Girls shortlist - interested to hear opinions!

tamarisk44 · 15/12/2019 19:21

So husband and I have been through every girl's name in existence (twice!) and these are the only ones he likes. Everything I love was vetoed so I'm having to form an opinion around a list of names that I wouldn't have necessarily chosen myself. I keep just staring at the list and am making zero progress! We've agreed not to discuss names with anyone else, but I could really do with a bit of a sounding board on this, so keen to hear general opinions on the following...

Lily
Rosie
Scarlett
Sienna
Violet
Olive
Margot
Maisie
Holly
Greta
Grace
Aurora
Audrey
Elsie
Flora
Aubrey
Darcy
Luna

Perhaps it's more of a long list but I'm struggling to really narrow it down. There's lots on the list that I like in isolation, but when it comes to calling a child that forever I find I don't even know what I think! I don't want to play it too safe with a "boring" name but also want something that isn't going to sound too silly if she got a serious job as an adult.

No, you're good. Choose anything, it doesn't really matter probably. It's not like it'll be special for you or anything.

tamarisk44 · 16/12/2019 21:44

@FizzyGreenWater Just an opinion on the names is fine, thank you.

Sorry ignore previous.. new thread started

FizzyGreenWater · 16/12/2019 19:05

So literally this list contains some names you hate, just not the worst ones, and you're tying to make the best of it?
That's so bloody sad and I really hope you get the courage up to tell him he's being a bully and ruining this for you.

Your DH is a shit!

FizzyGreenWater · 16/12/2019 19:03

I can't make him compromise, but I can make me compromise.

Yep, that's what I mean by bullying.

This came up on another name thread recently .The H simply refused point-blank to discuss any names except the ones he liked.

Compromise means something that goes both ways. You compromising because he won't isn't you compromising, it's you being pressured or bullied or whatever you want to call it.

How about you say, the baby has your family surname so sorry but I'm choosing the first name? Here's MY list, pick your best five and I'll choose out of those?

You won't do that because you don't want to force him into a name he doesn't like. He's quite happy to do that to you however.

So sorry, no, your nice DH isn't that nice. :(

SebandAlice · 16/12/2019 18:49

I like Violet and Greta.

Zxc098 · 16/12/2019 18:49

Really love Margot and Greta, old and not too weird bit still not very common. Both sound nice with Holly as a middle name.

I'd just like to ask as I can't seem to start a new thread, I would like to call my baby girl Versace Felicia, something unusual with something old but not too common! I love the sound of the name Versace, think it sounds high class and pretty.. and how tart looks written down, however I have never heard of anyone else called this as a first name. (Although there are lots of Chanels, Dolces, Diors etc..) Is it too weird or has anyone else heard of someone called Versace?

TildaTurnip · 16/12/2019 18:46

I like Mabel best. Then Olive.

I really dislike Margot.

tamarisk44 · 16/12/2019 18:41

@FizzyGreenWater I wouldn't say bully, but he is being a pain in this process, yes. I'm just trying to make the best of the situation - surely when I hate all the names he loves (not all of them are on this list because I took off my most hated ones) and he hates all the ones I love, someone has to compromise. I can't make him compromise, but I can make me compromise. I don't know. It's not ideal, but I'm not interested in forcing him into a name that he doesn't like either 🤷🏻‍♂️

Love Lily and like Violet

Starlight39 · 16/12/2019 18:34

I like Holly, Flora and Violet best from the list - my favourite is Flora. Although agree with those who have said Violet can sound good or bad depending on accent. We were next to a family with a 5 year old Violet on a campsite in the summer and all we heard was "VILE-ET??!! Stop that VILE-ET!" Confused.

Mabel is lovely too and Tabitha but I'd always worry they'd get called Tabby which is a bit of a cat name to me!

It sounds like you're being a bit more compromising than your DH on this!

mamablondie · 16/12/2019 18:17

I like Scarlett and Holly (but I have. Ruby, so maybe I just like red a lot aha).

Popularity wouldn’t put me off but Lily really is super popular. Gorgeous name though! I agree with someone’s earlier suggestion of ‘Lilian’ ?

