What do you think of the names Ayla (pronounced as it's written) or Isla (pronounced Eye-la) as girl's names? Preference?

Although Isla is more popular it is more classic whereas Ayla is very of the moment and will date less well

PlantPotting · 13/01/2020 20:49

Much much prefer Isla

AlpacaGoodnight · 13/01/2020 20:33

Much prefer Ayla!

Grufallosfriends · 13/01/2020 12:21

I much prefer Ayla.

When I see Isla I think Ees la, as in La Isla Bonita.

december20100 · 13/01/2020 11:44

Isla is one of the most popular at the moment and I do like it. But don't have Rose as the middle name or even worse Hyphenated.

BethanyGilbert · 13/01/2020 08:02

I like both. I know 4 Isla’s I can’t think off of the top of my head. Only one Ayla though I did call her Isla by mistake the first time I met her.

thetrinityisshite · 12/01/2020 23:52

@peachypetite

So I hear! Ach well.. I stand corrected. Apologies. I think they are different names though as the pronunciation is a bit different.

I still vote Isla.

wonderstuff · 12/01/2020 23:20

I have an Isla, I really thought it would be an unusual name! I teach secondary and had never met an isla. DD was born in 2007 and I guess I was on-trend.. She hates it when people mis-pronunce it, guess the upside of its popularity is that won't happen too often. In hindsight a silent letter is a bit tricky when you're learning to read and write it.

MrsP2015 · 12/01/2020 23:12

I used to love Isla until it became SO popular.
Ayla is gorgeous and prefer the Ayy- La sound rather than Isla.

Although Kayla is now quite popular...

peachypetite · 12/01/2020 23:08

@thetrinityisshite get your facts straight! It’s a very common Turkish name too, Ayla.

Astronica · 12/01/2020 23:02

Isla

JRUIN · 12/01/2020 20:49

Definitely Isla.

Isadora2007 · 12/01/2020 20:47

They’re very very popular around here. Ayla less so than Isla... but I still know 4 Aylas from 2-10 years old.

diddlediddle · 12/01/2020 20:45

I'm afraid they are rather unoriginal 😬

Any other names you're considering?

Tiddlertoddler · 12/01/2020 20:11

Are you pronouncing Ayla like Kayla without the K? I like both but think Ayla is more original if pronounced as above :)

Savannaha · 12/01/2020 20:08

they sound the same but ayla is more original

user1480880826 · 12/01/2020 20:05

If you don’t mind you daughter having the same name as everyone else then go for it.

ablisha · 12/01/2020 19:59

I'm a teacher and have an Aisla in my class but pronounced just as Isla would be - just another idea!

Wasail · 12/01/2020 19:47

Ayla for me is from Clan of the Cave Bear books. I like the name a lot.

My phone tried to autocorrect to Ayala which also seems a lovely name.

sel2223 · 12/01/2020 19:42

Ayla is one of our favourite Turkish names

AlexaShutUp · 12/01/2020 14:14

Another vote for Isla.

Flymetothestars · 12/01/2020 14:11

Isla ❤️

MikeUniformMike · 12/01/2020 13:58

Isla. Ayla looks ugly.

PlantPotting · 11/01/2020 22:34

I really love Isla
Much less popular numbers wise than it used to be according to the official data

TakeMe2Insanity · 11/01/2020 21:54

Ayla - the glow/halo of the moon 😍 In Arabic and Turkish
Isla - meaning island in Scotland

Both lovely names but different to one another. They do sound the same.
