If you could choose your surname...

...what would it be?

A bit random I know but sometimes I hear a surname and think 'ooh, that's a good one'!

Mine is pretty comical but definitely could be worse... though if I could choose, I'd go for Cathcart or Brocklebank! Smile

What would you pick?

I've had two surnames that are hard to spell and pronounce so I'd go for something simple, but possibly with a nice meaning connected with nature. Wood, Lake, Stone, something like that.

Bananablueberry · 15/11/2019 21:07

I had a friend in primary school with with surname Swan and I always thought it was lovely

LostInTheColonies · 15/11/2019 20:57

Our local graveyard includes the grave of one Honour Christmas. Wouldn't want the name, but it is rather fabulous!

saveallyourkisses · 15/11/2019 20:54

I really like my surname now, and quite liked my maiden name. My married surname is of french origin and sounds lovely with lots of names so I feel very lucky.
I did hear about a boy with the surname Tinkerlily when I was at school, and thought that was lovely 😊

Teenangels · 15/11/2019 20:48

I have no idea what name I would choose or want, although I think it would be a simple because my bloody last name is so stupidly spelt that I say my last name and spell it straight away, it has 2 silent letters in it!

I also someone called Fox and it makes me chuckle

IDontWantToCookTonight · 15/11/2019 20:46

are you stuck in the 1950’s, dear?

No, dear. I just don’t give a flying pigs shite about the whole ‘why can’t women propose’ shite. Not even on a leap year. I’m not going to fall in the lap of everyone else’s ‘it’s 2019, equality, non binary, pansexual’ and whatever other utter rubbish that is today’s ‘normal’.

I want a proposal, the ring, the white dress and the piece of paper to make it legal.

Why is it so frowned upon to want a proposal from a man now?ConfusedHmm

managedmis · 15/11/2019 20:42

Tattersall
Fitzpatrick

CampfireZen · 15/11/2019 20:41

Was struck by surname of a broadcast journalist the other day: Marinangeli.
(even lovelier when pronounced in his strong Italian accent!).

Makes me think of the sea and angels.

FrancesFlute · 15/11/2019 20:40

Mrs Rose

keepingbees · 15/11/2019 20:38

I quite fancy Valentine. Sounds pretty and romantic.
Or something fancy like De Witt Bukater off Titanic Grin

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 15/11/2019 20:38

I don’t mind my name- either my maiden name that I use for work or my married one- but I’ve always fancied one of those literal ones like Drinkwater or Inkpen.

TiceCream · 15/11/2019 20:37

I worked with someone who had the surname Devine. Always thought it sounded lovely!

motortroll · 15/11/2019 20:31

I can think of loads I WOULDNT have! My uni housemates surname was O'Cock!!

I think I'd like something faintly ridiculous but not mortifying.....I like Higginbottom which was a neighbours surname when I was young!

mistermagpie · 15/11/2019 20:27

I would like Fox to be my surname! I went to school with a boy who's surname was Aqualina and I always liked that too.

AnotherDFSsale · 15/11/2019 20:21

I would love the surname King! Feels very superiorGrin

Shalom23 · 15/11/2019 20:18

Bronte.

northernknickers · 15/11/2019 20:14

I had a teacher called Miss Flowerdown. She was really pretty and kind...her name suited her. She got married and became Mrs Pickle...which made us all laugh. Both great names for different reasons.

I used to work with a teacher called Miss Biggadyke (not even joking!!). Bloody brilliant name...luckily it was a primary school though, as you can imagine the hilarity that would ensue after every utterance of 'yes Miss Biggadyke' in high school 😳

Thanksgiving2019 · 15/11/2019 20:12

I share my unusual name with a famous internationally known sportsman and we are distant relatives (second cousins). I am always being asked «ohhh are you related to xx?» And then I get bombarded with questions when I just want to pay for my pint of milk.
Smile

So sometimes I think how nice it would be to be a Smith and not have to field questions.

NeedAnExpert · 15/11/2019 20:11

I’d choose my DP’s, after 6 years and counting. He still won’t fucking propose to me.

Are you stuck in the 1950s, dear?

IDontWantToCookTonight · 15/11/2019 20:04

I’d choose my DP’s, after 6 years and counting. He still won’t fucking propose to me.

Jokes about proposing, jokes about buying a ring. Says he will propose and wants to spend the rest of his life with me.

Hasn’t followed through.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 15/11/2019 20:02

Tremaine

Collision · 15/11/2019 20:01

My husband aunt was called Claudia Ferrari and I think I could rock that.

Also, Hamilton and Shaw are both nice surnames.

Thetimetravelerswife · 15/11/2019 20:01

“Rose”

Because it makes everything sound pretty...

But otherwise a name of a famous brand or something so people think my family invented it... like
Bentley,
Ferrari,
Cadbury

But maybe not if it’s something like primark, Greggs haha

PrincessLouis · 15/11/2019 19:56

Great q - I like history so would go for a sort of Medieval Lord surname like Norfolk or Nottingham, or a Norman Conquest one like Devereux

beanaseireann · 15/11/2019 19:33

I like Cadogan.

Has anyone ever heard of the surname Duft ?

@bridgetreilly - is your maternal grandmother's maiden name an Irish surname ?
