I saw this name on a TV credits and sort of like it. Around here Annabelle is very popular so a bit different ?

It's pn Marry-Bell.

SendTheRemotePlease · 02/01/2020 22:22

Maribel is very common in Spain (we live there). Most seem to be 40's and 50's though. I've never heard of anyone under 25 with the name. The DC have had a few teachers called Maribel, and our Estate Agent was also called Maribel.

FreckledLeopard · 02/01/2020 16:08

Mariel is a nice alternative - I love the actress Mariel Hemingway in Manhattan.

MerryMarigold · 02/01/2020 16:07

Marisa is Spanish and very pretty

Whatsyourflava · 01/01/2020 23:17

I like Mabel

17caterpillars1mouse · 01/01/2020 22:01

I really like it

jamburglar · 01/01/2020 22:00

Oh sorry, already suggested! My new year's resolution should be RTFT

jamburglar · 01/01/2020 21:59

I agree with the babybel comment, first thing I thought of too. How about Marisol? Similar sounding, and unusual without being too out there

Angryordisappointed64 · 01/01/2020 21:36

Love it

pallisers · 01/01/2020 21:35

Ds had a friend called Marisol (also of spanish origin - shortened version of maria de las soledad I thing). I thought it was very pretty.

(completely off point here but this thread made me sad that there are so few varieties of potato in the supermarkets in the US - even the good supermarkets)

Ihaveamind · 01/01/2020 21:30

I really like it and had a vague Spanish association when I saw it first so glad a PP confirmed that for me ☺️

TatianaLarina · 01/01/2020 21:24

I like both Maribel and Mirabel (the latter slightly more).

mathanxiety · 01/01/2020 21:12

It's not 'American South' or made up.

It's a popular name in Puerto Rico and US PR communities.

DramaAlpaca · 01/01/2020 17:43

I think it's very pretty. Mirabel is nice too.

Novia · 01/01/2020 13:53

It's a Spanish name - very pretty, but how would you pronounce it? Here it is pronounced marry-bell.

june2007 · 01/01/2020 13:43

I too think of Meribel the French ski town. But then I have met children called Devon and Chesea and Leister, Chester and London have al been used as names so does that matter?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 01/01/2020 13:31

Mirabelle is nicer imo

flickeringcandle45 · 01/01/2020 13:28

Sounds like a French ski resort to me.

MerryMarigold · 01/01/2020 13:26

I instantly thought Babybel. You've got an instant nickname when she's a baby which she will never grow out of!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 01/01/2020 13:23

But Maribel is actually not the name of a potato, (the potato is Marabel) so I really don’t know what anyone else is going on about.

I'm just saying that's what it reminds me of - maybe just because they're my favourite variety! It's just that Piper, Melody, Edward etc all have plenty of other meanings and associations as well as being (or sounding like) kinds of potato.

I believe Toyota made a car called an Estima a few years back, but sadly, I don't think you could power it with potatoes.

ChipsyChopsy · 01/01/2020 13:21

I like it. It's feminine but not cutesy.

Teachermaths · 01/01/2020 13:15

Sounds like babybel.

Quite cute though.

Iliada · 01/01/2020 13:13

By the way, actual names of potatoes include:
Annabelle, Anya, Barbara, Cara, Colette, (king) Edward, Juliette, Laura, (Maris) Piper, Melody, Nadine, Nicola, Rosalind and Viola.

But Maribel is actually not the name of a potato, (the potato is Marabel) so I really don’t know what anyone else is going on about.

Iliada · 01/01/2020 12:46

Maribel is a traditional Spanish name for women whose real name is María Isabel.

However, these days I think lot of Spanish people are just going for Maribel as the real name.

It’s a really nice name, IMO. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s not a traditional European name.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 01/01/2020 11:14

It's the name of a Really good potato from the Asda extra special range.

That's my instant thought - we know a young Marabel and I always think of (delicious) potatoes when I hear her name mentioned.

Granted, it's not as exotic as Spudulika....
