Nicknames for Serena?

We've found out we're having a girl early next year and I've always loved the name Serena - it's a very empowered but traditional name.

Only problem is that I can't think of any way to shorten it...

Would love to know if anyone knows any Serenas and what they go by!

Lovely name.

My diminutive would be Seesee

Clangus00 · 13/11/2019 12:24

Why do you need to shorten it?

CheerfulBunny · 13/11/2019 12:18

It always makes me think of gorgeous Blake Lively as Serena Van der Woodsen in Gossip Girl (v old reference). She and Blair would refer to each other as 'S' and 'B' (Ess and Bee). It's a really beautiful name - timeless.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 13/11/2019 12:11

I honestly wouldn't expect Serena to be shortened. It's a beautiful and very easy to say name!

I know one teenage Serena and she has always been Serena.

FizzyGreenWater · 13/11/2019 11:50

Yes Serena is a really tricky one for NN. I really dislike Rena and Ser. Not at all the same feel. And people DO shorten names! - that's why OP is asking. You can't control it and it amost always happens, so yes if I were thinking through a name, what other people are likely to end up calling her whether I like it or not would be a huge consideration.

I have to say the nn thing would put me off Serena a bit - but that's possibly because I don't love Serena, although it's nice.

Serena is lovely, Rena is awful, I wouldn't intentionally shorten it, a 'pet' name or nickname may evolve naturally.

Yeahnahyeah1 · 13/11/2019 07:27

Why would you shorten it? It’s not an easily shorten-able name to be honest, I’ve never heard it shortened.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 13/11/2019 07:24

Ren , Rennie, Reenie all sound like an indigestion medicine. Awful.

Serena is lovely.

milkysmum · 13/11/2019 07:09

I would imagine people might shorten to 'Ren'

Omashu · 13/11/2019 07:05

I’m guessing the OP just wants to know what others may shorten it too 🤷🏼‍♀️

MrsNoMopp · 13/11/2019 05:15

Serena is lovely. Not keen on the nicknames though, they remind me of Rennies and Senna. I'd go with an unrelated nickname or just use the full name.

notangelinajolie · 13/11/2019 02:36

Where I'm from it would be Sair (as in hair)

Topseyt · 13/11/2019 02:31

Serena is lovely without shortening it. If you really want to shorten it then maybe Rena, or Renie. But it is great on its own.

Bluerussian · 13/11/2019 01:42

Serena is a lovely name, really beautiful. Sere and Rena are nice nicknames but it is up to her what she wants to be called as she gets older, school friends will abbreviate.

PurpleDaisies · 13/11/2019 01:30

Nicknames are organic. You can’t always predict what’s going up stick. I don’t think you need to worry.

UndomesticHousewife · 13/11/2019 01:29

Serena is lovely. As for nicknames maybe Reenie there aren't really nicknames for serena that jump out.
Anyway surely nicknames come about more naturally in that you call your child something and it sort of sticks. I've not really heard of choosing the nickname when choosing the actual name (except on Mumsnet)

You might choose Reenie as the nickname but end up calling her Nina as it's something that has stuck and suits her.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 13/11/2019 01:14

I've never understood the whole nicknames thing. If you like a name, use it. Serena is a lovely name, why would you want to shorten it? And if you do want to call.her Rena then name her that.

Both our ds have names that can't be shortened (think Sam and Tom type of nanes). Ds1 has a nickname given to him.by his friends that is much longer than his actual name but bears no relation to it whatsoever.

BlouseAndSkirt · 13/11/2019 01:13

I wouldn’t shorten it.

Heartofglass12345 · 13/11/2019 01:08

I don't get why you'd want to shorten it or call her something else? Why name her serena because you like it, only to call her something else Confused

Tillygetsit · 13/11/2019 01:03

One in dd1's class whose mum calls her Serry.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 12/11/2019 21:25

Honestly? Reeree? Reenie? Siree?

Just stick with Serena!

Pippilangstrumpfi · 12/11/2019 21:23

Why would you choose a lovely name like Serena and then not call her it? Hmm

It's so easy to say! Serena!

schafernaker · 12/11/2019 20:24

Williams 😊

PotteringAlong · 12/11/2019 19:28

And, to answer your last question, I know 1 Serena. She goes by the name Serena.

PotteringAlong · 12/11/2019 19:27

Why do you need to shorten it? If you want to call your daughter just call her Serena, surely?
