Plum’s sister!

Help please! We chose a very unusual name for our first daughter (Plum Elizabeth) and now we’re stuck on what to name her sister. Our current list feels a bit pedestrian in comparison, does it matter?

We like:

Alice
Flora
Gaia
Cecily
Beatrix
Sylvie
Merryn
Iris (actually, I’ve always loved Isis, but it’s obviously unusable now)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

How about Damson?

My mum wanted to call me Victoria, but my dad refused on the grounds I would get called plum as a nickname 😂

Leopardprintboots · 18/11/2019 10:12

@Jj2431 I actually know two other little girls called Plum! It’s not that much of a shock these days to hear names like this. 30 years ago they’d have stood out. There’s a Wolf and a Fox at our baby group. No boys called Oliver funnily enough

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/11/2019 10:08

Myrtle

Jj2431 · 18/11/2019 09:40

Jeez louise Plum though..plum is an insult around here. I hope you live in a very posh area where everyone is called Apple, peaches, Horatio etc otherwise she is going to be verbally ripped apart at school and in her future and I definitely would tell you what I thought of plum if I knew you in real life. So cruel to the kid but anyway, on one hand, how do you now call the next one a normal name but equally, don't be mean to your next kid as well and please do choose something like Alice. I hope you consider changing plum to Elizabeth and use plum as a middle name if you really insist on it.

TatianaLarina · 18/11/2019 09:37

The opinions you’ve projected here...?!

What about them. I have no issue with unusual, unconventional, foreign choices.

IckleBear · 18/11/2019 09:33

Plum and Wren
Plum and Daisy
Plum and Noemi
Plum and Mavis

Painsnail · 18/11/2019 08:50

Plum is one of my guilty pleasure names. Love to be brave enough to use it! I think another unusual nature name would be a good choice. I don't love sorrel, it sounds too much like sorrow to my ear. How about

Hebe (another one I'd love to use)
Laurel
Zinnia
Tansy
Aster

daisypond · 18/11/2019 07:39

How about Cicely?
It’s a plant, but not too obvious, has a Victorian vibe, and v similar to Cecily.
I like all your suggested names. I like Plum as well.

Theworldisfullofgs · 18/11/2019 07:38

Lettice like Lettice Knollys. She was a lady in waiting to Elizabeth I.

KronksSpinachPuffs · 18/11/2019 07:38

This is slightly out there but how about Lark?

It is the name of the baby on the TV programme "Life in Pieces" and when I first heard it I thought it was quite strange but as I watched more I thought it was really pretty!

Could go quite well with your other daughters name :)

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 18/11/2019 07:35

@PollyShelby, it's Soreen malt loaf that you're thinking of.

Milo90 · 18/11/2019 07:24

Without sounding like I'm taking the pee... I'd go with Peach. Its very pretty and goes with Plum!!

PollyShelby · 18/11/2019 04:10

Sorrel reminds me of a dense loaf.

Is there a malt loaf thingy in a yellow packet? I can remember seeing it somewhere.

stairway · 18/11/2019 03:45

Orange, you glad you weren’t called plum.

FridalovesDiego · 18/11/2019 03:43

I think it would sound way cooler to give your second a more classic name to complement the slightly more unusual Plum. If you try to give another name similar it will just sound too try hard. I second Hester. Although from your list Beatrix is cool. And has brilliant diminutives (Beattie, Bea, Trixie)

BonBon411 · 18/11/2019 03:29

@TatianaLarina...you’re hilarious!!! The opinions you’ve projected here...?! Good gaff!! 😂😂😂

Spartak · 18/11/2019 02:10

Plum is slang for testicle around here.

HUZZAH212 · 18/11/2019 01:52

Can I just add that whilst it's a bit unfair all the ribbing you've had on here OP... Can you please update when you make your final choice. We need to know! 😁

NettyGubbins · 18/11/2019 01:46

Did you really call your daughter Plum? Grin.
Mbrave. Hopefully she will frequent Sloane Square and not the East End, where it’s not a nice name.

In the spirit of your taste, though..,

Prudence (Pru)
Connie : Constance
Genie / Genevieve
Jo / Josephine
Bette / Elizabeth

HUZZAH212 · 18/11/2019 01:33

You could just stick with a pet name/nickname vibe. Such as; Winnie, Hattie, Minnie, Clemmie, Letty, Lottie, Mena, Gigi.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 18/11/2019 01:28

There's a scene in the comedy series Benidorm where one of the characters is bemoaning how shit life is. He says even his name shows how unlucky he is - he is called Winter, and would have been called Summer if he had been a girl. But his brothers are Barry and Eric, and so have normal names and normal lives.

Anyway the point I'm making is that you need to think about this when naming your baby - Plum may love her unusual name when older, and Alice may be jealous that she has a more run of the mill name. Conversely, Plum may wish she was more of an Alice. The names don't have to match but should be equally unusual (with a classic middle name).

RowenaMud · 18/11/2019 01:04

I always thought Plum was a nickname (or perhaps more accurately a pet name) for Victoria?

I love Sorrel but the footwear brand association would put me off using it tbh.

From your list my favourite is Alice but I think it could potentially be shortened to Ali which is a ten a penny name and it would be in such a completely different vibe to Plum, it almost wouldn’t be fair to either girl.

Therefore Gaia would be my choice.

Notsurehowtofixit · 18/11/2019 00:53

Clementine
Huckleberry
Satsuma
Damson
Poppy

MrsEricBana · 18/11/2019 00:38

Given that your dd is already called Plum then I'd go with Alice or Flora if it were me.
