Hi,

We are down to these two names,

Rowan
Ewan

I like both, they are quite similar sounding so having difficulty deciding.

I like that they are nature name, Rowan a type of tree and Ewan meaning from the yew tree

Which would you choose?

Thank you x

Ewan.. I’m biased as I have one 💙 Rowan is lovely too though!

Astronica · 02/01/2020 01:03

I prefer Ewan, though like pp I like the Euan spelling best.

BigFatBloomers · 01/01/2020 23:47

I like Ewan, although I prefer Euan. I also know a Welsh Ioan , pronounced yoan.

FluffyEggsontoast · 01/01/2020 23:39

Ewan is MUCH better

Rowan too trendy for me and I prefer it as a girls name. I work with newborns and agree there is a LOT of Romans (with an M) being born and it would really annoy me for the names to get muddled and misheard. I can see Roman being top 10 in the next couple of years if it’s current growth trajectory continues. I’d personally avoid a name that’s so similar when there’s so many names to pick from, why not just pick something else.
How about Oakley or Fraser (strawberry flower) or Ash or Radley or Jasper (jem stone), if you like nature names? I prefer Ewan though. 😊

Ewan the sheep association would deter me greatly!!

Whatsyourflava · 01/01/2020 23:23

18 years ago - you were ahead of the curve. You’re a trendsetter. ❤️
There’s a LOT of girl and boy Rowan/Roan/Rohan/Roman/Ronan’s these days . Especially Roman xx

Rollonspringtime2020 · 01/01/2020 23:17

I have a ds Roan. He is 18 and is very happy with his name!!

Whatsyourflava · 01/01/2020 23:15

Ewan is a lovely name! I’d definitely pick that. Much more unusual too.

Are you fussed about popularity though @Peacefrog23 - because if you look at the official ONS UK data and add up Rowan+Rohan+Roan in 2018 there were about 1,000 babies born with this name.

Then on top of that you have well over 1,000 Roman’s too (but those figures are jumping up year on year so there will be far more next year).

Whereas 2018 there were only 152 babies born that were named “Ewan”.

So Ewan is far more likely to be the only one in class or school. If that is even a factor for you.

There’s 2 Roman’s (with M) in my NCT group of 8 babies!! Not surprised to hear that it’s the fastest rising name. I have a Ronan next door too 🤣 Inundated!

Congratulations on your pregnancy- hope you pick a name you’re happy with.

PsychosonicCindy · 01/01/2020 23:15

There'll be less..sorry

PsychosonicCindy · 01/01/2020 23:14

Rowan is a great name is getting very popular though 3 at our school (2 boys 1 girl). I don't like Ewan as much but they'll be less of them! I prefer Owen.

MrsBertBibby · 01/01/2020 23:08

Ewan, of those two.

Flymetothestars · 01/01/2020 23:03

I also prefer Rowan as a girls names and think the boom in the Roman (with M) does really put me off. Plus there’s so many of these trendy names. Rohan, Roan, RoNan. Puts my head in a jumble.

When there’s so many lovely names, I’d personally pick a name that can stand on its own without all the hassle and mix up

Ewan is a great name and very rare these days! Great choice OP ✅

PlantPotting · 01/01/2020 22:48

I have a little girl called Rowan. I do still like the name but I posted on Mumsnet earlier that I wish I’d checked mumsnet first for advice before naming her, because I hadn’t anticipated how many (well meaning) people would shorten it to Row (which I don’t like) ... plus I had no idea that Roman (with an M) was the fastest rising boys name in 2018. Don't I know about it now 😂 There’s 2 Roman’s at the small local nursery and I get a bit fed up of having to say “Rowan with a W” as the three of them get so muddled up.

Plus I had it at the hospital recently too, people saw my daughters name written down and assumed Roman (presumably as there’s so many being born at the moment 🙈). Apparently a RoNan is going to be starting at the nursery in January too 😩🙄😆

Anyway it’s not the end of the world, my daughter has two middle names to fall back on if she chooses. I will do a bit more research next time with my next child though and will ask around in Mumsnet so I go into naming my next one a bit more prepared !!

DramaAlpaca · 01/01/2020 22:43

Ewan for me.

I prefer Rowan as a girls' name.
