Well it seems Elsie is a very marmite name! People either love it or hate it.
Also considering Violet.
Just wondering what your opinions are on Violet?
Would it sound nice with Noah?

It’s actually been on the rise for a long time. It’s just suddenly got super popular.

It was always one of my favourite names but when I came to name my DD over 10 years ago, it was already too popular then.

FizzyGreenWater · 23/11/2019 10:33

Totally faddy - it's just been completely revived over the last couple of years with everyone seemingly 'discovering' it at the same time.

You can kind of see why, it's a progression from the Lily/Rose flower name craze as people cast about for that kind of name but more unusual. But, it's not actually that nice. Vi is appalling and conjures up an image of a crusty gran with hair yellowed by fag smoke. It's actually not that easy to say either, and is close to 'violent'.

So no, not for me and I think it will fall straight back out of favour in the next few years, as soon as it doesn't sound 'unique' any more.

VenusClapTrap · 23/11/2019 09:33

I love Violet. Would have been my choice if it didn’t sound comedic with our surname. Viola is also lovely.

Time40 · 22/11/2019 21:17

It's OK, but there are an awful lot of little violets now.

How about Vivien instead? (My middle name - not that I'm biased or anything ... )

MidnightMystery · 22/11/2019 21:01

I think Violet is a beautiful name.

Amyaaa · 22/11/2019 20:48

When I was pregnant, I wanted violet for a girl. I love the name.
(fell in love with it through the film coyote ugly, the main girl in that film was called violet).... 🤣
We had a boy though and named him Isaac, and now I'm not sure on violet, think ill go with it for a middle name if we have a girl next!

GetOffTheTableMabel · 22/11/2019 20:39

Violet is lovely. Just lovely.

Ruby666 · 22/11/2019 20:36

I love Violet, it was my nans middle name and would use it if I had a girl.

bridgetreilly · 22/11/2019 20:34

I prefer Elsie.

DaisyTulip · 22/11/2019 20:29

Not what you've asked, but I'd go with Elise instead of Elsie.

Prettier than Elsie.

I do like Violet though and would not be put off by popularity.

Elsie though, its a drippy and limp name. (sorry).

jackstini · 22/11/2019 20:20

Love Violet (& would pronounce it vi o let) and it goes really well with Noah

Thefaceofboe · 22/11/2019 20:17

I adore the name Violet but my DP hates it so it couldn’t ever be an option for us. I also love Viola

daisypond · 22/11/2019 15:42

I’m not keen but it’s a lot better than Elsie.

userabcname · 22/11/2019 14:54

I prefer Violet to Elsie.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 22/11/2019 14:19

I love Elsie and despite its popularity, don't know any. Violet just reminds me of Violet Elizabeth Bott; not keen, sorry.

TatianaLarina · 22/11/2019 12:13

Of course.

Never heard violent pronounced vilent.

Grufallosfriends · 22/11/2019 12:06

Yes, I say Vye oh lin for Violin

But I say Vile ent for Violent so I assumed Violet was pronounced Vile et.

Do people really say Vye oh lent and Vye oh let?

TatianaLarina · 21/11/2019 19:38

Violet is a million miles better than Elsie. Like the nn Lettie.

I don't like the sound (Vile ett)

Vi uh let as in violin. People don’t say vile in.

Grufallosfriends · 21/11/2019 13:52

I prefer Violet to Elsie as it's less cutesy and twee.

However, the 'Vile' sound (or do people say Vi O let?) and the similarity to Violent would put me off using it.

CravingCheese · 21/11/2019 12:47

It feels like one of these rather adorable Victorian maid names to me... (But I'm not British so I may be mistaken. Just a personal association, I suppose.)

It's a sweet name imo. I like it.

Whattodoabout · 21/11/2019 10:06

I love it but it does seem quite popular at the minute.

Peachbubble · 21/11/2019 07:33

I prefer Violet much more than Elsie.

MurrayTheMonk · 21/11/2019 06:34

Love it. Wanted it for dd2 and was vetoed.
I also like Elsie.
Pick whichever you like better-no name is universally liked anywhere.

Thetimetravelerswife · 21/11/2019 05:59

I like violet! Much prefer it to Elsie!

HUZZAH212 · 21/11/2019 04:25

Violet is lovely but it's had a big revival in the same way as Grace and Rose did (if that bothers you). Elsie is lovely but also pretty popular. If you like the older style names I like; Mary, Hazel, Edith, June, Mabel, Clara (although also becoming very popular).
