I'm having a baby boy and I love the name Sonny! The only thing that puts me off is that kids can be cruel and they will take the mick and refer to his name as in 'sunny day' etc. I'm probs just being over para but I don't want him to be made to hate his name. Does anyone on here have a little boy called sonny? And if so have they came across this or am I just putting himself off a lovely name just because

I know two Sonnys, no issues. People on MN have this view that children with non-traditional names get mercilessly bullied in school. However there are so many names out there now that children don’t bat and eyelid at the more unusual, and if they are going to pick on someone for their name it’s as likely to be an Ellie or William as it is a Sonny or Ocean or whatever.

There was a very recent thread on this name which you might like to search for, which had very mixed reactions.

Kids will accept the name, but older people are likely to be more judgy about it - me included I'm afraid as it's not my style at all.

It was almost DS1's name. It was his nickname in hospital and all the nurses called him that for the first week of his life They thought it was his real name and he suited it so much we almost changed our minds about his chosen name. I love it.

Love Sonny, it was on my shortlist for DS2, but in the end we went with something which is very similar due to a family connection
I wouldn't worry too much about the teasing, virtually any name can throw up a teasing scenario if the intention is there, including mine, DS1 and DS2.. I would go for it if you love it!

There’s a Sonny in my DD’s class (they’re 5/6)

I’ve never heard any child make fun of it, and I can’t imagine them doing so. There are some very “out there” names in my DS class (9/10) but no ones ever been made fun of for their name AFAIA.
Some of the names make me Hmm but the kids all seem to accept them.

I think it’s a nice name. If you like it, use it
