Shay for a boy?

Hi,

We like shay and are considering this name for a boy. Although i know it can also be a girls name, do you think it sounds girly?
Or suits a boy better?
What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance x

I have taught two boys with that name (both have been little shits ) so that puts me off lol. But it is a boys name too

TheVanguardSix · 07/01/2020 23:49

Oh one of the absolutely loveliest boys I know is a Shay. Not sure if he spells it Shay or Shea. But he is amazing! His brother is Beau or Bo (not sure). But they are gorgeous boys.

littlealexhorne · 07/01/2020 23:42

I know two or three Shay's, all boys. Never heard of it being used as a girl's name personally.

sixtimes · 07/01/2020 21:02

I knew a boy called Shea a few years ago - he was a lovely boy Smile

Really gorgeous name for a boy @Peacefrog23

Chatteringclasses · 07/01/2020 20:23

Shay in Ireland is short name for Seamus as Charlie is to Charles in the UK. Seamus is the Irish for James. Lots of people use shortened names only , I think it sounds lovely .

Soen · 07/01/2020 20:04

I know a bloke called Shae. I think both spellings are lovely.

Sexnotgender · 07/01/2020 20:03

I used to work with a male Shay.

Slink01 · 07/01/2020 19:59

I like it. But more importantly if you like it then it that should be all that matters.

Love the name Shay for a boy @Peacefrog23

It’s definitely seen as a boys name if you look at the 2018 statistics- Shay is number 366 in the charts for boys (whereas it’s outside the top 3,000 names for girl’s! Less than 10 girls with this name)

I love it and going to add it to my list, it’s a bit different and unique but not at all weird. Would never have thought of it- thank you!

ShivD · 06/01/2020 11:02

There are 3 in my kids school- 2 are just Shay, one is shortened from Seamus. It’s a Catholic school and all are from Irish families (although 2nd gen).

Love this name for a boy

ParkheadParadise · 06/01/2020 00:28

I've got a great nephew called Shay.
I like it and he's gorgeous.

MopsRUs · 06/01/2020 00:25

It's fine for a boy.

FluffyEggsontoast · 05/01/2020 22:29

I really like Shay for a boy

loriat · 05/01/2020 22:04

I've met a couple of male Shays, never known it as a girl's name. I like it.

thebluearsefly · 05/01/2020 21:59

Wow @bobbybluecat - nice bit of racism there. You sound deeeeelightful!

Dieu · 05/01/2020 21:58

I've only ever known boys by this name ... and I'm a former teacher!
I like it.

Queenhoneybee · 05/01/2020 21:58

I know siblings Shay (girl) and Sean (boy).

BobbyBlueCat · 05/01/2020 21:56

My first thought was 'traveller community', followed by 'chav'.

FluffyEggsontoast · 05/01/2020 21:55

I really like Shay for a boy. Cool name

percheron67 · 05/01/2020 21:52

It sounds as though half the name is missing.

Beingyellow · 05/01/2020 21:50

It's fine for a boy. There's a boy in my son's class called Shay.

AppleKatie · 05/01/2020 21:49

I don’t like it. Seamus is nice enough but just Shay isn’t to my taste.

I’ve only ever met boys called Shay though I have met a female Shaya.

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 05/01/2020 21:42

I know a little Shay (boy), so I would assume a Shay was a boy (and I much prefer it for a boy than a girl).
