Nina - having second thoughts

BornSnippy · 08/12/2019 08:16

We have called our newborn Nina which we see as a strong, fun, classic, international and sassy name.

We have had some really negative reactions which have shocked me.

What do people think of Nina? She’s not registered yet so we could change.

Your MILs behaviour is terrible! Don't let her make you have second thoughts about what is a lovely name! Sounds like she probably won't be happy unless she is called Catherine regardless 🙄 I would be getting your DH to have words with her! X

Hayls17 · 15/12/2019 19:44

Nina is a beautiful name

outofideasforname · 14/12/2019 16:35

So glad you kept it! My niece is Nina - I adore it. My sister also liked Rose (also lovely) but I'm glad she went with Nina, esp. as she would have been one of 2 Rose's in her class. Also, wouldn't you rather be called Nina than Rose in your 40s or 50s?

As for your MIL Tina concerns, I saw that Nina is in the top 10 names of baby announcements in the Telegraph. Not that that really means anything but I think it's pretty good evidence that it is not dated or somehow weird. And my favorite French clothing designer (creator of the brand Sezane) has a daughter called Nina. As does Amanda Seyfried...

I'm starting to warm to Granny Arsehole, who appears to be a massive troll

Eh?

cheesydoesit · 13/12/2019 11:08

Ok I should have RTFT. I'm glad she is coming round. I hope in the future she is rightfully embarrassed by her pathetic behaviour.

cheesydoesit · 13/12/2019 11:07

Only on the first page but MIL can fuck off! Who the fuck does she think she is?

Don't bother seeing her until she gets grip and calls your baby by her real name.

burritofan · 12/12/2019 13:14

Neeny-Noo! I'm starting to warm to Granny Arsehole, who appears to be a massive troll.

FizzyGreenWater · 12/12/2019 12:12

Sounds like she's around quite a lot!

Comment on how strange it is to hear her having difficulty with a name. 'It makes you sound like a confused little old lady! So funny!'

diddlediddle · 12/12/2019 11:26

Neeny noo 😂

Poor woman, she really struggling with this isn't she 😂😂

AudacityOfHope · 12/12/2019 10:33

You know what, my mum didn't like my son's name at first.

But I actually had no idea until he was about three, we were talking about names, and she said 'did you not notice I didn't say his actual name for the first few days, I couldn't get my mouth round it!'

I hadn't noticed. And she didn't say, just kept her own counsel until she got used to it. Because she's nice.

Sounds like your MIL is getting there, she just could have done without being a bitch first! That kind of thing really sticks when you've got a newborn and are feeling vulnerable as hell, like someone has peeled the outer layer of your skin off.

Congratulations on the birth of Nina!

I'd start calling MIL the wrong name to see how long it takes her to get annoyed! I like Nina, beautiful name. Your MIL is acting like a dick.

MummaOf2Nearly3 · 12/12/2019 10:21

It's short and sharp. Like Nina and the Neurones! However it could be pronounced weirdly by people with accents. Like 'Niyna'

FairytaleofBykerGrove · 12/12/2019 10:21

Well done for sticking to your guns OP. It sounds like your mil is trying to wind you up at this stage. Nina is a lovely name. I only know one and she’s extremely cool.

BornSnippy · 12/12/2019 10:14

This morning she has progressed to Neeny-Noo. As in “Can I take Neeny-Noo to vote with me this morning?”. This is the first time she has used any word remotely like Nina so I think she is coming to terms with things.

OP I am pleased you decided to stick with the name you and your dh likes.

When 17 years ago we named our son Conrad we had a lot of mixed reactions. My mother was the worst she announced " that's HORRIFIC" I stood my ground and told her I didn't much care for what she had named her children so why did she think she would like what I named mine.

11 years later she came to stay with us for a week and said during this to me "I always liked the name Conrad it is such a good strong name" She had an association for it 11 years later. It was her grandson who she loved and cared about so the name now meant something positive.

This will happen with your MIL too. Just ignore and let her get on with it.

NoSauce · 11/12/2019 22:32

Your MIL sounds horrible. Little madam Crown Shock cheeky cow.

MummaOf2Nearly3 · 11/12/2019 21:29

Don't change the name of your child based on someone else's opinion! What they name their child is their own business, you made this beautiful human, it is your right to name her whatever you choose!

Winkywoop · 11/12/2019 13:53

I know 3 adult Ninas IRL :
One went to Cambridge and is a lawyer
One is a doctor specialising in paediatric oncology
One is a clinical study manager at a large pharmaceutical company

At what point are they meant to stop getting through life because of their names? Confused

diddlediddle · 11/12/2019 13:46

@BornSnippy is your MIL talking about herself in the third person again? I'm sure the "little madam" will get used to the name Nina soon enough and stop telling everyone about her bowel movements 😂

Am hoping we get an update from OP soon! Don’t think she’s commented since starting this thread six pages ago!

Mishappening · 11/12/2019 10:12

Little Madam - how on earth do you stand this woman? What can possibly be going on in her head? I wish you luck with this one!!!!

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/12/2019 09:35

Little Madam!! God your MIL is a cow.

Topseyt · 11/12/2019 09:22

Glad you are sticking to your guns.

MIL continues to behave like an arse though. I'd go with the suggestion of Granny Arsehole, and when MIL objects tell her that you will continue with it until she learns to pronounce and use the name Nina.

If after that MIL still remains unable to call your daughter Nina then you will have to severely cut back on how often she is allowed to visit you and your baby.
