Plum’s sister!

HazeyJaney · 17/11/2019 19:23

Help please! We chose a very unusual name for our first daughter (Plum Elizabeth) and now we’re stuck on what to name her sister. Our current list feels a bit pedestrian in comparison, does it matter?

We like:

Alice
Flora
Gaia
Cecily
Beatrix
Sylvie
Merryn
Iris (actually, I’ve always loved Isis, but it’s obviously unusable now)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Agree completely, Tatiana. The name that is being “othered” is Plum.

TatianaLarina · 20/11/2019 10:46

Saying 'Plum' doesn't stand out 'in multicultural areas' is basically saying, 'there's load of [weird / strange / unusual / offbeat] names where I live, so Plum doesn't sound unusual'.

Never said anything of the sort. ‘Weird, strange, offbeat’ are all your words and your interpretation. You betray the fact that that is essentially your problem with the name Plum.

The objection from posters on the thread is that Plum is ‘unusual’. Unusual in what sense? If you simply mean it’s not a conventional British name. So what?

In multicultural areas like London there are so many names that are not conventional British names that in that context Plum does not stand out.

Names from other nationalities are being deemed 'unusual'. They're being 'othered'. That's not OK.

No they haven’t been deemed ‘unusual’. Again that is your invention.
You and other posters have been ‘othering‘ Plum and bullying the OP on that basis. It’s simply intolerance. Plum is too ‘unusual’ or ‘odd’ for your taste and you’re trying cover up your insularity and conservatism by crying racism.

Nice try but it won’t wash.

MerryMarigold · 20/11/2019 08:31

I know a Marmalade who has a brother Hector, so an unusual but regular babe with something more 'out there'. Parents are lovely people. I was delighted when I heard her name, not heard of anyone called Marmalade since Marmalade Atkins!

Ritascornershop · 20/11/2019 05:55

Petula
Inez
Oonagh
Odile

mathanxiety · 20/11/2019 05:37

I think you need a name that packs a wallop. I really like Beatrix and Sylvie from your list. Beatrix because it is quite dashing, imo, and Sylvie because it's a lovely name and also an oblique reference to nature so tying with Plum.

Plum and Daphne
Plum and Pernilla
Plum and Rowena
Plum and Xanthe
Plum and Vita
Plum and Isabeau
Plum and Mignon
Plum and Romy
Plum and Tamara

EmmaGrundyForPM · 20/11/2019 04:10

I think Sorrel would go reall well with Plum.

I know a Sorrel who has sisters called Gal and Honey. Would you consider Gala? Unusual but funky and again works with Plum.

Butterflycookie · 20/11/2019 04:07

Nectarine Blush

Igotthemheavyboobs · 20/11/2019 03:36

Hi OP, what about Prudence? I think it is such a beautiful name and goes nicely with Plum.

LimeRedBanana · 19/11/2019 23:41

Tatiana’s post is not racist. I live in a multicultural area and there are all sorts of names.

OK, I said I didn't want to elaborate, but I will, to explain why I find this ^^ sort of comment somewhat uncomfortable.

Most people live in multi-cultural areas these days - to a greater or lesser degree. It's rare that you'll find many communities that are completely homogeneous.

Saying 'Plum' doesn't stand out 'in multicultural areas' is basically saying, 'there's load of [weird / strange / unusual / offbeat] names where I live, so Plum doesn't sound unusual'.

Names from other nationalities are being deemed 'unusual'. They're being 'othered'. That's not OK.

Rashida? Mei Chen? Kyung-Wa? They're just names in places like India, China, etc.

Plum isn't 'just a name', otherwise why not lump it in with Olivia, Charlotte, Evie and Violet?

RoseMartha · 19/11/2019 21:29

Heather
Esther
Lola
Saskia

LittleDoveLove · 19/11/2019 21:20

All of your names are nice I think. I would go with what you like rather than what 'goes' . They are individuals so don't need to sound like they go together x

Moominfan · 19/11/2019 20:12

Orange, you glad you weren’t called plum.

GrinGrinGrin

I spat my tea out lol this comment

MissHenty · 19/11/2019 16:46

Yes I’d love to know what you name her too @HazeyJaney

There’s some right pieces of work on this thread 🤣 hope it hasn’t got to you! You’ve handled it all really well, I’d have got into pointless arguments. I bet you’re a great mum with patience like that ❤️

ladycarlotta · 19/11/2019 16:31

Oh, OP, I'd love to know what you name her in the end. Sorrel is beautiful, btw, but so are your other choices. And Plum is cute. I'm so sorry you've had such a going over here, some people can be real shits.

MissHenty · 19/11/2019 15:53

@HazeyJaney I believe you it’s not a big deal in real life as I actually know a little girl called Plum! I admit I did have a little giggle at first but I’m totally used to the name now and think it’s cool ! Great choice!

I vote alice for DD2

floraloctopus · 19/11/2019 15:08

Love the name Plum but please don't use Peach or Pear.

How about Sorrel?

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 19/11/2019 15:03

What about another pink/purple/red name...

Beetroot?

I love Plum! Quirky and fun but easy to spell, unusual and yet clearly feminine. It is a tough one to follow!
Either follow the quirky or go very straight. Your choices are the quirky side of middle so do appear pedestrian in comparison.
Example quirky:
Russet, Bunny, Lupin,
Example straight:
Ann, Joan, Rachel, Ruth.

Cbeebiesrehab · 19/11/2019 14:58

I don’t understand why this post has turned into people slagging off OPs existing daughter’s name. On so many posts I see people claiming it’s bad taste to do just that, seems to have been forgotten here though?
I would go for a more subtle nature/botanical name:
Rose
Wren
Daisy
Iris
Or maybe something like Posy, Lark, Eira

HazeyJaney · 19/11/2019 14:58

I appreciate all the comments and suggestions, some really nice ideas and many we hadn’t considered before, so thank you for those.

I’m going to step away from this now since it’s become a debate on Plum, which wasn’t the point and is pretty irrelevant since she’s already named. I’m not naive enough to think that everybody loves it, but I promise that it’s not proven to be a big deal in real life. I get more questions about my (normal, but unusually spelt) name than about Plum.

OP posts:
TatianaLarina · 19/11/2019 14:45

It’s like being called Olive not James.

Olive means... olive.

notnowmaybelater · 19/11/2019 14:38
  • disclaimer I googled the information above so it may be incorrect, like 99% of random internet forum posts...
notnowmaybelater · 19/11/2019 14:36

Being called 布冧 and knowing that it means plum and is an established personal name in your heritage language isn't really the same as being called the English word Plum...

Supposedly James means "supplanter", but bring called James isn't analogous to having Supplanter as your birth certificate name...

finallychangedmyusername · 19/11/2019 13:42

I'd expect a Plum to have a sister called:

Kitty
Lavender
Cleo
Lettie
Marnie
Flora

I'd then pair it with a traditional middle:
Kitty Charlotte
Lavender Mary
Cleo Eleanor
Lettie Alexandra
Marnie Olivia
Flora Harriet
