Just wondering what unusual ‘only met one’ names people had come across in their lives?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
TheJoxter · 28/12/2019 16:25

@divebar based on a book called the Diddakoi by Rumer Godden. Never watched it but was one of my favourite books as a child

Divebar · 28/12/2019 15:56

There used to be a TV show in the 70s called Kizzy- it was about a gypsy girl I think.

Skyejuly · 28/12/2019 14:31

I know of a kizzie. In her 50s I think.

cupprupe · 28/12/2019 14:29

I'm gobsmacked at how many there are! Every time someone hears my name they say they've never heard it before. Maybe I'll get my own cup and keyrings soon, I always hated never finding many thing with my name on it!

cupprupe · 28/12/2019 14:27

Just looked, there are quite a few!! Most do seem to be younger though.

cupprupe · 28/12/2019 14:27

Really?! I've only ever seen it with a y. Maybe it got more popular but originally it was only ever spelt with a y.

TheJoxter · 28/12/2019 13:44

I’ve met a few Kizzis @cupprupe some were short for Kezia(h) but some were just Kizzi

RollingOutOfBed · 28/12/2019 13:20

Well quite a lot called Kizzi.

RollingOutOfBed · 28/12/2019 13:20

There's a lot of Kizzis on Facebook.

StegosaurusRex · 28/12/2019 13:16

Londubh

How do you pronounce that, @JesusMaryAndJosepheen?

cupprupe · 28/12/2019 11:59

Name changed for this as it's obviously massively outing. Grin

Mine is Kizzi, there's only one other in the world spelt like that as I know of (usually it has a y on the end) and amazingly she has the same surname too!! (And is same age, same height, same hair and eye colour!!) It's African.

Dh is Nakomis. Native American girl's name. Confused

DS is Eifion. My Grandads name and Welsh but I've never heard of it apart from them.

CatkinToadflax · 28/12/2019 11:52

Vigel. Brother is Nigel.

TidaQuel · 28/12/2019 08:44

I know of a Rainbow, possibly the same one as mentioned up thread.

Other unusual names, mostly already mentioned

Xana
Hester
Kester
Cassius
IDG
Shoshana

My friend taught a Chanel although to make the name a little more unique, it was spelt Channel.

FeigningHorror · 28/12/2019 08:22

That’s adorable, @JesusMaryAndJosepheen. Even if he will be Lonny by secondary school.

There is a well-known US chess player called Awonder. His brother, if I recall correctly, is Adream.

Subtledifference · 28/12/2019 02:26

Oak. Nice enough but their surname was Hunt.
Confused

AlphaJura · 28/12/2019 02:17

Not really weird on their own but someone I used to know said they knew 2 brothers called Wayne and Dwayne Confused

LarkDescending · 28/12/2019 01:58

I’ve only known one of each of these:

Ainoa, Corinna, Corisande, Elka, Indigo, Isis, Lettice, Lorinda, Loveday, Lucasta, Minka, Sanchia, Shanti, Topaz

Cassian, Cosmo, Darius, Fabian, Kester, Lucian

GrannyBags · 27/12/2019 23:48

I taught a Frillyfrocks once. She was the first girl after 12 boys. Irish traveller family so after every pregnancy was announced many lacy frocks would be given to mum. Boys all had Biblical names - Levi, Moses etc
She was known as Fifi at school

LuluJakey1 · 27/12/2019 23:41

There was a girl at nursery with DS who was called Oracle.

I had an uncle who was called Gay. It was not until he died that I discovered it was short for Gabriel. It is quite a common short form in Ireland.

I had a great aunt called Ansibella. She was called Ansie by the family.

modgepodge · 27/12/2019 23:29

I taught a Princess Fiona once. She went by Fiona day to day but it was princess Fiona in the register.

Also in schools have taught/been aware of ocean, Aurelia and a Troy.

Not sure why any little girl would be bothered by the Aurora Disney connection. There must be millions of Elsas out there!!

I haven’t seen any evidence of racism on this thread. Comfort, blessing, Aileen and gruff ARE unusual names in England, where the majority of MN readers are from. It doesn’t matter that they’re common elsewhere, pointing out you’ve only met one woman called comfort doesn’t mean you’re racist. Likewise, I wouldn’t find a thread with people from Germany/Ghana/India with people saying ‘I’ve only met one Emma/Tom/Jamie’ racist.

hannahfaith · 27/12/2019 20:12

(I'm just spamming the thread at this point but I keep remembering obscure names)
I waitress and in our frequent diner program we have a John Johnson, John Smith and a Danny McDaniels.
John and Danny aren't bad names but I just can't understand a parent who would pair those with the previously mentioned surnames.

hannahfaith · 27/12/2019 20:09

On a thread of mine someone else had commented that they knew a girl called Loveday

hannahfaith · 27/12/2019 20:05

I went to school with a boy called LA and his brothers name was Seven.
My mom is a teacher and she had a student named La-a pronounced La dash a
