Ada or Ayda?

What would you say is a better spelling? I would pronounce both the same, would you pronounce them differently?

Also, what's your thoughts on this name? It's one that's been in my mind for a few weeks now as potential for our baby girl due March 2020.

Yikes, I really dislike it. Really grannyish like Gladys and Ethel

Yes me too. Some old fashioned names are beautiful but Ada, Gladys and Ethel are not amongst them.

If OP is set on it then at Aida is at least a real name with a cultural background rather than a spelling mistake.

WeDieAndSeeBeautyReign · 01/12/2019 16:53

I think Ayda is a phonetic spelling of Ida

I'm not sure why anyone would need a phonetic spelling for a name as simple as Ada.

Ayda looks like a spelling mistake for Aida which is not pronounced the same way as Ada.

LikeARedBalloon · 01/12/2019 16:48

Beautiful name. Ada was my chosen baby name....but it didn't go with the surname Sad Booo!

PrincessLouis · 01/12/2019 16:06

Ada

I think Ayda is a phonetic spelling of Ida

Addsverisimilitude · 01/12/2019 15:50

Ada

Nonnymum · 01/12/2019 11:36

I would spell it Ada

CharitySchmarity · 01/12/2019 11:35

My grandmother and great-grandmother were both called Ada so I've always known how to pronounce it. I'd stick with Ada - most people have heard of it (due to Ada Lovelace) and if they do pronounce it wrong, you only have to tell them the right way. For what it's worth, I rather like it.

20viona · 30/11/2019 18:14

Ayda

confusedyoungthing · 30/11/2019 18:10

I'd pronounce them the same. Rhyming with Ava.

Ada is definitely the better spelling. Ayda feels a bit unnecessary.

PurpleFrames · 28/11/2019 16:57

I personally find Adya more modern

Ingridla · 28/11/2019 16:48

Ada. It was my grandmothers name!

Whattodoabout · 28/11/2019 16:45

Ada and it’s pronounced ade-ah.

Omashu · 25/11/2019 18:44

It’s really growing in popularity. I’m not fond of it but clearly many others are! Ada is the nicer spelling.

missmouse101 · 25/11/2019 18:42

Yikes, I really dislike it. Really grannyish like Gladys and Ethel.

bridgetreilly · 25/11/2019 18:36

Ada.

It is old-fashioned but in that sort of way which is popular at the moment.

MrsNoMopp · 25/11/2019 18:33

I met an Ada who must have been about 30. It really suited her.

AdaColeman · 25/11/2019 17:01

Ada is a fab name!

TiceCream · 25/11/2019 17:01

I’d say Ayda as Eye-da. If you want the Ada pronunciation then I’d spell it that way.

TheJoxter · 25/11/2019 16:58

Definitely Ada, I’d expect Ayda to be pronounced like Ida which is a different name in itself

DramaAlpaca · 25/11/2019 16:54

I'd go for Ada. Keep it really simple and nobody can mess around with the spelling and pronunciation. It's a nice name, one of the few 'granny chic' ones I like.

Ohyesiam · 25/11/2019 15:56

Ada.
Ayda looks like eyeda to me ( like a pirate would say ay ay captain)

QueenWhatevs · 25/11/2019 15:55

I know an Ada and an Ayda under 4, so even if its a little old fashioned its definitely having a moment :)

nicannie · 25/11/2019 15:53

@suckingdieselfella thank you, totally agree lol. I think I'll keep this on the short list and pick another one or two that we like and then when she is finally here we can decide x

Nothing wrong with old-fashioned. Much better than a celeb name.

nicannie · 25/11/2019 15:33

@flymetothestars for Ada or Ayda?? I'm thinking Ada is the winner ??

Does anyone think it might be quite old fashioned? There's been a few rumbles of that when I've mentioned the name at my work etc
