Does this hit you as a botanical name?

I love botanical names, but unfortunately DC2 will have the surname Gardner, which pretty much rules that out.

Could I get away with Betony as a name? It is a herb, but not too commonly known I think. Would you have seen its botanical connotation before I pointed it out here?

Erica is perfect! Not botanical at all to some, and if you do know erica/ericaceous etc as relating to heathers it doesn't detract from it as a lovely name. (MUCH nicer than Betony too)

I would have suggested Veronica, just because it would usually be called speedwell here. A similarly stealth approach!

We went with a very stealth botanical name in the end - Erica, which is Latin for heather. It esoteric enough that not many people are likely to spot it, and subtle enough that it won't matter if they do.

I knew it was a botanical name. I agree that betony is too close to bethany.
Sorrel was the name that first popped into my head. Or you could have viola, tilia or tansy.

Have you got a British plant book to flick through? I bet there are loads of the non standard botanical names to choose from.

Betony would probably be confused for Bethany a lot. Plus for nn's it only lends to Bet or Tony. Something like Marguerite extends to; Marg, Meg, Betty, Betsy, Peggy.

A botanical name actually does work with Gardener imo. Yes, there is a bit of a theme but it is a rather lovely theme, isn't it?

And I agree with PPs, Rose, Marguerite and Flora would be really nice.

Beton” in several languages (Polish, French to name a couple) means “concrete”.

German speaker here. Yep, I also thought 'concrete-y'...

I was thinking of Hebe too.
Having known a Rose Plant I think Rose Gardener is fine and many botanical names are better than Betany.

Bláthnaid is the Irish for flower.
Bláthín is little flower.
Nóinín is the Irish for Daisy.
Have you any Irish connections ?