MoonlightMistletoe · 16/12/2019 17:51

I love Violet and Mabel

FizzyGreenWater · 16/12/2019 17:02

Lily - boring, overused
Rosie - boring, overused, bit twee too
Scarlett - naff, on the way out
Sienna - awful, naff as hell
Violet - fashionable at the moment (isn't it funny how these things work?! He would NEVER have thought of Violet if you were doing this even 5 years ago!) But no. It's actually really harsh, and the short form Vi is AWFUL.
Olive - just no.
Margot - lovely, but gettign more popular if that bothers you
Maisie - Margot is nicer
Holly - like, but a bit meh
Greta - lovely, also getting more popular but great
Grace - boring, overused, may as well call her Baby103856433.
Aurora - too disney and naff
Audrey - can see where you're going, but too Coronation Street. Again, Margot's a better choice for this vibe.
Elsie - as above
Flora - lovely, classic, sweet
Aubrey - I think boy's name, also just not that nice
Darcy - naff
Luna - ok, bit nothing, getting more popular.

I'd go for Flora, Greta, or Margot.

And your H is a bit of a bully, no? Do you all share a surname, HIS surname by any chance? Then I suggest you tell him he's not showing a very nice side of himself right now. 'Won't budge' is a very unattractive look.

tamarisk44 · 16/12/2019 16:54

Absolutely loving all your fierce opinions, it's proving so helpful, thank you to everyone so far 😊

Lily - nice but overused. Don't like Lil.
Rosie - nice
Scarlett - ok
Sienna - no
Violet - no
Olive - no
Margot - no
Maisie - not keen
Holly - prefer Polly or Molly
Greta - no
Grace - no
Aurora - no
Audrey - Roberts
Elsie - Tanner
Flora - lovely
Aubrey - old man's name
Darcy - this was a hideous name even for a beautiful ballerina
Luna - lunacy

userabcname · 16/12/2019 14:37

I love Luna the best and it was on our shortlist if DS2 had been a girl. I also like Lily, Rosie and Olive from your list. Flora is quite nice too. Audrey and Margot have quite a cool vintage theme to them.

TatianaLarina · 16/12/2019 14:19

Aurelia, Aurora and Violet are the stand outs for me.

I like Margot but there are loads.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 16/12/2019 13:55

Poorolddaddypig · 16/12/2019 13:45

Personally I like your list more than your husbands!

Poorolddaddypig · 16/12/2019 13:42

Lily - pretty but soooo many of them
Rosie - I prefer Rose, with Rosie as a nickname
Scarlett - LOVE Scarlett! So sassy and cool
Sienna - nice sounding but is apparently seen as ‘chavvy’ now (according to other MN threads I’ve read!)
Violet - beautiful
Olive - LOVE Olive!
Margot - also love Margot!
Maisie - cute but a little dull
Holly - same as Maisie
Greta - pretty
Grace - Same as Maisie and Holly
Aurora - I loved this but everyone said it was either too chavvy or too Disney and it put me off Sad LOVE nickname Rory too
Audrey - very cool and strong
Elsie - pretty
Flora - lovely and love nn Flo
Aubrey - dislike - much prefer Audrey
Darcy - a bit ‘now’ - will date badly
Luna - same as Darcy

Tillygetsit · 15/12/2019 22:46

I think we may be married to the same man as we're having EXACTLY the same problem but with boys names!
Please could you share your boys name incase by some miracle it's one we've overlooked?
From your list I really like Maisie. Good luck OP.

Astronica · 15/12/2019 21:57

Just to add, I get worried when you say it's your DH list and you don't get any names you love onto the list. Make sure you find a name you love, even if you need to revisit your so called crossed off names. Sometimes they can grow on the other partner, in the same way that some of his favourites may grow on you.

17caterpillars1mouse · 15/12/2019 21:56

Lily - I like Lily, though I think I prefer the Lillie spelling. Although I know quite a few Lily's over 5, I don't know any little Lily's. I love Lillian, and quite like Lilith and Lillia

Rosie - I like as a nn but prefer a longer name as a full name. I really like Rosalind and Rosalin

Scarlett - it's nice enough. I know a few baby Scarlett's. I worry it might date

Sienna - not a fan at all

Violet - pretty name

Olive - love it

Margot - not a fan, but it seems very in currently

Maisie - I like it, despite it not being my usual style at all

Holly - nice, curtsey name but ages better than most of them I feel

Greta - love it

Grace - beautiful classic name

Aurora - the world and his dog seem to be called this recently

Audrey - lovely retro chic. I know a lovely 2 year old Audrey

Elsie - dislike, too cutesy

Flora - lovely name

Aubrey - it's a boys name to me

Darcy - not a fan I find it a bit Meh

Luna - see aurora

My top choices from. Your list would be
Olive
Greta
Grace
Lily

ivykaty44 · 15/12/2019 21:56

I wouldn’t use Aubrey, it’s a local butcher and so I associate it with a butchers and as a Male name
