. Forgetting that the kid to carry it with them for ever.

MarshaBradyo · 13/01/2020 18:55

I like A names too.

sel2223 · 13/01/2020 18:52

@Oblomov20 yes, we've had 10 pages debating that haha 😂

OP posts:
Oblomov20 · 13/01/2020 18:50

God. Please no. The lion in the lion, the witch and the wardrobe is what every English person will think.

sel2223 · 13/01/2020 18:50

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all the honest responses and advice.

It's food for thought. We're still undecided but OH loves it and it's grown on me more and more through the course of this thread.

We're not finding out the sex so it could just as well be a girl after all this haha. No such drama for a girls name though (I hope).....she'll be called Alara, which we both love.

It seems we've been drawn to 'A' names

OP posts:
Clangus00 · 13/01/2020 18:33

I would go for it!
Been thinking about it all day.
Just don't tell anyone before he's born, afterwards no one is likely to say anything about TCON to your face then.

NameChange30 · 13/01/2020 18:29
Grin

Sorry I forgot you had already explained the surname thing Blush

Lovely that baby with have your dad's name as a middle name.

sel2223 · 13/01/2020 18:28

No one said the Narnia books should be banned FFS. It is perfectly acceptable to read literature and other creative work critically, acknowledging that it has flaws as well as good points. There are a lot of questionable things in both Friends and the Mr Men booksI think it's good to discuss it rather than just absorbing everything without considering the impact and implications

Are you my sister? 😉 we've had this same discussion/debate many, many times

ThePlantsitter · 13/01/2020 18:26

Aslan is really nice and would only be a problem if you live somewhere exclusively white British in my opinion. Even then it's a pretty minor problem, being named after an all powerful lion in an old kids book.

sel2223 · 13/01/2020 18:24

@embolass not a fan, ay? 😂

What Turkish names would you suggest?

OP posts:
sel2223 · 13/01/2020 18:23

@Blindspotfan yes, those are alternative spellings of the same name. I much prefer the spelling and sound of Aslan though....the others make me think 'arse' lol

OP posts:
embolass · 13/01/2020 18:22

Aslan ??!! Get a grip!

sel2223 · 13/01/2020 18:21

The child will have my dad's name as the middle name so don't concern yourselves about that....and the Turkish first name is something I'm pushing for, not OH, so it's not him 'getting what he wants'

As stated previously, i am still using my ex husbands surname and wouldn't want to give DC my maiden name as I got frequently picked on as a child because of it. That's why DC will have OH's surname.

OP posts:
Blindspotfan · 13/01/2020 18:17

I know a few kids with this name but they have it spelt as Arslaan or Arslan

Lordfrontpaw · 13/01/2020 18:16

I think it’s nice to reflect both sides of the family (mum is just as important as dad) in a child’s name if the parents aren’t from the same parts of the world.

NameChange30 · 13/01/2020 18:15

Nothing wrong with foreign names.
But if I'm carrying, birthing and raising a child I would like them to have at least ONE name to reflect MY heritage.
OP is English so I think her child should have at least one English name.
Just my opinion, obviously hers is the only one that counts! (Plus the father but he's getting what he wants already, his surname and a Turkish first name.)
