I'm having a baby boy and I love the name Sonny! The only thing that puts me off is that kids can be cruel and they will take the mick and refer to his name as in 'sunny day' etc. I'm probs just being over para but I don't want him to be made to hate his name. Does anyone on here have a little boy called sonny? And if so have they came across this or am I just putting himself off a lovely name just because

Love sonny and considered it for my boy, but it would have been a nickname for another name ending in son as I didn’t think it sounded formal enough? I had Harrison, jenson, Bryson, Lawson on my list, all to be shorted to sonny 😌

Jellykat · 13/11/2019 19:47

Ridiculous not to call a child a name you love because it wouldn't sound right during graduation stucknoue.
Both my DSs have unusual names, and no-one gasped during their graduations! They both have really good jobs too, one is a member of staff at a large college, the other Technical lead developer at a large company. Maybe rather then being a negative on a CV, it might help to have a name with a bit of character..

AliceAforethought · 13/11/2019 19:32

It’s a nickname, not a proper name for a grown man.

pontiouspilates · 13/11/2019 19:01

Done to death round here.

MissHenty · 13/11/2019 19:00

Ha! Sonny would sound absolutely fine at a graduation @kb16

I think 20-30 years ago it might have stood out and sounded a bit odd. It won’t now. Children called Fox, Woody, Rudy and Wolf at my child’s school. No one mentions the names being unusual.

Carpathian2 · 13/11/2019 08:00

I have a grandson called Sonny and he's never had a negative response to it, either at school or anywhere else.

billandbenflowerpotmen1 · 13/11/2019 07:57

I know a 4 year old Sunny who is the sunniest natured child I've ever known

stucknoue · 13/11/2019 07:54

Ps I sat through graduation and the names read were very traditional, quite different to my other daughters class at school ... just ensure you are not pigeonholing your child before they are even born due to their name

stucknoue · 13/11/2019 07:52

When you choose a name imagine your son applying for a good job - does it look appropriate on a cv? Does it sound right read out at his university graduation. Remember you can use a name as a nickname at home. Sonny is like calling a kid junior, usually they have their dads name

MissHenty · 13/11/2019 07:50

Sonny sounds manly and strong to me

Many of the names nowadays for boys are quite “cute” sounding like Alfie and Albie. Sonny doesn’t fit into that “cute” category for me. I think it’s a great name for a boy to grow into a man

MissHenty · 13/11/2019 07:49

I love it @kb16 ❤️ Sonny ❤️
One of my fav names - def use it
The kind of names around nowadays I really don’t think “Sonny” would get picked on whatsoever

daisypond · 13/11/2019 05:41

I think it’s rather demeaning, sorry. Best not to think you are having “a baby boy”. You’re picking a name for a man.

EleanorShellstrop100 · 13/11/2019 04:56

Sonny is a great name and who cares if kids mention a sunny day - that not even negative!

Marcipex · 13/11/2019 00:08

I suppose I would feel silly saying it to someone who is not my son.
And when they are adults, younger people saying Sonny to someone much older than themselves.

AdaColeman · 12/11/2019 23:10

There was a long thread on this name only a couple of weeks ago, started by iloveyoubutilovememore, well worth you searching for it kb16.

Luckingfovely · 12/11/2019 22:52

I am so for people choosing unusual names (my dc are out there) but I really can't get on board with this. It makes me think - I've woken up in America in the 50s! BUT if you love it, stick to your guns, and grow some thick skin for the few stupid comments.

Sexnotgender · 12/11/2019 22:43

I don’t hate it.

Makes me think immediately of Sonny Bill Williams which isn’t the worst!

IfWishesWereFishes · 12/11/2019 22:43

The weather thing is just a Scottish way of saying you're cheeky or something similar. Like, settle doon, Sonny Jim Grin

Omashu · 12/11/2019 22:42

There’s nothing negative about being called Sunny day!

mamasiz · 12/11/2019 22:05

I have a beautiful little Sonny, which is a diminutive of his longer first name. He can choose to be known as Sonny forever or by his longer name when he is older.

user1493494961 · 12/11/2019 21:57

Seems more of a nickname.

Mammatino · 12/11/2019 21:52

It's the adults not the kids who call him sunny BTW. He has never been bullied in school by other kids that I know of.

Marcipex · 12/11/2019 21:51

I can only hear it said in a menacing East End accent, though I don’t really know why.

Mammatino · 12/11/2019 21:51

I've got a Sonny, his father is Sicillian, we use it as a diminutive for his real name which is santino. I get a few people who think I've called him sunny though, I'm not sure who calls their kids after weather.

IfWishesWereFishes · 12/11/2019 21:45

I know a few baby Sonny's.

I really dislike it, it feels to me like naming a kid Junior or something. But there are worse names, if you like it use it.

One thing; if you're in Scotland he will 100% end up being called Sonny Jim Grin
