How popular is Martha?

Just wondering how common it is currently and general opinions of it as a name please.
Also what, if anything have you heard it shortened to?
If we like Martha what other names might we like? TIA

I know of two but quite tenuously (friend of a friend’s baby etc). It’s a lovely name.

I think of Mabel as in a similar vein.

Lovely name.

Essexgirlupnorth · 31/10/2019 22:20

There were two in my NCT group of 8 now six years old. More popular in some areas than others

DramaAlpaca · 31/10/2019 22:18

I'm in the minority here, I find Martha really dreary & dowdy.

It's along the same lines as Ellen, Nancy & Edith to me. On the plus side, at least it's not cutesy.

I only know one, she's in her 20s.

HippyChickMama · 31/10/2019 22:17

I only know one Martha, she's 7. I liked it for dd but it doesn't go well with our surname.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 31/10/2019 22:14

It’s dd’s middle name, so I love it.

Interesting how many pp saying their husband’s hated it- same situation here but DH didn’t have a leg to stand on after watching me give birth so I got my way 😂

PJ67 · 31/10/2019 22:14

I really like it and don't know any Martha's

Fluandseptember · 31/10/2019 22:12

I know LOTS! Nice name tho

Candlecandle · 31/10/2019 22:10

Thanks so much for all the replies! For some reason I couldn't find the ONS list so that's really helpful too, thank you. Great to hear it's generally liked, definitely on our shortlist now, thank you all 😍

Fluffiest · 31/10/2019 20:04

Beautiful name and I don't know any Martha's at all.

Dartsplayer · 31/10/2019 20:03

I love the name Martha and wanted it for one of my daughters but my husband hated it

fernandoanddenise · 31/10/2019 20:01

Love it!

AnnaNimmity · 31/10/2019 19:59

I think it's a gorgeous name. I only know one - she's my dd's friend (aged 16).

greathat · 31/10/2019 19:58

To be fair she's prob in her 20s now...

greathat · 31/10/2019 19:57

One of the nicest kids I ever taught was a Martha, she had a twin sister called Ella

PeopleWhoRun · 31/10/2019 18:38

I know 4 Martha's under the age of 3. Lovely name

BelfastmummyL · 31/10/2019 18:36

My friends daughter is Martha. I love it think it is definately becoming more popular though.
If you're looking something less popular what about Mabel?

RolytheRhino · 31/10/2019 18:25

I know one who is about a year old now. She's got a twin called Emily.

lunasunshine · 31/10/2019 18:24

I only know one Martha (shes in her 30s). Absolutely love the name!

MissHenty · 31/10/2019 18:18

I don’t know any Marthas and I have 2 kids under 5 who go to nursery and playgroups

Smellybluecheese · 31/10/2019 17:59

I know 4. They are 13, 7, 4 and 6 months. It’s one of my favourites but BIL used it.

Raera · 31/10/2019 17:52

I know one, in her 20's and yes, she's very popular!

Africa2go · 31/10/2019 17:51

It was really popular when i had my first so 15 years ago, i loved it but didnt use it because 2 of my antenatal class were already planning to use it. I dont think it stayed popular, think there are only a handful at school.

I now work with a Martha, she's early 20s and she's known as Maz.
