Jesse, Dylan or Finley

Hey, I think these are our final 3 names.
Baby will be half Irish, growing up down south in the UK and a brother to Rory.
I love Jesse, DH loves Dylan, we both liked Finley but concerned it's very popular.

Dylan, Finley then Jesse

I always think of a fish when i hear the name Finley

MikeUniformMike · 22/12/2019 15:12

The rabbit was Dillon

Batmanandrobin123 · 22/12/2019 15:10

@Lorddenning1 when you say people ask about his name, what do they say? Is it mostly positive reactions?

I had no idea there was another pronunciation of Dylan. I am old so I always see a dopey rabbit called Dylan. Anyway, not keen, they always seem to be very naughty .
Jesse a big Jessie, so I wouldn’t use it. Teasing usually starts in secondary though, not primary.
I love Finley, also Finn.

MikeUniformMike · 22/12/2019 14:58

1Micem0use, I know people from Gower who say it the Welsh way.
" Maen sbwriel" as you put it is " Rubbish stone" so I'm not sure what point you are trying to make.

bearfood · 22/12/2019 14:57

Agree with a PP about not knowing how names will pan out. My Finn is 15 and it wasn't popular then but is everywhere now. Obviously that's my favourite but I like Dylan too. Not keen on Jesse.

KateK00 · 22/12/2019 14:55

I have a Dylan pronounces Dil un like Bob Dylan, never heard it pronounced any other way 🤭

ReadthisEarlier · 22/12/2019 14:44

I come from Laugharne and we most definitely say Dylan Thomas as Duh-LAN. Dylan is absolutely not Dillon or Dillan.

1Micem0use · 22/12/2019 14:41

Dylan Thomas, the famous welsh poet, had his name pronounced the English way of Dil un. I grew up in Wales and never knew a single person who had it pronounced with a dul. Maen sbwriel.

MikeUniformMike · 22/12/2019 14:34

We3kingsoforientareandabump
The Dyl is pronounced like the english word Dull.
The an is like the an in can, pan, man.
Welsh words have the stress on the last but one syllable
so DULL-an (not DIL-un)

Lorddenning1 · 22/12/2019 14:32

My little one is called Jesse :) it's one of the oldest names in the bible, he is 3 and we call him Jess for short. Some people do ask about his name but I like the fact it's different for a boy, I think the term big Jessie is a generation thing, my dad and grandad use to say it but I don't think when he goes to school it will be a known saying for young kids.

daisypond · 22/12/2019 14:30

We3kingsoforientareandabump - something like Duhlan. The Y is “uh” (as in butter) and the “an” is a defined “an”, not “un” or “‘n”.

MikeUniformMike · 22/12/2019 14:25

I like classic names. Boring maybe but names that are unremarkable enough for them to cause a reaction.

Finn is nicer than Finley, but has naughty boy associations. I only know one adult Jesse and he said he has learnt to live with it.

Dylan I dislike, because it was hugely popular in my age group, but with the Welsh pronunciation (DULL-ann). The welsh pron. is fine.

I have no objection to Rory. (My inability to say R aside)

As you have an Irish connection, I'd pick an Irish name. I really like Patrick, if that helps.

Batmanandrobin123 · 22/12/2019 13:52

@MikeUniformMike not especially helpful. What names do you like?

OP posts:
MikeUniformMike · 22/12/2019 13:44

Hate Dylan
Jesse is a big jessie
Finlay seems a bit wet and Finn is a bad boy

Batmanandrobin123 · 22/12/2019 13:24

I feel like Dylan and Finley are both less risky. There is a small risk with Jesse due to the 'big Jesse' thing and it's similarity to the girls name Jessie that holds us back. Not sure if I can take the risk on him being picked on for it. It does seem to be getting more popular though which is good as it will seem more normal for a boy.

Jesse is my favourite. I would use it if I were to have another DS.
I like Dylan too.
Dislike Finely for some reason. I prefer Flynn.

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 22/12/2019 13:16

Ok so I have a Dylan and we pronounce it dil-un

How should it be pronounced? 🙈

happyjack12 · 22/12/2019 13:00

my Ds son is Finlay-now 19 years old - we'd never known another one when we chose his name. So, even if you pick something you think is rare...you never know how things will pan out! :)

bridgetreilly · 22/12/2019 12:52

Dylan.

Poorolddaddypig · 22/12/2019 12:42

Okay Finley is a nice name but I am not exaggerating when I say that the last five baby boys I know of have been called this! I’m worried it will become the next Evie - ruined by its own popularity because it just becomes boring. Dylan is cute but l love Jesse!

daisypond · 22/12/2019 12:27

I like Dylan the most but it’ll be mispronounced (or gained an anglicised pronunciation, however you want to look at it). Finley I’m not wild about. I would never consider Jesse.

Batmanandrobin123 · 22/12/2019 12:15

Dylan would be pronounced dil-un that's the only way I've ever heard it pronounced.
Not against the Dillon spelling as I think it's more Irish? Don't want to make things difficult for the little fella though.

Finley or Jesse

Mamabear88 · 22/12/2019 11:54

Finley is the best, lovely name and you both like it. Then Jesse. Hate Dylan, sorry.
